YEAR-END MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR OF EDUCATION

With the rapid approach of the end of the 2005-2006 school year, I am taking this opportunity to thank each and every one of you for your efforts. Whether you work directly with children or in a support capacity, your commitment to serve the students of the Toronto Catholic District School Board is greatly appreciated.

Undoubtedly, the summer months will allow you to re-charge your batteries through recreational activities, whether at home, at the cottage or via travel. I fully recognize that many of you may be using a portion of the summer to take additional courses or to continue with professional training. I wish you success in these endeavours as well.

On a personal note, my first year as Director of Education has been very rewarding. I had the opportunity to visit more than 50 of our 201 schools. Some of these occasions coincided with an official school blessing, a ground-breaking ceremony, a special school anniversary, a school play, a track meet, a fund- raiser, a Minister’s announcement or other special event. Others were simply routine visits to meet students and staff to ensure that I don’t lose touch with the real purpose of our Catholic school system. In every instance, it was a pleasure to observe your talents, enthusiasm, and efforts in advancing the education of our students. It was also very reassuring to note the many charitable events held for the benefit of the less fortunate.

We have had both joyous celebrations and unfortunate tragedies occur during the school year. The prevalence of violence in the City of Toronto and the need for vigilance towards the safety of students and staff surfaced throughout the year. Our response to such events causes us to appreciate each other and the faith to survive difficult situations.

Once again, thank you for your support and encouragement during my first year as Director of Education of the Toronto Catholic District School Board. I look forward to continuing to serve you with optimism and faith as we continue to work together for Catholic Education.

I wish you and your families a safe, enjoyable and restful holiday.

Kevin Kobus

FROM THE BOARD A MONTHLY SUMMARY OF BOARD HIGHLIGHTS AND DECISIONS

June 2006 OSSLT Results show improvement The Toronto Catholic District School Board’s results in the March 2006 Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT) show that TCDSB students continue to improve in their overall literacy skills. A total of 81% of first-time eligible students were successful on the assessment. This represents an increase of 3% in achievement compared with the results in the previous year’s assessment, when 78% of students successfully completed the test.

The Board continues to provide students with a wide range of programs and services to support all students, with a particular emphasis on supporting students at risk, through its Success for All initiative. One of the most dramatic improvements is in the results shown by 14 schools supported by Ministry Learning Opportunities Grants, where most of the schools experienced improved results, some with as much as 17% increases.

As well, the results on the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Course confirm over 85% of our students are also meeting with success. The results are indicative of the additional resources and the many literacy initiatives that have been put in place to support student learning.

Individual school and school board results for the March 2006 OSSLT are posted on the EQAO website at www.eqao.com.

Donation to Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund The Board was pleased to present a cheque in the amount of $14,103.60 to the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund. The money was collected by TCDSB schools during toonie days held during African Heritage/Black History Month

Board endorses official logo The Board of Trustees has rescinded the November 2005 motion that had adopted ‘Faith in Your Child’ design with the TCDSB round maroon logo as the Board’s logo.

The Board’s official logo remains the round logo with the acceptable use of the horizontal logo design where appropriate.

The Board approved the use of the ‘Faith in Your Child’ design as a theme in conjunction with promotional and advertising materials where appropriate.

New Student Trustee for the Board The Board has ratified the selection of Ihor Korbabicz as the Student Trustee for 2006-2007. Mr. Korbabicz is a grade 11 student at St. Michael’s Choir School. He will take office on September 1st, and serve on the Board until August 31st, 2007.

Heat protocol to be developed The Board is looking at the development of a heat protocol for its 201 schools. The Board already has an approved protocol for severe weather conditions (see: http://www.tcdsb.org/trustees/Agendas/admin,%202004-06-07/2004- 06-07,%20Admin%20Agenda--Guidelines%20for%20Weather%20Conditions.pdf)

Preliminary report on 2006-2007 Grant for Student Needs The Board of Trustees received a report from staff on the preliminary status of the 2006-2007 budget. Based on the grant announcements, the preliminary projected shortfall in the Board’s 2006-2007 budget is $31.1 M. Staff is waiting for the spreadsheets from the Ministry of Education to accurately calculate grants by category. A further report with detailed calculations will be presented to the Board of Trustees

TCDSB to host 2007 OCSTA Conference The Board has established a committee to coordinate the 2007 OCSTA (Ontario Catholic School Trustees’ Association) Annual General Meeting. The organizing committee will comprise Trustees Paul Crawford, Ann Andrachuk, Oliver Carroll, John Del Grande, Angela Kennedy, Catherine LeBlanc-Miller, Sal Piccininni and Barbara Poplawski, as well as TCDSB staff.

