UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE GROUP F, MATCHDAY 1

OLYMPIAKOS PIRAEUS FC v BAYER 04 LEVERKUSEN

A year ago, Oympiakos Piraeus FC were drawn against Manchester United FC on Matchday 1 and, this time round, have an equally attractive opening fixture against the side that eliminated the English champions and made Real Madrid CF sweat for their victory in the final. For the Greek hosts, the match signifies a debut at a new venue, where the aim will be to secure more points than they did last season and to improve their record by progressing further than the first group stage. For Bayer 04 Leverkusen, this match represents a major test during a transitional period in which Klaus Toppmöller has been re-building a side in the wake of a series of departures at the end of last season. A thrilling opening match is in prospect.

This is the sixth UEFA Champions League campaign for Olympiakos Piraeus FC and, in the previous five, they have recorded only one victory on the opening matchday. This is only the third time that Olympiakos have entertained German visitors – and they will be hoping that history doesn’t repeat itself. When they played at home against FC Bayern München and Hamburger SV at the beginning of the 1980s, they conceded four goals on each occasion. In fact, all four games – at home and away – against German opponents have ended as defeats. Ominously, on their one and only previous visit to , Bayer 04 Leverkusen also scored four goals – against Panathinaikos FC in the 1993/94 Cup Winners’ Cup. Olympiakos have won only two of their last nine UEFA Champions League matches, but they have lost one of their 16 home matches in the tournament: to Manchester United in October last year when goals from David Beckham and Andy Cole (2 minutes after coming on as a substitute for Verón) sealed victory for the visitors. Olympiakos have not managed a clean sheet in their last seven UEFA Champions League matches. Their last shut-out was a 1-0 win against Valencia in October 2000. Bayer 04 Leverkusen, last season’s losing finalists, are taking part in their fifth UEFA Champions League campaign. Their opening match record is two wins, two draws and one defeat. Despite being finalists last year, Leverkusen have actually won just four of their last 12 matches in the competition, recording five losses and three draws. In last season’s run, they managed only two clean sheets (Olympique Lyonnais and Deportivo La Coruña), and not one in their last nine games. The German side have won only three of their last 14 away games in the competition. Olympiakos supporters are going to be a force to be reckoned with home and away during this campaign. For the return leg of this match, the club has already received 1,500 tickets and will receive an additional 5,000 because many Greek expatriates have expressed interest in the match. The away leg to Maccabi Haifa could feel more like a home tie for Olympiakos. With Maccabi playing their home games in , Olympiakos is expecting more than 10,000 fans to turn up. The Greek side has many fan clubs in Cyprus, and both Cypriots and Greeks living there are likely to come to the match. This could be Olympiakos’ biggest away

