The selection, it must be emphasised, is not arbitrary: Freud and his daughter, Anna, represent the 'orthodox' or mainstream school of psychoanalysis, while Melanie Klein and her followers, of whom Susan Isaacs was the most outstanding English educator, represent a schismatic but influential grouping which has remained controversial ever since. It is important to emphasise, too, that the thesis is not another critique of psychoanalytic theory but, rather, concerns itself with two questions: (1) What is the educational essence of psychoanalysis? And (2) does this essence or core propose a unique, liberating pedagogy as believed and practised by many radical educators of the twentieth century, like Percy Nunn (1870-1944), Homer Lane (1876-1925), Alexander S. Neill (1884-1973), and Dora Russell (1894-1986). In order to achieve some kind of -historical perspective, the Introduction looks at the intellectual roots of Freud's work and sets it against two allied phenomena - the evolutionary theory of Charles Robert Darwin (1809-1882), and the redefinition of psychology as a mental science. As a result of this perspective it becomes evident that, despite Freud's claims to total originality, most of his central concepts and conceptualisations are to be found in the writings of Darwin, Johann Friedrich Herbart (1776-1841), Gustav Theodor Fechner (1801-1887) and Ernst Wilhelm von Brücke (1819- 1892). Moreover, Freudian theory has endorsed, amplified and propagated three beliefs which were unassailable stanchions of the scientific community in the early decades of the twentieth century, and whose impact proved very for fixed important twentieth century educational theory - (1) a belief in intelligence: (2) a belief in genetic predeterminism; and (3) a belief that all behaviour is motivated by instincts or by painful stimuli. What is the educational core of psychoanalysis? The lynch-pin of Freudian theory is the belief - which Freud expressed as early as the 1890s to his friend Wilhelm Fliess (1858-1928) - that the aetiology of neurosis is always to be found in the repression of infant sexuality. The subsequent attempts of psychoanalysts to elucidate the implications of this belief involve four things: (1) a recognition of the crucial importance of the early years of childhood; (2) a recognition of the supreme importance of interpersonal relationships; (3) a theory of psychosexual development; and (4) a theory of repression. The works of the four writers I have studied reflect these four aspects of psychoanalysis, but there is an important shift of emphasis from one analyst to another and from one aspect to another. For example, although the four subscribed to the belief that the early years of childhood are the crucial determinants of the whole course of human development, there is no unanimity with regard to the specific period in question. What years are crucial? Where Freud and Anna emphasised the first few years of 1if e, Klein and her followers finally limited the period to the first few months. With interpersonal relationships, too, there is a change of emphasis. All of them believed that our relationships, past, present and future are formed from the imagos of our parents, siblings and others who cared for us during the early, critical years. But, whereas for-Treud, the father-imago was of paramount importance, the younger generation of analysts, including Anna Freud, Melanie Klein and Susan Isaacs, bestowed on the mother-child relationship an importance unparalleled in educational literature. With the change of emphasis, the father became a 'shadowy' presence, occupying a position in the family of secondary importance to the mother. Does psychoanalysis propose a liberating pedagogy? It becomes clear that the four psychoanalysts did not advocate a radical, liberating pedagogy which champions the 'free expression' of the individual at the expense of the established values of the State. On the contrary, all of them were clearly on the side of the State; that is, they envisaged their role as custodian: and procurers of public morality. In practice, this entails the removal of the debilitating neurosis, the social 'disease' which renders individuals incapable of adopting/... Vl: adopting a suitable social role and enjoying a 'normal', workable relationship with other human beings. And the 'cure' is considered adequately verified when the same individuals, formerly classified as 'neurotic', 'sick', 'maladjusted', 'crazy', 'delinquent', 'criminal', or whatever, are able at last to achieve a new, personal harmony with other human beings despite the rigorous constraints arising from living in a highly organised network of social relationships. The thesis ends with an attempt to fit Freud's social philosophy into a broader, philosophical context. It is suggested that his advocacy of a closed society superintended by wise, benign Psychoanalytic-Guardians is compatible with the totalitarian philosophy of Thomas Hill Green (1836-1882), founder of the school of British Idealism which displaced the philosophy of Jeremy Bentham ( 1748-1832) and John Stuart Mill (1806-1873) as the dominant tradition in British universities from 1870 into the twentieth century. viii PREFACE I can remember, as a young teacher, the excitement which greeted the publication in 1965 of Primary Education in Scotland or, as we to it, the Primary Memorandum Enthusiastically always referred . 1 received as a 'revolution' and the harbinger of a new era in Scottish education, it was welcomed for its unequivocal endorsement of 'more 2 progressive and experimental' teaching techniques. Although I, too, was lyrically swept along for a time on the wave of this new movement, doubts, and serious ones at that, began to trouble me. Doubts, by the way, which were never expressed openly; I was much too diffident for that in the face of such national euphoria. Nor, as far as I could tell, were doubts expressed by anyone else. What were my misgivings? To begin with, there was the apparent contradictoriness of the 'Memorandum's message. Its advocacy of a radical progressivism seemed to me to go hand-in-hand with something entirely different. And this 'something' was definitely not any 'romantic', laissez-faire philosophy which favours the practice of individualism. There are things the child 'has to be taught', we were told, 'not only in the intellectual sphere, but also in order that his emotional, moral and social development may follow a pattern which will make him 3 acceptable to the society in which he will live as an adult'.