Attendance Auto Dialing System The Board received a report of School Connects (Automated Attendance Dialing System) which was implemented in April 2003 to all secondary schools. The system informs parents of truancy by electronic e-mail or telephone of unexplained classroom absences and lateness at 10:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. each day. Since its inception School Connects has contributed significantly to reducing single period absences and lateness. Informing parents on a daily basis of missed classes has improved communication between home and school reducing the skipping problem affecting some students.

Summer Works Program improves schools The Board has approved $1,000,000 of work to improve the schools for September. The Summer Works Program will address such needs as asphalt repairs, partial painting, window cover replacements, carpet replacement and other similar work.

Trust fund to be offered to students in eight North York elementary schools Policy F.F.05 Mary Cicogna Trust Fund has been amended. A cash award of $100 will be provided to one student in each of the following schools: Blessed Margherita of Citta di Castello, Our Lady of the Assumption, St. Augustine, St. Charles Garnier, St. Conrad, St. , St. and St. Wilfrid.

Physical education not to be used as reward or punishment The Board has reaffirmed its commitment to health and active living. In keeping with the Province’s mandated daily physical activity in schools, and the view that physical education is a vital component of the school curriculum, the Board passed a motion stating that physical education will not be used as a reward or disciplinary tool in its elementary schools.

Full day kindergarten program proves to be successful Results from the first two years of a three-year pilot of full-day senior kindergarten in seven TCDSB schools indicate that students in the program have completed their year with significantly greater gains than those in the half-day program. The study will continue into the final year of the pilot with hopes that additional funding will be provided to allow for expansion of the program.

Upcoming Meeting There are no meetings scheduled for the month of July Wednesday, August 23, 2006 Board

All meetings begin at 7:00 p.m. at the Catholic Education Centre, 80 Sheppard Avenue East, North York.

Starting Monday, June 5, 2006 the Human Resources Department launches the 3rd annual “iCOD Internet Offence Declaration Process to all TCDSB employees, under Ontario Regulation 521/01, for the “2006/07” school year

The Board’s “iCOD” (Internet Criminal Offence Declaration) website will be available for all employees to complete and submit their required offence declaration for the 2006/07 school year. As a reminder to all employees, the Ontario Regulation 521/01 requires all school boards to collect offence declarations from all employees by each September 1. All employees are required to make an annual offence declaration. Failure to do so may result in suspension or termination of employment. The iCOD website is a highly secure, private and confidential. Employees may access this website in the privacy of their homes, at their place of work or at a public library through any web browser that supports a minimum 128-bit encryption.

The iCOD site will be available starting Monday June 5, 2006 through to August 31, 2006. However, we are asking all school-based employees to complete their offence declaration by June 30, 2006. Employees may access iCOD through the following links: • the iCOD website at : https://icod.tcdsb.org • through the Board’s Internet website home page at: http://www.tcdsb.org under the “Staff” page at: http://www.tcdsb.org/staff • through the Board’s Intranet site at: http://intranet.tcdsb.org

Should you need assistance once you are on the iCOD website, you may contact Human Resources at: 416-222-8282, ext. 2999 or e-mail your concerns or questions to [email protected].

Tips to note before logging on to iCOD: For those employees that do remember their iCOD password from last June’s offence declaration process, all you have to do is sign onto iCOD and complete this year’s 2006/07 offence declaration.