The fans will be hoping for better than a 1-3 defeat this time though. Olympiakos coach sees both league and UEFA Champions League games as important, but had this to say specifically about Leverkusen: “It might be that they do not have a dream start under their belt, but let’s not forget that this past May they were playing in a Champions League final. It is a very serious team that plays hard. There have been some changes at the club since last year, after Zé Roberto’s and Ballack’s departures, but the team is not in crisis at all. I was not surprised by their performance against Hansa because I was expecting them to play well.” On Saturday, Olympiakos drew 2-2 with Iraklis, leaving them with seven points from three games. This puts them third in the Greek league on goal difference behind Iraklis and AEK Athens. Lemonis fielded: Eleftheropolous, Patsatzoglou (Giovanni 59), Venetidis, Giannakopoulos, Djordjevic, Karebaue, Zetterberg (Amanatidis 73), Atzas, Zé Elias, Anatolakis, Choutos (Alexandris 58). Giannakopoulos (39) and Giovanni (82) were the two goalscorers. Iraklis stole the points in the third minute of injury time, having opened the scoring in the third minute of the match. Olympiakos could have wrapped it up at 89 minutes when Alexandris missed a good scoring opportunity. Lemonis was philosophical: “I am satisfied with the performance of my players, but not with the final result. We had a good start and a bad finish. We need more training in how to convert the chances into goals. We missed a lot of good chances.” Giannakopoulos was more forthright: “The final result is unfair. We deserved to win.” Eleftheropoulos was looking forward: “Both teams played very well. We lost two points in that last second. We must forget this match as soon as possible and focus on the forthcoming game against Leverkusen.” Labros Choutros was injured during the game and is doubtful for the match against the German visitors. During the practice game before the Iraklis match, Lemonis used a 4-4-2 formation with Karembeu and Giovanni-Choutos as the attacking duo. In the second half he switched to 4- 5-1, taking Karembeu off and leaving Choutos as the lone striker. Bayer 04 Leverkusen were beaten 1-3 on Saturday at home by newly promoted . They were Hannover’s first points of the season. The Leverkusen team was (4-1-3-2): Butt, Balitisch (Bierofka 58), Lucio, Juan (Ojigwe 26), Zivkovic, Ramelow, Schneider, Bastürk, Simak, Kirsten ( 73), Neuville. Bastürk scored the opener after 11 minutes, before Hannover fought back with two goals from new signing . Klaus Toppmöller, who last week had his contract extended to 2005, said that Hannover 96 were the fresher team and they would have to sit down and talk things over before the UEFA Champions League match. Bayer won for the first time this season last midweek, with a 1-3 victory at FC Hansa . Bayer have injury problems to overcome. Captain is a long-term injury problem, with a comeback not expected until the New Year. He was injured in last season’s UEFA Champions League semi-final clash with Manchester United. Zoltan Sebescen and new signing Christoph Preuss are also injured. Before the Hannover game, Placente and Berbatov withdrew with muscle strains, and Brdaric was another late withdrawal. Bayer lost two star players to title rivals FC Bayern München. and Brazilian Zé Roberto’s departures have been offset with the arrivals of several new players. From Brazil, França (formerly with FC Sao Paulo) and Juan (Flamengo CF). Daniel Bierofka joined from TSV 1860 München, and Jan Simak, the Czech international, came from

Matchday One Athens 18 September 2002 OLYMPIAKOS PIRAEUS FC – BAYER 04 LEVERKUSEN Hannover. Two German Under-21 internationals – Christian Preuss () and Hanno Balitsch (1. FC Köln) have also signed. Last week, Olympiakos revealed their new 2002/03 season kits. The kit displays three stars – a reflection of the 30 Championships the club has won. Christian Karembeu stated: “I hope these new uniforms will bring us luck, and that we will win our seventh consecutive championship, while at the same time having a good Champions League run.” On Friday, the Board of the Hellenic Football League, EPEA, decided at an emergency session to proceed with a lock-out starting as of the fifth round of the current season, at the end of September. This followed the Greek government’s decision to reject requests for financial aid following the closure of Alpha Digital Synthesis, one of the two Greek national digital TV subscriber networks. Eight first division teams including Olympiakos and AEK Athens, and more from the lower leagues, had signed contracts with the company, and will now lose the revenue. The owners of the Greek clubs want the state-run pools (OPAP), to give them money in return for placing Greek teams on the soccer pools – football is currently barred from fixed betting in Greece. The Board’s decision has to be ratified by the General Assembly of EPEA. Two Olympiakos players took part in the national side’s 0-2 defeat to Spain in the EURO 2004™ qualifying matches. Both Christos Patsatzoglou and Stylianos Giannakopoulos played all 90 minutes. Bayer 04 Leverkusen had several players on international duty. Schneider and Ramelow both started against Lithuania in the 0-2 German victory, although Schneider was brought off with nine minutes remaining. replaced after 61 minutes. Boris Zivkovic played in Croatia’s 0-0 draw with Estonia. Leverkusen’s Anel Dzaka’s 22nd birthday is on Thursday. After a very tough match against Iraklis, Olympiakos’ Swedish Pär Zetterberg admitted: “I have never been fouled that many times during one game in my career.” He was not the only one to suffer in a physical game. Centre-forward Lambros Choutos suffered a partial tear of his knee ligaments, which will keep him out for three weeks. This is a big blow for coach Takis Lemonis, who had just adapted Choutos into his 4-5-1 system as the lone centre-forward. Goalkeeper Dimitrios Eleftheropoulos also suffered a knock to his leg when hitting a goalpost, but finished the game and should be fit for this game. On the happier side, Olympiakos welcomed back Christian Karembeu after a one month injury lay-off. The Frenchman had partially torn a muscle fibre in his leg after the friendly match against Galatasaray SK in Istanbul. Olympiakos are playing at the Rizoupolis Stadium, which is actually Apollon Amateur FC home ground, as the Olympic Stadium is under reconstruction. Rizoupolis was choosen by Olympiakos and they have invested heavily in the stadium in order to bring everything up to the standards required by the UEFA Champions League. Rizoupolis looks like a new stadium with brand new floodlights, pitch, dressing rooms, roof on the main stand, seats and media areas. It is small, though, compared to the Olympic Stadium, as the capacity only is 14,100. Athens welcomed their first UEFA Champions League visitors of the 2002/03 season – Bayer 04 Leverkusen – with hot weather and heavy traffic on Monday. There is no change expected for match night either, as the forecast predicts 27-35 degrees, though partly cloudy weather. Rain showers might surprise late in the evening, as has been the case in previous weeks. Both teams will held their official pre-match Press Conferences on Tuesday. Bayer 04 will introduce Klaus Toppmöller and a player to the media in the Intercontinental Hotel at 13.00

