Biography Born on 3 December 1895, Anna Freud was the youngest of Sigmund and Martha Freud's six children. She was a lively child with a reputation for mischief. Freud wrote to his friend Fliess in 1899: „Anna has become downright beautiful through naughtiness..." Anna finished her education at the Cottage Lyceum in Vienna in 1912, but had not yet decided upon a career. In 1914 she travelled alone to England to improve her English. She was there when war was declared and thus became an "enemy alien". Later that year she began teaching at her old school, the Cottage Lyceum. A photo shows her with the 5th class of the school c.1918. One of her pupils later wrote: "This young lady had far more control over us than the older 'aunties'." Already in 1910 Anna had begun reading her father's work, but her serious involvement in psychoanalysis began in 1918, when her father started psychoanalyzing her. (It was not anomalous for a father to analyze his own daughter at this time, before any orthodoxy had been established.) In 1920 they both attended the International Psychoanalytical Congress at The Hague. They now had both work and friends in common. One common friend was the writer and psychoanalyst Lou Andreas- Salomé, who was once the confidante of Nietzsche and Rilke and who was to become Anna Freud's confidante in the 1920s. Through her, the Freuds also met Rilke, whose poetry Anna Freud greatly admired. Her volume of his „Buch der Bilder" bears his dedication, commemorating their first meeting. -

International PSYCHOANALYSIS News Magazine of the International Psychoanalytical Association Volume 17, December 2008 Obituary: W. Ernest Freud (1914 –2008) W. Ernest Freud is best known as the 18-month-old child that Sigmund Freud observed playing ‘fort, da’ and described in Beyond the Pleasure Principle (1920). What is less known is that he was also Freud’s only grandchild to become a psychoanalyst. Once, when asked when his psychoanalytic training began, W. Ernest Freud replied, ‘In my mother’s belly.’ Ernest was the son of Freud’s second daughter, Sophie Freud, and Max Halberstadt, a portrait photographer. He was born Ernst Wolfgang Halberstadt on 11 March 1914 in Hamburg, Germany, but changed his name to W. Ernest Freud after the Second World War, partly because he felt his German sounding name would be a liability in post-war England and partly because he always felt closer to the Freud side of his family. When Ernest was born, Freud sent a note to Sandor Ferenczi: ‘Dear friend, Tonight (10th/11th) at 3 o’clock a little boy, my first grandchild! Very strange! An oldish feeling, respect for the wonders of sexuality!’ (Brabant, 1993, p. 545) Ernest’s life was full of tragedy and courage, love and work. He enjoyed a blissful infancy with his mother, while his father was at war; and when his father returned, Ernest experienced him as an unwelcome intruder. When Ernest was four, his brother, Heinerle, was born and he too was experienced as an intruder. After the war, Sophie became pregnant again but contracted the Spanish Flu and died, with her third baby in her womb. -

INTERVIEW WITH ROBERT BLOCH - 1 - By Jean-Marc Lofficier INTERVIEW WITH ROBERT BLOCH Randy and Jean-Marc Lofficier RL: Who do you consider to be at the root of your inspiration for your writing of terror and horror fiction? RB: Well, I spent eleven years in an advertising agency! Actually, as a child I was interested in reading that sort of thing. But, I was more interested, and I think most imaginative children are, in the mysteries of death, age and cruelty. Why do these things happen? Why do people do these things to one another? An innocent child believes in the protection and security of his daddy and mama, his friends and his safe home environment. Then to read and learn about these things is a great shock. I've done a good deal of talking with many other contemporary writers of this sort of fiction, people like Stephen King, Peter Straub, Richard Matheson and half-a- dozen others. They all had the same experience; they all feel this was their motivation. Some kids don't think about these things particularly, but I did. Particularly when I was hiding under the bed or in the closet after seeing something like Lon Chaney in The Phantom of the Opera for the first time at the age of 8 or 9. I decided, as I guess most of these people did, if you can't lick ‘em, join ‘em. So, I learned the method of what it is that terrifies other people as well. Yet, I tried to do it in a way that is safe. -

Obsessions, paranoia, wilful acts of self-destruction surround us constantly. Though we age we still hear the cries of those for whom the attraction to mournful chaos is monumental.” Because of this common contemporary feeling, our age can be called, what Teresa Brennan has termed “the age of paranoia” (Brennan 20). Everything we experience seems to belong to a global world of technological information that gives us access to instantaneous “contact”, giving also the feeling that we live in a reality that does not exist, or only exists in our minds as a kind of imaginary construct, leading to what Freud called a fixation in a narcissistic state of being. -

