Matchday One Athens 18 September 2002 OLYMPIAKOS PIRAEUS FC – BAYER 04 LEVERKUSEN APOLLON RIZOPOULOS STADIUM, ATHENS WEDNESDAY 18 SEPTEMBER 2002 at 21.45 UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE GROUP F, MATCHDAY 1 OLYMPIAKOS PIRAEUS FC v BAYER 04 LEVERKUSEN A year ago, Oympiakos Piraeus FC were drawn against Manchester United FC on Matchday 1 and, this time round, have an equally attractive opening fixture against the side that eliminated the English champions and made Real Madrid CF sweat for their victory in the Glasgow final. For the Greek hosts, the match signifies a debut at a new venue, where the aim will be to secure more points than they did last season and to improve their record by progressing further than the first group stage. For Bayer 04 Leverkusen, this match represents a major test during a transitional period in which Klaus Toppmöller has been re-building a side in the wake of a series of departures at the end of last season. A thrilling opening match is in prospect. This is the sixth UEFA Champions League campaign for Olympiakos Piraeus FC and, in the previous five, they have recorded only one victory on the opening matchday. This is only the third time that Olympiakos have entertained German visitors – and they will be hoping that history doesn’t repeat itself. When they played at home against FC Bayern München and Hamburger SV at the beginning of the 1980s, they conceded four goals on each occasion. In fact, all four games – at home and away – against German opponents have ended as defeats. Ominously, on their one and only previous visit to Greece, Bayer 04 Leverkusen also scored four goals – against Panathinaikos FC in the 1993/94 Cup Winners’ Cup. Olympiakos have won only two of their last nine UEFA Champions League matches, but they have lost one of their 16 home matches in the tournament: to Manchester United in October last year when goals from David Beckham and Andy Cole (2 minutes after coming on as a substitute for Verón) sealed victory for the visitors. Olympiakos have not managed a clean sheet in their last seven UEFA Champions League matches. Their last shut-out was a 1-0 win against Valencia in October 2000. Bayer 04 Leverkusen, last season’s losing finalists, are taking part in their fifth UEFA Champions League campaign. Their opening match record is two wins, two draws and one defeat. Despite being finalists last year, Leverkusen have actually won just four of their last 12 matches in the competition, recording five losses and three draws. In last season’s run, they managed only two clean sheets (Olympique Lyonnais and Deportivo La Coruña), and not one in their last nine games. The German side have won only three of their last 14 away games in the competition. Olympiakos supporters are going to be a force to be reckoned with home and away during this campaign. For the return leg of this match, the club has already received 1,500 tickets and will receive an additional 5,000 because many Greek expatriates have expressed interest in the match. The away leg to Maccabi Haifa could feel more like a home tie for Olympiakos. With Maccabi playing their home games in Cyprus, Olympiakos is expecting more than 10,000 fans to turn up. The Greek side has many fan clubs in Cyprus, and both Cypriots and Greeks living there are likely to come to the match. This could be Olympiakos’ biggest away UEFA Press Information Matchday One Athens 18 September 2002 OLYMPIAKOS PIRAEUS FC – BAYER 04 LEVERKUSEN support yet, eclipsing the 9,000 fans who cheered them on at the Stadio Delle Alpi against Juventus in 1999. The fans will be hoping for better than a 1-3 defeat this time though. Olympiakos coach Takis Lemonis sees both league and UEFA Champions League games as important, but had this to say specifically about Leverkusen: “It might be that they do not have a dream start under their belt, but let’s not forget that this past May they were playing in a Champions League final. It is a very serious team that plays hard. There have been some changes at the club since last year, after Zé Roberto’s and Ballack’s departures, but the team is not in crisis at all. I was not surprised by their performance against Hansa because I was expecting them to play well.” On Saturday, Olympiakos drew 2-2 with Iraklis, leaving them with seven points from three games. This puts them third in the Greek league on goal difference behind Iraklis and AEK Athens. Lemonis fielded: Eleftheropolous, Patsatzoglou (Giovanni 59), Venetidis, Giannakopoulos, Djordjevic, Karebaue, Zetterberg (Amanatidis 73), Atzas, Zé Elias, Anatolakis, Choutos (Alexandris 58). Giannakopoulos (39) and Giovanni (82) were the two goalscorers. Iraklis stole the points in the third minute of injury