His autobiography, “Hobbo: Motor Racer, Motor Mouth”, is a romp of a read.

ROADRUNNER RAMBLINGS MAY 2021 5 DAVID COWART – TAMPA, FL One of IMSA’s most-successful GT category racers in the late 1970s and early 80s, Dave was the Camel GTO series titlist and Most Improved Driver in 1978 with his Porsche RSR, then switched to the radical Red Lobster-sponsored BMW M1 in1981 where he became a repeat champion. David with fellow co-driver and business partner Charles Mendez took over the promotion of the 12 Hours of Sebring in 1978. Recognized for his contribution to the return of Sebring to its international prominence David was inducted into the Sebring Hall of Fame in One of many RRDC members with humble starts in SCCA Club Racing before turning semi-pro, Dave began racing in 1969 with a then-10-year old Fiat Abarth Double Bubble.

CHARLES E. MENDEZ, JR – SANTA FE, NM Charles combined his passion for racing with the successful resurrection of the famed 12 Hours of Sebring. Under his guidance, with racing partner Dave Cowart, in 1978 the Sebring tradition was returned to international prominence with official FIA listing and the return of major corporate sponsors, auto manufacturers and the media. The 1978 race was recognized as an absolute success with Sebring’s future now firmly established and Charles with co- drivers Brain Redman and Bob Garretson drove the Dick Barbour to the overall victory. In 1979 Charles ran a single car effort in his ex-Hagestad/Haywood Porsche 935 with sponsorship from Busch Beer and Coca Cola. By mid-year he and Bob Akin purchased a former George Loos factory 935 which Charles ran the remainder of the year with a win at its first outing at the Daytona Paul Revere 250, co driven with . I began traveling to Sebring International Raceway for more inspiration. I followed IMSA racing to Road Atlanta, Daytona International Raceway and Long Beach. My work has been featured at the Seven Sebring Hotel, The Boston Cup Classic Car Show, Cars on 5th, Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance, The Monaco Grand Prix, and The Chattanooga Motorcar Festival. I have exhibited at galleries and museums in Florida, California, Michigan, Massachusetts, New York and Monaco. I have collectors throughout the world.

I love how vehicles tell the history of racing, culture, technology, and innovation. In my latest series, I explore Porsche’s evolution.

I have specialized in automotive art for over ten years and have completed over one hundred commissions. Every subject, from rare exotic cars to a 1970s work van, has a story that I am challenged to visually communicate through my artwork. I feel incredibly lucky that every painting and every project provide the opportunity for exploration and growth.

I look forward to meeting all of you at the Farewell Banquet and Legends Dinner.

ROADRUNNER RAMBLINGS MAY 2021 9 Tesuque & Chimayo SATURDAY MAY 29, SUNDAY MAY 30 46.2 MILES

Enjoy a morning drive through the pueblos of Tesuque, Pojoaque, and Nambe to arrive in the village of Chimayo. Settled long ago during the Spanish colonization, the area is made up from a cluster of small plazas. The Spanish culture remains strong, with many of their descendants still living here.

Our tour destinations are scattered throughout the village of Chimayo. Feel free to visit them in any order. The Santuario is on the way out of town and has ample parking.

• El Santuario de Chimayo. An iconic building in Northern New Mexico, This Catholic church was built in the early 19th century and represents some of New Mexico’s best architecture. During Holy Week more than 30,000 religious pilgrims make a trek to this sacred place. The outside gardens provide great photo opportunities, while many shops around the main entrance sell curios and souvenirs - pick up some of the famous Chimayo Chile while you’re here!

• Oviedo Carvings and Bronze. This gallery is up the road about a mile from the entrance to the main village but well worth a stop. Marco Oviedo is an 8th generation woodworker who carves traditional wooden bultos, or sculptures of saints. He is also known for his bronze castings which are made using the “lost wax technique”. Visit his website at: http://www.oviedoart.us/ Note: The driveway is not near as bad as it looks…lots of Porsches have visited here.

• Ortega’s Weaving Studio offers 7th and 8th generation traditional Spanish weavings and has been in this location since 1900. They have weaving history roots that date back to the original Spanish Colonists. The Chimayo Museum and Ortega Art Gallery are located next door. Their website: http:// www.ortegasweaving.com/.

10 ROADRUNNER RAMBLINGS MAY 2021 2021 Los Alamos and the Jemez SATURDAY MAY 29, SUNDAY MAY 30 94.4 MILES

This tour will take us on a scenic and often exhilarating drive through the hills, canyons, and mountain roads of the Jemez Mountains, returning through the Atomic City of Los Alamos and scenic views of the Rio Grande Valley.

Our tour begins with a drive up through the modern pueblos of Tesuque and Pojoaque. Be sure to pit for fuel and facilities if required, as the road to the Jemez can be fairly remote. From the modern highway, we will turn towards the Bandelier, home of ancient Puebloan ruins. Our trip will snake up through the foothills of the Jemez Mountains and eventually down into the spectacular Valles Caldera where herds of elk may be seen grazing off in the distance.

The road beckons further, but in the interest of returning home at a reasonable hour, our prescribed route has us making a U-turn at the scenic vista and following the road backwards from the way we came. Enjoy, as all of our uphill driving now becomes downhill a slalom at times.