Matchday One Athens 18 September 2002 OLYMPIAKOS PIRAEUS FC – BAYER 04 LEVERKUSEN and the Olympiakos Press Conference will take place at the Rizoupolis Stadium at 16.45. Both teams will also train on Tuesday evening. Home team training starts at 17.30 and Bayer 04 will step on the pitch 90 minutes later. Bayer 04 took 18 players to Athens, among those left home was striking legend and six injured players: Placente, Berbatov, Nowotny, Sebescen, Preuss and the latest victim Juan, who suffered a muscle injury at the weekend. This season’s UEFA Champions League sets a new record by featuring players from 70 different countries, making it a genuine showcase for top talent from all over the world. Last season, players from 51 different countries took part in the competition. As usual, some new publications should be available at all venues on Matchday 1 even though it’s been a rush to print and distribute on time. The UEFA Champions League Statistics Handbook includes the usual information about the 32 clubs, the 32 coaches, the referees, about 800 players and the history of the competition. An expanded and updated version of the All-Time Players’ Appearances handbook is also available. It provides a 130-page record of the 2,485 footballers who contributed to the match action during the first ten years of the UEFA Champions League. The handbook is enclosed with the first issue of the official UEFA Champions League Magazine which includes squad-lists, background information, interviews and features. There’s an old saying that if you start to read something you’ve written, the first thing you’ll spot is a mistake. Unfortunately, it’s true this time round because – nobody can explain why – Manchester United FC’s UEFA Champions League record is pure fiction. If you would like to pencil in the correct version, it reads like this: UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE RECORD Participations P W D L F A Home - 39 24 9 6 86 35 Away - 39 13 15 11 51 40 Neutral - 1 1 0 0 2 1 Overall 7 79 38 24 17 139 76

The financial conditions for the 2002/03 UEFA Champions League campaign remain essentially unchanged in relation to last season. The gross amount in the pool will be at least 1,055 million Swiss francs with 809 million earmarked for the clubs (including 41 million for the professional leagues of the participating associations). Each of the 32 participants will receive a starting fee of 2.5 million Swiss francs plus an appearance fee of 500,000 per match. In addition, there are performance bonuses of 500,000 francs for a win and 250,000 for a draw. In other words, a team winning all six matches in the first group stage would be guaranteed 8.5 million francs – plus the gate receipts from all home games. In the second group stage, the appearance fee and the performance bonuses are the same. The eight quarter-finalists receive 4 million francs apiece; the four semi-finalists earn 5 million each; the beaten finalist receives 6 million and the winner of the UEFA Champions League receives 10 million. One Swiss franc is approximately 0.68 euros. Clubs can also earn additional income from the so-called Market Pool, based on the proportional values of different TV markets and the number of clubs competing from any specific country. This is a complex calculation and precise figures are not usually available until the end of the season. In this phase of the competition, teams’ results against each other have a special relevance, bearing in mind the criteria used to decide the final group positions if two or more teams are tied on the same number of points:

Having said that, UEFA likes to adopt as flexible a position as possible. But, in cases of controversy or lack of agreement between the two clubs on the re-scheduling of the game, UEFA takes the final decision.