It surveys the career of its director, William Castle, a legendary Hollywood huckster famous for his use of gimmicks to attract audiences to his low- budget horror films. Our particular focus is Percepto!, the simple but effective gimmick created for The Tingler to deliver physical “shocks” to viewers. The operation, deployment and promotion of Percepto! are explored in detail, based on recently-discovered documents provided to exhibitors by Columbia Pictures, the film’s distributor. The Psychology of Satan Jennifer Putnam This paper was written for Dr. Thomas! Milton course. It was presented at the 2009 Sigma Tau Delta International Convention. John Milton!s Satan is a psychologically complex character. Satan has qualities which make him a brilliant leader, but which also cause him great pain. He is a militant ruler with powerful speeches, and a cunning deceiver with rich disguises. The actions Satan takes, however, cause him great an- guish. It is through his soliloquies that Satan takes off his mask and reveals the troubled person he really is. John Milton in Paradise Lost portrays Satan as a proud, passionately manipulative, and complex character that endures an internal conflict from which he cannot escape. Though Milton begins his masterpiece in medias res, we must start from the beginning with Satan as the angel Lucifer. Lucifer enjoys his high stature in Heaven, until the Son is anointed instead of him, and he becomes jeal- ous. It is then that Lucifer draws emotionally away from God and Heaven. James Holley Hanford and James Taaffe show the results of this jealousy by commenting, “Following God!s announcement of the Son!s elevation, Satan initially defected from the angelic forces” (172). His defection is a result of be- ing too proud of being a servant, which leads to anger and thus, his rebellion. Royland Frye points out the irony of Satan!s refusal to become a slave in that Satan actually becomes a slave to his emotions. Frye says, “As a result of his choice, he becomes a slave to what would, psychologically, be called an "ego- deal,! an identification of the self with an impossible image,” (35). -

The Early History of Psychoanalysis in San Francisco Daniel Benveniste, Ph.D. Caracas, Venezuela The early history of psychoanalysis in San Francisco formally begins with the opening of Alfred Kroeber’s psychoanalytic office in 1918 and ends with the death of Siegfried Bernfeld in 1953. Between those years, San Francisco witnessed a small group of Americans and European émigrés coming together and creating the foundation of psychoanalysis in San Francisco. The issues dominating the day were those of lay analysis, psychoanalytic training models and World War II. Within this small psychoanalytic community, there were a number of extremely creative analysts who, along with the rest, participated in some rare moments in which a creative and ecumenical spirit prevailed and others in which divisiveness limited them. Without a historical context, those of us in the depth psychologies tend to become arrogant and assert the ahistorical and timeless truth of our views. We fall victim to "the narcissism of minor differences" and project our dreaded other onto the various others around us whether they be pop psychology innovators, old guard upholders of the dogma, or just our theoretical cousins. But psychoanalysis is not a natural science. It is a historical science. Nathan Adler used to say, "Every generation must rediscover psychoanalysis for itself." And I would add that we must contextualize our discoveries and re-discoveries in the social, historical and economic moment in which we are situated. There are many reasons for recalling the early history of the depth psychologies in San Francisco. -

Psycho By Charles Taylor “The A List: The National Society of Film Critics’ 100 Essential Films,” 2002 Reprinted by permission of the author The impact of Alfred Hitchcock’s “Psycho” owes so much to its two big surprises that when the film opened in 1960 Hitchcock not only refused to allow press screenings but had theaters hire Pinkerton security guards to prevent latecomers from entering the theater once the picture had started. He wanted to keep the people who hadn’t bought tickets from finding out that Janet Leigh’s Marion Crane is stabbed to death in the shower only forty-five minutes into the movie, and that the murderer is Antho- ny Perkins’s Norma Bates, who has succumbed to the personality of the mother he murdered years before. In many ways, “Psycho” seems like a death knell for the studio system that would lumber on for a few more years before collapsing later in the decade under the weight of filmmakers and audiences sick of the old stultified formu- Alfred Hitchcock holding a clapper on the set of “Psycho.” las. It isn’t just that Hitchcock made the film fast and on Courtesy Library of Congress the cheap (it cost only $800,000), using the crew from his television anthology series “Alfred Hitchcock Presents.” We are as anxious for Norman not to be found out cover- And it’s not just the shock of the shower murder, its bril- ing up “mother’s” crime as we were for Marion not to get liant and savage elisions heralding and in many cases sur- caught stealing the $40,000 that started her on the jour- passing the screen violence to come. -
A Brief History of the British Psychoanalytical Society
A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE BRITISH PSYCHOANALYTICAL SOCIETY Ken Robinson When Ernest Jones set about establishing psychoanalysis in Britain, two intertwining tasks faced him: establishing the reputation of psychoanalysis as a respectable pursuit and defining an identity for it as a discipline that was distinct from but related to cognate disciplines. This latter concern with identity would remain central to the development of the British Society for decades to come, though its inflection would shift as the Society sought first to mark out British psychoanalysis as having its own character within the International Psychoanalytical Association, and then to find a way of holding together warring identities within the Society. Establishing Psychoanalysis: The London Society Ernest Jones’ diary for 1913 contains the simple entry for October 30: “Ψα meeting. Psycho-med. dinner” (Archives of the British Psychoanalytical Society, hereafter Archives). This was the first meeting of the London Psychoanalytical Society. In early August Jones had returned to London from ignominious exile in Canada after damaging accusations of inappropriate sexual conduct in relation to children. Having spent time in London and Europe the previous year, he now returned permanently, via Budapest where from June he had received analysis from Ferenczi. Once in London he wasted no time in beginning practice as a psychoanalyst, seeing his first patient on the 14th August (Diary 1913, Archives), though he would soon take a brief break to participate in what would turn out to be a troublesome Munich Congress in September (for Jones’s biography generally, see Maddox [2006]). Jones came back to a London that showed a growing interest in unconscious phenomena and abnormal psychology. -