A left turn after we re-emerge from the mountain road will take us towards Los Alamos. Be prepared to stop and check in with the security guard before entering onto the road through Los Alamos National Laboratories - home of the atomic bomb and many other world-changing technologies. Over the bridge and onto the civilian mesa where the actual town is located. Leaving the mesa and for the valley below, enjoy the drive - the road is full of picture postcard views of the Rio Grande Valley and the pueblo villages of San Ildefonso, Pojoaque, and Santa Clara.

Lunch at Gabriel’s Restaurant on the way back into Santa Fe.

ROADRUNNER RAMBLINGS MAY 2021 11 Northern New Mexico Roads: Abiquiu and Taos SATURDAY MAY 29 173 MILES / 243 MILES ROUNDTRIP

Are you looking for a true driving adventure? Do you want to see a part of New Mexico that is nowhere near an Interstate? If so, go for a run through our northern New Mexico roads that were surely made for P-cars. You will see some of the finest mountain scenery in the Southwest as you twist and turn through the Carson National Forest, which covers over 1.5 million acres. The elevations around you rise from 6,000 feet to 13,000 feet during the drive past Wheeler Peak, the highest point in New Mexico.

This 250-mile adventure begins as you head north via Pojoaque and Abiquiu for a view of the scenic hills painted by Georgia O’Keeffe. Make a pit stop in Tierra Amarilla before heading east to Taos for lunch. The roads in this very scenic part of NM are a great place to let your Porsche horses breathe deep for some good exercise.

On the way towards Taos, you will pass the “Earthship Biotecture” community. It’s a hard thing to describe, but you’ll know it when you see it! Check it out at www.earthship.com/.

We’ll make a stop at the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge. The bridge is 650 feet above the Rio Grande River, and it is the 5th highest bridge in the United States.

On to Taos for lunch! Reserved parking can be found for the PCA at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church parking lot. Walk over to the plaza…there are many great places to grab some “eats” around the area including the PCA reservation at the Gorge Restaurant. Things may be busy because of the influx of tourists over Memorial Day Weekend, so be sure to take advantage of the number of small restaurants tucked in around the plaza and its side streets.

After you’ve finished lunch, return is on your own to Santa Fe. Enjoy the High Road back to Santa Fe or the Low Road along the Rio Grande canyon down through Española.

12 ROADRUNNER RAMBLINGS MAY 2021 2021 Northern New Mexico: Ojo Caliente and Chama SATURDAY MAY 29, SUNDAY MAY 30 257 MILES ROUNDTRIP

Note: An additional $35 per person is requested on this trip for lunch service at the Quinlan Ranch. Limit of 20 cars per day.

In this truly epic drive, some of the best roads of North- ern New Mexico will be featured as we make our way to the exclusive Quinlan Ranch for a catered lunch.

From DeVargas Center, we will take the highway north along the US285 corridor. Passing through the town of Española, stop for fuel and facilities before the US84/285 junction as there will be limited stops for a while. From here, we will make our way up to the pictur- esque Ojo Caliente valley. Make note of the namesake town as we pass through -- you’ll want to come back to enjoy the hot springs here sometime in the future.

Continuing on towards the Carson National Forest, we will take a left at the old railroad stop of Tres Piedras and onto Highway 64. First laid down in 1926, this section of tarmac is one of the highest roads of New Mexico, topping out at the Brazos Pass at 10,507 feet. Enjoy the spectacular scenery as well as all manner of turns, twists, and straights - culminating in the arrival into Tierra Amarilla on the far side.

Heading North from Tierra Amarilla, we will come to the town of Chama. A short jog on the continuation of Highway 64 to the west of town will find you at the entrance to the Quinlan Ranch about three miles down. This incredible private 17,000 acre ranch hosts world- class hunting and fishing, and is open to us exclusively through personal invitation of the owner. Enjoy lunch!

For your return to Santa Fe, we will take a straight jog down US84 back through Tierra Amarilla and on to the Georgia O’Keefe country in Abiquiu. Enjoy the watercol- or rocks and wide-open range in this most picturesque terrain. Onwards toward Santa Fe and a well deserved rest. You’ve certainly earned it.

This drive will afford participants the spectacular scenery of the Cerrillos Hills and the back foothills of the Sandia Mountains as we make our way down the Turquoise Trail to a visit at Porsche of Albuquerque.

First: A short little jaunt through town to get us in position. We’ll follow the Old Pecos Trail out of town to get us to the satellite community of Eldorado. Don’t worry about the traffic lights as there will be plenty of time to rejoin the group on the open roads once we’re out of town.

Passing through Eldorado, we will join the road towards passing the old town of Lamy where the stone to build the Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis in the middle of Santa Fe was quarried. Onwards past the ranches of the Galisteo Basin to the namesake small town of Galisteo. Take a right at the church and enjoy the road. Also: *mind the hard crossing at the railroad tracks about 2.3 miles from the church!*

We will pick up Highway 14 and tour through the towns of Cerrillos, Madrid, and Golden on the way to the east face of the Sandia Mountains. A quick pit stop before we continue on, and onto old Route 66 and eventually joining the modern I-40 for our cruise to Porsche of Albuquerque.

Feel free to return to Santa Fe for dinner on your own after the reception at Porsche of Albuquerque.
