CINÉMA • VISITES CHARLIE CHAPLIN 16 JUIN 2021 — 17 JUIL. 2021 BUSTER KEATON HAROLD LLOYD Programmation de films muets en ciné-concert, Centre de recherche, Galerie des collections, Visites guidées, Galerie des appareils Café, Librairie 1 PROGRAMME PROGRAMME ÉDITORIAL 16 JUIN 2021 - 17 JUIL. 2021 La Fondation Jérôme Seydoux-Pathé présente « Quelle comédie ! », un cycle dédié à Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton et Harold Lloyd, dont le génie burlesque continue de faire rire les spectateurs du monde entier. Composée de leurs longs métrages les plus fameux (The Gold Rush, 1925, Safety Last!, 1923, ou encore Our Hospitality, 1923) ainsi que de plu- sieurs séances de courts métrages, la programmation ravira petits et grands. Le thème de la mer revient régulièrement (Steamboat Bill Jr., 1928 ou A Sailor-Made Man, 1921), préparant en douceur l’arrivée des vacances d’été. En parallèle, une exposition met toujours à l’honneur l’illustrateur de cinéma Yves Thos, qui a notamment signé les affiches des films Il bidone, Les Dents du diable, La Femme et le Pantin ou encore Spartacus. Au début de sa carrière, il travaille pour le Consortium des Arts Publicitaires puis Pilote Publicité, deux sociétés qui collaborent étroi- tement avec Pathé. La Fondation expose principalement des affiches, des maquettes et des documents personnels de l’artiste. Guillaume Boulangé et Christian Rolot, commis- saires de l’exposition et auteurs d’une monographie consacrée à Yves Thos, proposent une visite commentée exceptionnelle, suivie d’une présentation de Marie-Octobre (1959) de Julien Duvivier le 22 juin. Ce mois-ci, nous poursuivons également notre série de projections en lien avec la parution d’ouvrages de cinéma. Autour de la Roue et Autour de Napoléon sont ainsi intro- duits par Elodie Tamayo et suivis d’une signature de son livre Abel Gance, Charles Pathé, Correspondance (1918-1955) publié chez Gallimard. Manon Billaut accompagne la sortie de André Antoine au cinéma. Une méthode expérimentale aux éditions Mimésis avec une projection de L'Arlésienne. Enfin, la Cinémathèque16 dévoile une copie rare en 16 mm de Raymond ne veut plus de femmes (1925) de Paul Iribe et Frank Urson. L’activité jeune public continue quant à elle avec le ciné-spectacle « La Lanterne fait son cirque ». Fin août, la Fondation Jérôme Seydoux-Pathé rouvrira avec un cycle Julien Duvivier et une exposition Autour d'Eiffel, en lien avec la sortie du film de Martin Bourboulon, Eiffel, le 25 août. L’équipe de la Fondation Jérôme Seydoux-Pathé 1 YVES THOS, GALERIE AFFICHISTE DE CINÉMA DES COLLECTIONS JUSQU'AU 17 JUIL. 2021 Fameux illustrateur de cinéma, Yves Thos a créé les affiches de La dolce vita, du Capitan, des Dents du diable, de La Femme et le Pantin, d'Il bidone ou encore de Spartacus. À partir du milieu des années 1950, qui marquent le début de sa carrière, jusqu’aux années 1980, il exprime à travers ses créations un certain esprit du cinéma. Ses talents de portrai- tiste popularisent les visages de vedettes internationales. Il illustre aussi bien des comédies que des films d’action, des intrigues policières que des fresques historiques ainsi que des péplums ou des films de capes et d’épées. « On faisait souvent appel à moi pour des films qui bougent », déclarait-il à Guillaume Boulangé et Christian Rolot, qui viennent de lui consacrer une monographie. Dire l’essentiel à travers une expression, en choisissant quelques éléments du film, synthétiser le sujet en mettant en valeur les personnages par un jeu d’échelle : Yves Thos crée des compositions fortes au service d’un marketing publicitaire de plus en plus exigeant. Dans les premières années de sa carrière, il est embauché par Publidécor, le Consortium des Arts Publicitaires puis par Pilote Publicité, deux sociétés qui travaillent étroitement avec Pathé. Fondation Jérôme Seydoux-Pathé © Yves Thos / La Saif décennies, aux côtés de contemporains comme Jean Mascii, Léo Kouper, André Bertrand et Jacques Fourastié, il est aussi le témoin de l’évolution des techniques d’impression, qui passent de la lithographie à l'offset puis à la photocomposi- tion. Tandis que les affichistes font de plus en plus appel au photomontage, lui reste avant tout un dessinateur et un peintre. La Fondation Jérôme Seydoux-Pathé présente une sélection d’affiches créées par Yves Thos tout au long de sa carrière. Conçue par Guillaume Boulangé et Christian Rolot, cette expo- sition s’inscrit dans le parcours des expositions qui rendent hommage à l’affichiste en 2021, au Carré d’art de Nîmes, à Perpignan et à la Cinémathèque de Toulouse. Elle est organi- sée avec le concours de la collection Yves et Béatrice Thos et de l’Institut Jean Vigo. Elle présente principalement des affiches, des maquettes et des documents personnels de l’illustrateur. Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton et Harold Lloyd vous donnent rendez-vous à la Fondation Jérôme Seydoux-Pathé pendant le cycle « Quelle comédie ! » du 16 juin au 17 juillet 2021. Les trois mousque- taires du cinéma burlesque égayeront petits et grands pen- dant l’été. En 1916, Charlie Chaplin intègre la Mutual Company, où il est doté d’un studio et d’une équipe exclusivement dédiée à la réalisation de ses projets les plus fous. Il y signe là-bas de nombreuses comédies où le personnage de Charlot le vaga- bond ne cesse de s’étoffer et où chaque film est un véritable feu d’artifice d’humour, d’invention et de drôlerie (The Rink ou encore Behind the Screen, 1916). En 1919, il fonde avec Douglas Fairbanks, Mary Pickford et D. W. Griffith la mythique société de distribution et de production United Artists, où il réalise ses films les plus célèbres dont The Gold Rush (1925). De son côté, Buster Keaton, après une riche carrière dans le vaudeville, rencontre Roscoe « Fatty » Arbuckle et décide The Kid Brother, Ted Wilde, 1927 © Carlotta films de se lancer dans l’aventure cinématographique. Ensemble, les deux amis osent les folies les plus périlleuses. Adeptes d’un comique de destruction, leurs aventures se concluent bien souvent dans un joyeux chaos : l’effondrement d’une façade de maison à étage sur Fatty (Back Stage, 1919), une autre sur Keaton (Steamboat Bill Jr., 1928) ou des bureaux de banque complètement dévastés (The Bell Boy, 1918). Harold Lloyd, quant à lui, incarne le citoyen américain qui aspire à la réussite sociale mais que le destin ne cesse de tourmenter. Il se trouve, bien souvent contre sa volonté, entraîné dans de folles péripéties. Tous ceux qui se sou- viennent de lui suspendu au-dessus du vide aux aiguilles d’une horloge (Safety Last!, 1923) savoureront son engage- ment dans la marine pour plaire à son beau-père (A Sailor- Made Man, 1921). Dans Grandma's Boy (1922), c’est le cœur de sa bien-aimée qu’il cherche à conquérir en faisant preuve d’une bravoure inédite. En présentant une sélection d’œuvres de ces génies du gag, la Fondation Jérôme Seydoux-Pathé offre à son public une cure de divertissement et de rire intemporelle. Proceed west down Hollywood Boulevard past Highland, to Mann’s (formerly Grauman’s) Chinese Theater. There, across the street between Highland and Orange, at 6904 Hollywood Blvd., is the former Mary Moll Building (2), which appeared briefly during the film-editing sequence from Sherlock Jr. Turn back east down Hollywood Blvd., and turn right (south) onto Cahuenga, stopping near the corner. The alley on the east side of Cahuenga (3) is the alley from Cops where Keaton grabs a passing car one- handed. Proceed south down Cahuenga a few yards until you reach the parking lot at 1622 Cahuenga (4), the lot where Brown Eyes was kept safe in Go West. This parking lot also appears in The Cameraman. Across the street from the parking lot (5) is the site of the former fire station that appears in Three Ages and The Cameraman.

Three aspects have been taken into account—variable frame rates, suppressed sound and hearing, and projection speeds—to analyze several examples of film to ascertain the techniques used by early filmmakers. I have also applied my findings of the techniques of yesteryear to contemporary films that have tried to imitate the early era production methods, in order to present the possibilities and difficulties in reproducing and utilizing the “old” language. The thesis also examines what separated the early era from the modern era, thus identifying future avenues of research. In so doing, I have introduced two novel diegetic terms, namely mimodiegetic and volodiegetic, with the former referring to sound imitating the visuals and the latter relating to a volatile sound rising from the image. Neither of the terms represents a technique, or, for that matter, are restricted to the early era—both rather provide a means to define a specific technique. Finally, based on my findings, I argue that the early film language is problematic to utilize fully today but that it is, at the same time, not confined to the early era. Even with all the praise, little has been known about Sybil. Who was this young woman who just happened to enhance some of the greatest short comedies of all time? She was a California girl, born Sybil Travilla on January 2, 1900, only a couple of days into the start of the 20th century. Her parents were Harry Richard Travilla and his wife Lucie Travilla, of French, English and Scottish descent. Sybil was the second youngest of seven children: Edith, Guy, Jack, Ford, Elaine and Connie. The Travillas lived in the Los Angeles area, mostly in San Bernardino. They also lived briefly on Catalina Island, a small island off the coast which was later considered a playground for Hollywood’s elite. Pennsylvania-born Harry Travilla was a businessman, described by one local paper as “one of the most gentlemanly men it has been our good fortune to meet for some time.” He was at various times a hotel- keeper, the owner of a saloon called The Office and a tire dealer. Sybil had an athletic family. All three of her broth- ers were champion swimmers who had participated in numerous competitions in Catalina.

New works are continually discovered and added to this bibliography. Readers and researchers are invited to suggest additional content. This volume contains an alphabetical listing of audio-visual materials. Coverage of this material begins around 1994, the final year covered by De Waal's bibliography, but may not yet be totally up-to-date (given the ongoing nature of this bibliography). It is hoped that other titles will be added at a later date. The first volume in this supplement focuses on monographic and serial titles, arranged alphabetically by author or main entry.
