The Story of the Colorado Outward Bound School How the Colorado Outward Bound School came to be. Kurt Hahn was born in 1886 in Berlin, Germany to Jewish parents. When he was nineteen, Hahn suffered a severe sunstroke. His recovery required him to stay inside, in dark conditions for a year and avoid sun and heat for the rest of his life. During this time, Hahn developed an idea for a new kind of school that would focus on nurturing personal responsibility, kindness, and justice. Hahn identified six declines that he felt were the fall of modern youth: 1. Decline of Fitness due to modern methods of locomotion/activity 2. Decline of Initiative and Enterprise due to the widespread disease of spectatoritis (excessive indulgence in forms of amusement in which one is a passive spectator rather than an active participant) 3. Decline of Memory and Imagination due to the confused restlessness of modern life 4. Decline of Skill and Care due to the weakened tradition of craftsmanship 5. Decline of Self-Discipline due to the ever-present availability of stimulants and tranquilizers 6. Decline of Compassion due to the unseemly haste with which modern life is conducted or “spiritual death” In response to these declines, Hahn also came up with four solutions to combat these declines. 1. Fitness Training – to compete with one’s self in physical fitness; in doing so, train the discipline and determination of the mind through the body 2. Expeditions – to engage in long, challenging endurance tasks 3. Projects – involving crafts and manual skills 4. Rescue Service – first aid, fire-fighting, etc. -

EVENTS IN 5673—INTRODUCTION 221 EVENTS IN 5673 JULY 1, 1912, TO JUNE 30, 1913 INTRODUCTION I In the events of the year 5G73 for the Jewry, the Balkan Wars rank first. Waged with incredible brutality, they brought widespread suffering to the Jews in the former limits of the Turkish Empire. The success of the Balkan States has re- sulted in the transfer of 120,000 Jews from Turkish sov- ereignty, under which they have lived since their exile from Spain and Portugal. Servia and particularly Greece now have large Jewish communities within their territory, and the Bul- garian Jewry will be greatly enlarged. Roumania adds to her population and citizenship the Jews of Silistria. For the Balkan Jewry, the change involves new conditions, social and economic as well as political. Their situation in what was formerly Turkey in Europe, and their future, as described by the representatives of the Jewish organizations of Europe and America that united for the work of relief, cannot but be of great concern to the Jews the world over (see pp. 188-206). Notable in connection with the Balkan War are two things: the prompt and generous response of the prosperous Jewries in Western Europe and America to the Balkan distress, and the effort to secure a guarantee for the civil and political liberty and equality of the Jews in the conquered territory. An in- ternational association, the Union des Associations Israelites, 222 AMERICAN JEWISH YEAR BOOK was formed for unifying relief work and effort toward the re- habilitation of the ruined communities. Representatives were dispatched to the scene to insure systematic action, and a study made of the situation with a view to the permanent improve- ment of conditions among the 200,000 Jews in the former boundaries of Turkey in Europe. -

Nicholas James Veevers DISSERTATION PRESENTED IN PART FULFILMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS OF THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF SCIENCE IN OUTDOOR EDUCATION UNIVERSITY OF EDINBURGH MORAY HOUSE SCHOOL OF EDUCATION (2006) This dissertation is dedicated to the most honourable man I have ever met, my father, Jim Veevers, who died after a long illness during its construction. To him I owe my love of the outdoors. “Because I had the opportunities he did not” ABSTRACT It appears that Kurt Hahn (1886 – 1974) did not produce a specific piece of work which traced, in detail, his development of outdoor activities. Research indicated that, although there have been studies examining his educational theory as a whole, there have been no detailed studies which have specifically investigated Hahn’s development of outdoor activities in an historical context. As Hahn was one of the field’s greatest advocates, a historical study, tracing his development of outdoor activities, was needed to document these events. The aim was to provide the most in-depth historical account possible (up to, and including the 1944 Education Act) and so provide a clearer version of events than existed previously. The research used an inductive approach based on primary data (documents, interviews, correspondence) which was processed using thematic analysis. These findings show that Hahn’s development of outdoor activities is much more complicated than the often quoted fact of him being one of the founders of Outward Bound in 1941. For an accurate understanding of Hahn’s contribution to the outdoor experiential education field this should be recognised. -

THE FIRST MOVES ALONG a line from youth to old age, the chronicle of events and entanglements through which people weave their lives into the collective history around them. The other springs from the invisible center within a life; it moves outward from a moment of self- discovery, which knows no beginning and no end, suffusing one's whole existence, and others beyond it, with the meaning of experience. In the first, the chronicle of a life, sequence is crucial. Time and place, the context of growth, an ability to capitalize on circumstance - these are the stuff of life histories when seen as linear progression. Victory comes in leaps and bounds of clever adaptation, the string of successes and compromises through which one creates for oneself a place in the world. Although some of his surviving diary entries dated from July and August 1914 as representative of the German Foreign Office’s Press office were later rewritten, these entries together with his letters shed important light onto the intentions, decisions, and justification attempts of Germany’s head of government. His diary entries during the First World War as the personal assistant of Chancellor Theobald von Bethmann Hollweg (1856-1921) have surpassed any of his scholarly writings in terms of lasting importance. His diary and his personal correspondence with his fiancé Käthe Liebermann (1885-1952) – Max Liebermann’s (1847-1935) daughter whom he married in 1915 – are particularly relevant for the summer of 1914. The original version of the diary entries on the so-called July Crisis did not survive and thus the authenticity of these passages is disputable from a critical source and editorial perspective. Yet even Riezler’s later reworking of these entries, despite the poor editing, gives valuable insight into the mind of Bethmann Hollweg. -

We will study continuities and changes in politics, society, and culture and examine the lasting impact of World War I and II, the Third Reich and the Holocaust. AIMS AND AGENDA This course will introduce students to the history and culture of Modern Germany, one of the leading powers of today’s Europe. We will start with the study of politics, society and culture of Imperial April 28, 2019 2 Germany (1875-1918) and the First World War, which ended with a defeat for Germany and led to the November Revolution of 1918. One central time period of our investigation will be Weimar Germany (1919-1933) with its exciting metropolitan culture and reform-oriented politics in all areas of everyday life and culture: art, design and mass media, gender relations, healthcare, housing, and welfare. We also will study the hyperinflation of 1921-23 and the Great Depression and their consequences on politics and society, particularly the rise of conservatism and communism, militarism and National Socialism. The other central period will be the Third Reich (1933-1945) with its racist and imperialist policy that led to World War II and the Holocaust. -
