EVENTS IN 5673—INTRODUCTION 221 EVENTS IN 5673 JULY 1, 1912, TO JUNE 30, 1913 INTRODUCTION I In the events of the year 5G73 for the Jewry, the Balkan Wars rank first. Waged with incredible brutality, they brought widespread suffering to the Jews in the former limits of the Turkish Empire. The success of the Balkan States has re- sulted in the transfer of 120,000 Jews from Turkish sov- ereignty, under which they have lived since their exile from Spain and Portugal. Servia and particularly Greece now have large Jewish communities within their territory, and the Bul- garian Jewry will be greatly enlarged. Roumania adds to her population and citizenship the Jews of Silistria. For the Balkan Jewry, the change involves new conditions, social and economic as well as political. Their situation in what was formerly Turkey in Europe, and their future, as described by the representatives of the Jewish organizations of Europe and America that united for the work of relief, cannot but be of great concern to the Jews the world over (see pp. 188-206). Notable in connection with the Balkan War are two things: the prompt and generous response of the prosperous Jewries in Western Europe and America to the Balkan distress, and the effort to secure a guarantee for the civil and political liberty and equality of the Jews in the conquered territory. An in- ternational association, the Union des Associations Israelites, 222 AMERICAN JEWISH YEAR BOOK was formed for unifying relief work and effort toward the re- habilitation of the ruined communities. Representatives were dispatched to the scene to insure systematic action, and a study made of the situation with a view to the permanent improve- ment of conditions among the 200,000 Jews in the former boundaries of Turkey in Europe. -

„One-sidedly Artistic“ Georg Kolbe in the Nazi Era By Ursel Berger 0 One of the most discussed topics concerning Georg Kolbe involves his work and his stance during the Nazi era. These questions have also been at the core of all my research on Kolbe and I have frequently dealt with them in a variety of publications 1 and lectures. Kolbe’s early work and his artistic output from the nineteen twenties are admired and respected. Today, however, a widely held position asserts that his later works lack their innovative power. This view, which I also ascribe to, was not held by most of Kolbe’s contemporaries. In order to comprehend the position of this sculptor as well as his overall historical legacy, it is necessary, indeed crucial, to examine his œuvre from the Nazi era. It is an issue that also extends over and beyond the scope of a single artistic existence and poses the overriding question concerning the role of the artist in a dictatorship. Georg Kolbe was born in 1877 and died in 1947. He lived through 70 years of German history, a time characterized by the gravest of political developments, catastrophes and turning points. He grew up in the German Empire, celebrating his first artistic successes around 1910. While still quite young, he was active (with an artistic mission) in World War I. He enjoyed his greatest successes in the Weimar Republic, especially in the latter half of the nineteen twenties—between hyperinflation and the Great Depression. He was 56 years old when the Nazis came to power in 1933 and 68 years old when World War II ended in 1945. -

Ein Blick auf diese Karte vermittelt Namen von Straßenzügen und auch Objektbezeichnungen, die sich von den heutigen deutlich unterscheiden. Namen wie das Kapuziner- Inhalte (Deutschtum im Ausland) besonders an. Auch vereinnahmte his- kloster und der Kapuzinerberg oder die Edmundsburg am Mönchsberg torische Gestalten, wie Paracelsus oder die „Helden“ des Bauernkriegs, waren ebenso verschwunden wie einige alte Straßennamen, darunter die wurden bemüht. Es erfolgte aber – wie auch in anderen Städten des Deut- Franziskanergasse, der Giselakai oder die Auerspergstraße. Neue waren schen Reiches – keine „ausschließliche Straßenstürmerei“ (M. Weidner) an ihre Stelle getreten, wie eine „Straße der SA“ oder das Langemarck- und zahlreichen Neubenennungen fehlt jeglicher NS-Bezug4. Es wurde Ufer. -

Funda BERKSOY 165 RUDOLF BELLING AND HIS CONTRIBUTION TO TURKISH SCULPTURE During the years following the World War I Rudolf Belling (1886- 1972), a pioneer of abstract sculpture, became one of the most celebrated artists in Germany (Fig.1). His fame was based primarily on works such as his Triad (1919) and Sculpture 23 (1923), in which he strove toward a synthesis of Russian revolutionary art with the current modernist trends. As a member of the Arbeitsrat für Kunst (Workers’ Council on Art) and a cofounder of the Novembergruppe, he also sought a closer relationship between sculpture and architecture, successfully collaborat- ing on many occasions with architects. In the German literature on mod- ern art of the period, Belling was highly praised and embraced as one of the spokesmen of the new art1. When the National Socialists came to power in 1933 and started their campaign against avant-garde art, like many other artists, Belling too sought refuge abroad∞; accepting an invitation from the Turkish govern- ment he left Berlin for Istanbul in 1937. Interview with Roger Strauch, representative of the coheirs of Rudolf Mosse March 7, 2017 Kulturstiftung der Länder (KSL): With the project on Rudolf Mosse’s patronage and his lost art collection, Germany will launch its first joint research project into Nazi-looted art with the owner’s heirs. The Mosse heirs – whom you represent – will support the project not only in principle but also as a financial partner. Why do you support the German efforts to reconstruct the Mosse art collection and what do you expect in terms of results? Roger Strauch (RS): We are partners in a serious and conscientious effort to locate Mosse artifacts wherever they are in the world. The Mosse heirs would like to recover stolen assets and to renew academic and popular inter- est in the achievements of a proud, prominent and successful German fami- ly. We are combining our investigative resources, human and financial, to engage in an intensive and comprehensive effort to achieve these objectives. KSL: What is your experience with German reactions to art restitution so far, especially where German museums are concerned? RS: Over the last several years, we have been fortunate to successfully work with many impressive cultural and institutional leaders in Germany. Of course, we appreciate that our ownership claims can be uncomfortable and awkward for the custodians of Mosse artifacts. Not everyone has responded constructively. But I can honestly say that all of the German public institu- tions have been responsive and diligent in their efforts to review our claims. We are impressed and grateful for the understanding and sensitivity we have encountered and are especially appreciative for the leadership from Ms. -

Translation SPIEGEL article – 4/20/2016 In the name of the father Looted Art – An auction of three paintings, which were long in possession of a museum, will divide the art world. Embarrassingly late, these pieces were revealed as looted art. They belong to the heirs of the legendary publisher Mosse family, who are claiming back hundreds of more pieces. These three paintings, all three of great power, all three once stolen by the Nazis tell about German history in their own way. The fact that these shall now be auctioned is a sensation. It is possible because restitution has been achieved, because the pieces have been returned to the heirs of their true owners. However, not everybody will appreciate the sale, the auction will even divide the art community. These are paintings by Adolph Menzel, Wilhelm Leibl and Ludwig von Hofmann, leading artists of the 19th century. The portrayals – two paintings, one drawing – have been displayed in museums in Germany and Switzerland for many years, and nobody expected that they would ever be available on the market again. In the past one, two years though, it was found that they were looted art; by now they have been returned to the heirs of the Jewish family, which purchased these over a hundred years ago – and the Berlin auction house “Villa Grisebach” will auction the objects on behalf of the heirs on June 1st. And this is only the first highlight of a gigantic looted art case, which will occupy the country for a long time yet. A wave of restitution claims could follow.