time, having opened the scoring in the third minute of the match. Olympiakos could have wrapped it up at 89 minutes when Alexandris missed a good scoring opportunity. Lemonis was philosophical: “I am satisfied with the performance of my players, but not with the final result. We had a good start and a bad finish. We need more training in how to convert the chances into goals. We missed a lot of good chances.” Giannakopoulos was more forthright: “The final result is unfair. We deserved to win.” Eleftheropoulos was looking forward: “Both teams played very well. We lost two points in that last second. We must forget this match as soon as possible and focus on the forthcoming game against Leverkusen.” Labros Choutros was injured during the game and is doubtful for the match against the German visitors. During the practice game before the Iraklis match, Lemonis used a 4-4-2 formation with Karembeu and Giovanni-Choutos as the attacking duo. In the second half he switched to 4- 5-1, taking Karembeu off and leaving Choutos as the lone striker. Bayer 04 Leverkusen were beaten 1-3 on Saturday at home by newly promoted Hannover 96. They were Hannover’s first points of the season. The Leverkusen team was (4-1-3-2): Butt, Balitisch (Bierofka 58), Lucio, Juan (Ojigwe 26), Zivkovic, Ramelow, Schneider, Bastürk, Simak, Kirsten (França 73), Neuville. Bastürk scored the opener after 11 minutes, before Hannover fought back with two goals from new signing Fredi Bobic. Klaus Toppmöller, who last week had his contract extended to 2005, said that Hannover 96 were the fresher team and they would have to sit down and talk things over before the UEFA Champions League match. Bayer won for the first time this season last midweek, with a 1-3 victory at FC Hansa Rostock. Bayer have injury problems to overcome. Captain Jens Nowotny is a long-term injury problem, with a comeback not expected until the New Year. He was injured in last season’s UEFA Champions League semi-final clash with Manchester United. Zoltan Sebescen and new signing Christoph Preuss are also injured. Before the Hannover game, Placente and Berbatov withdrew with muscle strains, and Brdaric was another late withdrawal. Bayer lost two star players to title rivals FC Bayern München. Michael Ballack and Brazilian Zé Roberto’s departures have been offset with the arrivals of several new players. From Brazil, França (formerly with FC Sao Paulo) and Juan (Flamengo CF). Daniel Bierofka joined from TSV 1860 München, and Jan Simak, the Czech international, came from UEFA Press Information Matchday One Athens 18 September 2002 OLYMPIAKOS PIRAEUS FC – BAYER 04 LEVERKUSEN Hannover. Two German Under-21 internationals – Christian Preuss (Eintracht Frankfurt) and Hanno Balitsch (1. FC Köln) have also signed. Last week, Olympiakos revealed their new 2002/03 season kits. The kit displays three stars – a reflection of the 30 Championships the club has won. Christian Karembeu stated: “I hope these new uniforms will bring us luck, and that we will win our seventh consecutive championship, while at the same time having a good Champions League run.” On Friday, the Board of the Hellenic Football League, EPEA, decided at an emergency session to proceed with a lock-out starting as of the fifth round of the current season, at the end of September. This followed the Greek government’s decision to reject requests for financial aid following the closure of Alpha Digital Synthesis, one of the two Greek national digital TV subscriber networks. Eight first division teams including Olympiakos and AEK Athens, and more from the lower leagues, had signed contracts with the company, and will now lose the revenue. The owners of the Greek clubs want the state-run pools (OPAP), to give them money in return for placing Greek teams on the soccer pools – football is currently barred from fixed betting in Greece. The Board’s decision has to be ratified by the General Assembly of EPEA. Two Olympiakos players took part in the national side’s 0-2 defeat to Spain in the EURO 2004™ qualifying matches. Both Christos Patsatzoglou and Stylianos Giannakopoulos played all 90 minutes. Bayer 04 Leverkusen had several players on international duty. Schneider and Ramelow both started against Lithuania in the 0-2 German victory, although Schneider was brought off with nine minutes remaining. Oliver Neuville replaced Carsten Jancker after 61 minutes. Boris Zivkovic played in Croatia’s 0-0 draw with Estonia. Leverkusen’s Anel Dzaka’s 22nd birthday is on Thursday. After a very tough match against Iraklis, Olympiakos’ Swedish midfielder Pär Zetterberg admitted: “I have never been fouled that many times during one game in my career.” He was not the only one to suffer in a physical game.