For those employees that do not remember their “iCOD password” from last June’s offence declaration process, as well as any new employees that did not participate in the 2005/06 process, please refer to the upper right hand corner of your payslip for “iCOD registration information.” You will need to refer to this information when accessing iCOD to register and complete your declaration:

• Connect to: https://icod.tcdsb.org. You must register as a “new user”. • Once you are in the “Registration for New User” screen, you will be asked to enter a password in a field called “User Password”. This password does not have to be a TCDSB password that you may currently be using for other TCDSB applications. iCOD is a totally separate system, independent from any other TCDSB application. Create your own password for iCOD and privately document this number in your personal belongings. • An iCOD userid will be provided to you by the iCOD application once you have registered. Remember this userid; store it with your iCOD password that you created. • Once you have registered in iCOD, you must continue in the application with the “declaration process”.

MTCEF would like to extend sincere congratulations to Me-Hae Hur of Marshall McLuhan CSS, Antonio De Franco of St. Patrick CSS, Ian Ray Barcarse of Marshall McLuhan CSS and Natasha Ally of Mary Ward CSS for receiving the esteemed Tom Leon Bursary.

The Tom Leon Bursary is a new bursary administered by MTCEF. The bursary has been established exclusively for TCDSB students and will be awarded annually to two female and two male graduates of a TCDSB Secondary School in order to help defray the cost of post-secondary school education. The annual amount of each award will be $1,200.00.

Together with the Tom Leon family, John Wilhelm and members of the Social Work Department and Sara Camilleri of MTCEF selected the recipients for the award by reviewing the dissertations provided by the potential candidates. Winners were selected based on the following criteria: contributions to the school and/or community which reflect Catholic values; personal achievements including any awards; financial need and/or personal challenges; and acceptance into a post-secondary institution

Me-Hae Hur’s essay featured her excellent academics as well as her community service work. Me-Hae played an integral part in designing her school website, performed in the school’s theatrical productions and is a member of the Varsity Volleyball team and Peer Ministry Team. Teresa Me-Hae has also assisted in educational programs for drug awareness and anti-bullying. She has been accepted into York University and we wish her all the best!

Antonio De Franco’s essay highlighted his catholic values through his involvement with Good Shepherd Refuge and Villa Colombo. Antonio’s community and school involvements include his vision to create the first school newspaper The Leprechaun, for which he is the editor. Antonio has been accepted into York University’s Professional Writing program. Congratulations Antonio!

Ian Ray Barcase provided a poignant essay and highlighted his upbringing in the Philippines. Ian is an active member of his school community; he participates in the school Peer Ministry team and serves food to the less fortunate at the Good Shepherd Refuge. For the Tsunami Relief Effort, Ian actively participated by designing and selling t-shirts with proceeds donated to the relief effort. Ian has been accepted to the University of Waterloo’s Business program. Well done Ian and good-luck in Waterloo.

Natasha Ally wrote a compelling essay about her strong faith and belief in Catholic values. She wrote about becoming a social service worker to use her talents to help others. She is an active member of the Big Sister program in her community and volunteers at several cultural events. She ended her dissertation with the following quote: “It is more blessed to give than to receive,” (Acts 20:35). Best wishes Natasha, your essay was inspiring!

St. Mike's student elected as trustee CARRIE BRUNET Inside Toronto (Etobicoke) June 16, 2006

Trying to give students a voice in a world where elected officials make the decisions, the role of student trustee needs to be strengthened, said the newly chosen student trustee. Following in the footsteps of his older brother, Etobicoke resident Ihor Korbabicz a Grade 11 student from St. Michael's Choir School will be the new student trustee for the Toronto Catholic District School Board.

Korbabicz, who was also elected president of the Ontario Student Trustee Association, said he hopes to make the role of student trustee more than just a ceremonial . "Currently our votes can be recorded, but they don't count," said Korbabicz. "We want to be recognized as an official part of the board."

According to the board's policy T.02 "student trustees will attend and participate (but not vote) in all public session meetings of the Board and Standing Committees. In addition the Student Trustee shall have a non-binding, advisory vote during all regular public Board/Committee meetings and such vote will be recorded in the minutes upon the request of the Student Trustees."

Korbabicz feels students should have an official vote. To achieve this recognition, Korbabicz plans to lobby the province in his role as president of the OSTA. "The rights of students need to be recognized at the board," he said. "We need resources."

Ihor said he plans to pursue a career in journalism or politics. He is already involved in his school's newspaper, and has participated in the Model United Nations for the past three years. An environmentalist at heart, he has also volunteered with Toronto Parks and Recreation for clean-up and greening efforts.