Update

Bayer 04 Leverkusen were represented by head coach Klaus Toppmöller at their pre-match Press Conference and he started by praising his opponents: “Olympiakos are a very good team. They have several national team players. Especially strong is their central midfield with top class performers like Karembeu, Zetterberg and Zé Elias. We cannot forget the attacking skills the Greek club has in Giovanni or Alexandris either. “Alexandris has scored a lot of goals each season and has a similar legendary role in the club as Ulf Kirsten has in ours. Olympiakos improve their firepower with Predrag Djordjevic and the skills of the team to switch from defence to attack are excellent. They like to use different tactical schemes as well and even switch during a match.” “We cannot underestimate Olympiakos as an opponent. It is their seventh season in the UEFA Champions League and this certainly is no coincidence – on the contrary, it shows the class of the team. Obviously the aim of both teams is not only to participate in the Champions League, but to qualify to the second group stage, so the games between these two teams will be very tough and competitive. They could even be the decisive ones in order to determine the qualification.” “We have great respect towards Olympiakos, but we are certainly not afraid of the Greeks. We have to think more about our own game, despite we have several players missing through injuries. We have seen video-tapes of Olympiakos games, but it is clear that the Champions League is a totally different matter from domestic league games.” Bayer 04 have taken two teams to Athens, as the clubs agreed to play an Under-21 game on Tuesday at the Abelakion Salaminas Stadium. Bayer 04 won 4-1. For the senior game, Toppmöller has selected 18 players, out which the provisional starting line-up should be: Butt (Juric); Balitsch, Kleine, Lucio, Zivkovic; Schneider, Ramelow, Vranjes, Babic, Bastürk; Neuville (Brdaric). Five other players at Toppmöller’s disposal are Simak, Bierofka, Ojigwe, Dzaka and França. Olympiakos FC started their Press Conference with head coach Takis Lemonis, who surprised the media by announcing a further problem: “Djordjevic will not train with us today, he has a temperature and was left in the hotel. I would not like to judge the options for tomorrow, we will see in the morning, how he is feeling.” “Obviously we will not use the injury and illness of Choutos and Djordjevic as an excuse for possible failure. We need to play our own game with a good tactical scheme and passion to make a good start in the Champions League.” Asked about the speculations that Olympiakos and Bayer 04 matches will be very important to determine the second qualifier from Group F, presuming Manchester United will win it, Lemonis replied: “I disagree – all six games are very important. Qualification for the second stage is wide open at the moment and will stay this way for a while, so we have to go for a win in all games.” Asked about the new ‘home’, Lemonis was happy about it. “Rizoupolis will hold fewer supporters than the Olympic Stadium, but here the advantage is they are very close to the players and my players are very happy to play like this. The number of supporters will be less, but I am quite sure the passion will be the same. It might be considered as an disadvantage that we have only played one match here before the Bayer game, but don’t forget that Bayer have not played at this stadium at all.” Lemonis was joined at the Press Conference by Christian Karembeu, who even offered to take over the translator’s duties, as the latter was stuck in Athens traffic. Speaking fluently several languages, Karembeu however used English and thanked Klaus Toppmöller for the compliments earlier in the day: “But this is a team event and it does not matter that much

A good start is very important for us and three points are the good start we are thinking about. I would like to rely on our supporters to get us into the rhythm of the game.” Lemonis did not reveal his possible line-up for Wednesday, but it could look be: Eleftheropoulos; Patsatzoglou, Anatolakis, Antzas, Venetidis; Giannakopoulos, Karembeu, Zetterberg, Zé Elias; Giovanni, Alexandris.