Sohasky All Rights Reserved ABSTRACT Historians have argued that race science and eugenics retreated following their discrediting in the wake of the Second World War. Yet if race science and eugenics disappeared, how does one explain their sudden and unexpected reemergence in the form of the neohereditarian work of Arthur Jensen, Richard Herrnstein, and Charles Murray? This dissertation argues that race science and eugenics did not retreat following their discrediting. Rather, race science and eugenics adapted to changing political and social climes, at times entering into states of latency, throughout the twentieth century. The transnational history of mass intelligence testing in the twentieth century demonstrates the longevity of race science and eugenics long after their discrediting. Indeed, the tropes of race science and eugenics persist today in the modern I.Q. controversy, as the dissertation shows. By examining the history of mass intelligence testing in multiple nations, this dissertation presents narrative of the continuity of race science and eugenics throughout the twentieth century.     THE TERRIBLE TWINS – how Freud and Marx legitimised our throwaway society1 One of the difficulties facing eco-critical discourse, which is at the centre of this conference, is to make that leap – an extrapolation or Kierkegaardian necessity – from theory or literary excerpt to the field of action, that is from the passive reader, the self, the “ego”, to a sense of responsibility towards the environment, to “eco”. I propose to look at how some ideas in the thought systems of seminal thinkers like Freud and Marx were used to create in different ways, sometimes unwittingly to their originators – were they alive to peruse them – a discourse of a false self or ego, leading to the present state of individual unaccountability towards the real world, the environment, or eco. I will draw on particular expostulatory works, among the vast literature, which have been compiled in recent years on the questions which readers have interrogated and which are germane here, i.e. “Freud on Women”, edited by Elizabeth Young-Bruehl, and “Why Marx was Right” – by Terry Eagleton: both provide readings of Marx and Freud which form a background to this essay. I call Freud and Marx the terrible twins because they share broad cultural similarities and because of the huge dissemination of their works in the academy, and particularly in the wider society, where they interacted with each other, and where often problematic areas in their discourse had been simplified for rapid communication through the mass media and popular understanding. 1 This essay is based on a paper given to the Ego to Eco conference at NUI Galway in June, 2011, and has been updated to include references to scholars and academics who over the years have contributed to the questions outlined here 1 The idea of the self in Freud is entirely subjective, but supported by some empirical evidence, while in Marx the idea of the self belongs entirely to the objective, empirical discourse of scientific philosophy or epistemology.

The purpose of this study is to shed light on the experience of undergoing this therapy from the perspective of patients who benefited from it. A brief history of Reich and his theory and practice of orgonomic therapy is chronicled along with clinical and autobiographical accounts of treatment cases. Seven current or former patients who have been treated with and benefited from orgonomic therapy were interviewed using a qualitative, heuristic method yielding rich experience-near descriptions of the subjective experience, conscious and unconscious meanings, and functions/experience of orgonomic therapy. Interview data were inductively coded producing individual depictions for each research participant, a composite depiction, and six core themes of the experience: (a) entry into orgonomic therapy, (b) orgonomic therapist attributes, (c) orgonomic biopsychotherapy, (d) experience of the therapeutic process, (e) therapeutic results, (f) thoughts and feelings about orgonomic therapy. The results are consistent with Reich’s theory and practice of orgonomic therapy and provide a broader, deeper, and richer understanding of the patient experience directly from the aggregate voices of those who have experienced and benefited from it first-hand. The results also indicate that patients who are treated with and benefit from orgonomic therapy feel innately and intuitively drawn to it. Clinical implications are offered along with recommendations for future study.

    Enzo Joseph Bonaventura’s La psicoanalisi: * The importance of his thinking, history of a repression David Meghnagi** Abstract. Enzo Joseph Bonaventura (1891-1948) was one of the most authoritative figures of experimental psychology in Italy between the two World Wars. Bonaventura was also a pioneer of the Italian Psychoanalysis, to which he dedicated the exhaustive handbook titled La psicoanalisi. The aim of this paper is to review La psicoanalisi in order to reconstruct a painful historical period that has been mostly forgotten. Born in Pisa to a Jewish family, in 1913, Bonaventura graduated from Florence University with a degree in philosophy. His supervising professor, Francesco De Sarlo, hired him as an assistant in the University Laboratory of Psychology. Bonaventura was a polyhedral figure with interests spanning across many fields such as philosophy, theology, developmental psychology, psychology of motivation and education. He was also a charismatic figure in the Italian Zionist movement. Expelled from the University of Florence because of the Italian “Racial Laws”, he moved to Jerusalem where he played an important role in the development of academic psychology research in Israel. He died tragically on the 13th of April, in an ambush to the convoy of medical staff by the Hadassah.     Biography Born on 3 December 1895, Anna Freud was the youngest of Sigmund and Martha Freud's six children. She was a lively child with a reputation for mischief. Freud wrote to his friend Fliess in 1899: „Anna has become downright beautiful through naughtiness..." Anna finished her education at the Cottage Lyceum in Vienna in 1912, but had not yet decided upon a career. In 1914 she travelled alone to England to improve her English. She was there when war was declared and thus became an "enemy alien". Later that year she began teaching at her old school, the Cottage Lyceum. A photo shows her with the 5th class of the school c.1918. One of her pupils later wrote: "This young lady had far more control over us than the older 'aunties'." Already in 1910 Anna had begun reading her father's work, but her serious involvement in psychoanalysis began in 1918, when her father started psychoanalyzing her. (It was not anomalous for a father to analyze his own daughter at this time, before any orthodoxy had been established.) In 1920 they both attended the International Psychoanalytical Congress at The Hague. They now had both work and friends in common. One common friend was the writer and psychoanalyst Lou Andreas- Salomé, who was once the confidante of Nietzsche and Rilke and who was to become Anna Freud's confidante in the 1920s. Through her, the Freuds also met Rilke, whose poetry Anna Freud greatly admired. Her volume of his „Buch der Bilder" bears his dedication, commemorating their first meeting.
