Daniel 12:3 June 26, 2006 SUBJECT: 1 YEAR-END MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR OF EDUCATION With the rapid approach of the end of the 2005-2006 school year, I am taking this opportunity to thank each and every one of you for your efforts. Whether you work directly with children or in a support capacity, your commitment to serve the students of the Toronto Catholic District School Board is greatly appreciated. Undoubtedly, the summer months will allow you to re-charge your batteries through recreational activities, whether at home, at the cottage or via travel. I fully recognize that many of you may be using a portion of the summer to take additional courses or to continue with professional training. I wish you success in these endeavours as well. On a personal note, my first year as Director of Education has been very rewarding. I had the opportunity to visit more than 50 of our 201 schools. Some of these occasions coincided with an official school blessing, a ground-breaking ceremony, a special school anniversary, a school play, a track meet, a fund- raiser, a Minister’s announcement or other special event. Others were simply routine visits to meet students and staff to ensure that I don’t lose touch with the real purpose of our Catholic school system. In every instance, it was a pleasure to observe your talents, enthusiasm, and efforts in advancing the education of our students. It was also very reassuring to note the many charitable events held for the benefit of the less fortunate. We have had both joyous celebrations and unfortunate tragedies occur during the school year. The prevalence of violence in the City of Toronto and the need for vigilance towards the safety of students and staff surfaced throughout the year. Our response to such events causes us to appreciate each other and the faith to survive difficult situations. Once again, thank you for your support and encouragement during my first year as Director of Education of the Toronto Catholic District School Board. I look forward to continuing to serve you with optimism and faith as we continue to work together for Catholic Education. I wish you and your families a safe, enjoyable and restful holiday. Daniel 12:3 June 26, 2006 SUBJECT: 3a FROM THE BOARD A MONTHLY SUMMARY OF BOARD HIGHLIGHTS AND DECISIONS June 2006 OSSLT Results show improvement The Toronto Catholic District School Board’s results in the March 2006 Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT) show that TCDSB students continue to improve in their overall literacy skills. A total of 81% of first-time eligible students were successful on the assessment. This represents an increase of 3% in achievement compared with the results in the previous year’s assessment, when 78% of students successfully completed the test. The Board continues to provide students with a wide range of programs and services to support all students, with a particular emphasis on supporting students at risk, through its Success for All initiative. One of the most dramatic improvements is in the results shown by 14 schools supported by Ministry Learning Opportunities Grants, where most of the schools experienced improved results, some with as much as 17% increases. As well, the results on the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Course confirm over 85% of our students are also meeting with success. The results are indicative of the additional resources and the many literacy initiatives that have been put in place to support student learning. Individual school and school board results for the March 2006 OSSLT are posted on the EQAO website at www.eqao.com. Donation to Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund The Board was pleased to present a cheque in the amount of $14,103.60 to the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund. The money was collected by TCDSB schools during toonie days held during African Heritage/Black History Month Board endorses official logo The Board of Trustees has rescinded the November 2005 motion that had adopted ‘Faith in Your Child’ design with the TCDSB round maroon logo as the Board’s logo.