He hopes that his experience as student trustee will give him insight into the world of politics and administration. As the student trustee, Korbabicz also chairs the Catholic Student Impact Leadership Team (CSLIT).

Korbabicz will spend the summer shadowing outgoing student trustee Ashley Pereira. He will take over the position officially on Sept. 1.

City Track and Field Champions

For only the third time in the history of the TCSAA, a school has won the Cross Country and Track and Field championship in the same year. St. John had already won their fourth consecutive cross country championship and followed that up on June 12 with their first ever Track and Field championship. The track and field team displayed an unusual balance, not only scoring the most points in the 200 meter event, but also being the high scorer in the distance races and scoring the second highest points in the field events. Natalie Anderson (right) City silver medalist 200metres

The team was led by the outstanding performances of Andrew Hood and Kimberley Taylor, gold medalists at the City Championships in both Track and Cross Country. Natalie Anderson won two City medals on the track, bringing her total to a combined 4 City medals in both sports. Newcomers Nathen Sevigny and Clara Murray (grade 3 students) enjoyed their first experiences competing for St. John as they both won silver medals in the 200 meters. Nathen combined that with his gold team medal from cross country. Yohan Peires and his silver medal were part of an outstanding group of 5 high jumpers, led by Kimberley Taylor's gold medal performance. Head coach John Albert is very enthusiastic about the future of both the Track and Field and Cross Country teams. Every track and field athlete will be returning next year as will 42 of the City participants on the Cross Country team.

Repairing the World – The Asper Foundation Human Rights and Holocaust Studies Program

We are closing in on the final days of the school year anxiously anticipating summer and reflecting on amazing memories. We had a great time in Washington while learning some of life’s most important lessons. Marshall McLuhan C.S.S. had 45 students and 6 teachers join over 450 other Canadian students in Washington D.C. to culminate our months of extra curricular education by witnessing the travesties of the Holocaust and to bring alive the souls of the millions of victims of this crime against humanity.

The students via their personal journey through the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum and through the testimony of Philip Weise, a Holocaust survivor, became aware of the fundamental call for all people to stand up for humanity and to never be silent during the suffering of others. With this experience, the students have decided to make a difference. They have made a commitment to assist the “Save Darfur Campaign” by raising funds in hopes of relieving the suffering of those in Darfur, Africa and through teaching others of our Christian call to accept and love all of God’s people.

On Sept. 27, 2006, the students will be recognized for their work and commitment to the advancement of human rights and Holocaust education. This celebration will include a talk by Judy Cohen, a survivor, who will share her story and testimony.

KEEP COOL IN THE SUMMER THINK GREEN!

This summer is predicted to be very hot, which is good for our students and teachers who can enjoy the weather, but do not forget that the hot summers are at a cost to our overall climate change from global warming.

You can still enjoy the hot summer, however, keeping ‘cool’ doesn’t mean air conditioning. There are many Green ways to keep ‘cool’ during this summer that can minimize your impact on the environment.

TIPS:

1. Open windows when home, and use blinds when out 2. Use fans to circulate and cool the air, instead of air conditioning 3. Plant shady trees and plants. Think about a vegetable garden to feed your family 4. Create a water feature to cool the surroundings and reduce the stresses of the day 5. Minimize your usage of heat producing appliances (i.e. dryer, dishwasher, oven) 6. If you do need to use an air conditioner, increase the temperature setting by a couple of degrees, and use a programmable thermostat 7. Shift your Peak Load energy usage to the evening so that your daily energy consumption is spread out and not concentrated to the Peak times 8. Reduce your car usage to minimize our smog days and keep the blue skies blue 9. Water your grass only in the early morning with 2.5cm (1 inch) per week. Try it on the weekend and incorporate a slip and slide. 10. Drink lots of fluids. When you’re cool, you don’t need lots of energy consuming machines to keep you cool.

At home and at school Computers, Monitors and Lights should be turned off when you leave a room!

Have a great summer and look out for more energy conservation tips and ideas when you come back in September.

You are the salt of the earth. You are the light of the World. Matt. 5:13, 14 THE DIRECTOR’S BULLETIN #40 Those who teach will shine like stars for all eternity. Daniel 12:3
