(Spring, 1968) © World Wisdom, Inc. www.studiesincomparativereligion.com THE main chapel of Toledo Cathedral has one curious feature which is sometimes allowed to pass unnoticed, though it must surely be unique among Christian churches. Amid the effigies of saints, holy bishops, abbots, and Christian monarchs—defenders of the faith—there stands a fine polychrome statue of an Islamic doctor of theology. This cathedral was not begun until the early thirteenth century; but the memory of the saintly Mussulman was still held in such regard at Toledo a century and a half after the reconquest of the city from the Arabs, that his image was set up in one of the two most prominent positions of honour. These two conspicuous sites are the two pillars which, with the two others beside the twin pulpits, sustain the vault of the main chapel. The one on the Gospel side has a statue of the mysterious Shepherd of Las Navas—thought by some to have been an apparition of St. Isidore the Farm-Hand, Patron of Madrid—who showed King Alfonso the Good the secret mountain pass that enabled the Christian army to win the decisive victory of the Reconquest at Navas de Tolosa in 1212, and who vanished after showing the path to the leaders; the statue is said to have been made from a rough sketch drawn by the king himself. And in the corresponding position on the Epistle-side pillar stands the Moslem who won the great victory of renunciation and peace. -
Jewish Averroists Between Two Expulsions (1306-1492): from Conflict to Reconciliation
JEWISH AVERROISTS BETWEEN TWO EXPULSIONS (1306-1492): FROM CONFLICT TO RECONCILIATION Basem Mahmud Freie Universität Berlin ABSTRACT This article investigates the intellectual production of Jewish authors influenced by Averroes in the 14th and 15th Centuries in northern Spain and southern France. The primary objective is to determine the main features of Jewish Averroism in this period, and to understand it within its socio-historical context. The outcomes suggest that there was a relationship between the new social and political trends toward democratization and reconciliation in the heart of Jewish communities on one hand, and the growing interest in Averroes’ original works on the other. Original here means the works that are not commentaries or summaries of other works. Key words: Aristotelianism, Averroes, Averroism, Jewish philosophy, Kabbalah, Maimonides, Scripture. INTRODUCTION «There is nothing worse in social government than a policy that makes one single society into several, just as there is no greater good in communities than a policy that joins and unifies» (Averroes)1 The 14th Century was a very difficult time for Jewish communities in northern Spain and southern France, they faced great threats from outside as well as significant domestic division. The domestic conflict emerged not only because of religious and philosophical issues, but also due to economic and social matters related to the distribution of wealth and power within Jewish communities.2 In addition, these communities lived in delicate conditions due to threats from the Christians. This situation also had an effect on demographics. Since the last years of 13th Century, the Jewish community started to encounter sizeable obstacles in its demographic development.3 Under these conditions, Hebraic Averroism continued its development which had begun in XIII century. -

1492 RECONSIDERED: RELIGIOUS AND SOCIAL CHANGE IN FIFTEENTH CENTURY ÁVILA by Carolyn Salomons A dissertation submitted to Johns Hopkins University in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Baltimore, Maryland May 2014 © 2014 Carolyn Salomons All Rights Reserved Abstract This dissertation is an assessment of the impact of the expulsion of the Jews from Spain in 1492 on the city of Ávila, in northwestern Castile. The expulsion was the culmination of a series of policies set forth by Isabel I of Castile and Ferdinand II of Aragon regarding Jewish-Christian relations. The monarchs invoked these policies in order to bolster the faith and religious praxis of Catholics in the kingdoms, especially those Catholics newly converted from Judaism. My work shows how the implementation of these strategies began to fracture the heretofore relatively convivial relations between the confessional groups residing in Ávila. A key component of the Crown’s policies was the creation of a Jewish quarter in the city, where previously, Jews had lived wherever they chose. This transformation of a previously shared civic place to one demarcated clearly by religious affiliation, i.e. the creation of both Jewish and Christian space, had a visceral impact on how Christians related to their former neighbors, and hostilities between the two communities increased in the closing decades of the fifteenth century. Yet at the same time, Jewish appeals to the Crown for assistance in the face of harassment and persecution were almost always answered positively, with the Crown intervening several times on behalf of their Jewish subjects. This seemingly incongruous attitude reveals a key component in the relationship between the Crown and Jews: the “royal alliance.” My work also details how invoking that alliance came at the expense of the horizontal alliances between Abulense Jews and Christians, and only fostered antagonism between the confessional groups. -

Jewish Law and Litigation in the Secular Courts of the Late Medieval Mediterranean Rena N. Lauer* Abstract Although medieval rabbinic law generally forbade Jews from suing their co-religionists in state courts, this practice was widely accepted among some Mediterranean Jewish com- munities. This study focuses on one such community, the Jews of Venetian Crete’s capital city of Candia, during the century following the Black Death (ca. 1350-1450). Court records indicate that Candiote Jews quite often sued each other in Venice’s coloni- al courts. Unlike many other medieval Jewish communities, the rabbinical leadership of Candia took this intra-Jewish litigation as a given. Moreover, these leaders themselves ac- cessed Venetian justice to sue fellow Jews. Among the factors that motivated Jewish use of the Venetian court was a special accommodation given to Cretan Jews: when litigation in the colonial court dealt with Jews’ marriages or divorces, judges were obligated to ad- judicate according to Jewish law. Many Candiote Jews utilized this personal law privilege, and the Venetian court actively implemented it. The Catholic judges of the colonial court in Crete learned about Jewish law mostly from the litigants themselves, and not from a panel of rabbinic experts, giving these Jewish litigants significant agency in shaping not only the outcome of their marriage and divorce cases but also the government’s under- standing of Jewish law. * * * Normative rabbinic consensus in medieval Europe squarely forbade Jews from suing each other in secular or so-called “gentile” courts. Box 38772, Abu Dhabi, UAE Abstract The aim of this paper is to highlight the contribution made by S. Hillellson, a German of Jewish origin who studied at Oxford and became a British subject in 1908. He joined the Sudan Civil Service (SCS) from 1911 to 1933, serving in the Education Department, the Intelligence Department and the Civil Secretary’s Office. It was suggested that the (SCS) famously known as the Sudan Political Service (SPS) was second only to the acclaimed Indian Civil Service (ICS) during the British Colonial time. The Service has been almost a closed British club with a noticeable chauvinism and Prejudice against non British Subjects. The paper gives a brief history of Jewish presence in the Sudan and the origin of the (SPS) as a background to the study. The Paper attempts to examine this thesis, looking into his relationship with British, non British and Sudanese colleagues and students. The paper also attempts to look into his life in the Sudan and after he left the country. A survey of his writings about Sudan is given. Based on the investigation made, the paper found no evidence to suggest that he was treated differently by his British colleagues on the basis of his race or religion. Three Faiths, One Holy Land An Interfaith Study on Holy Land Pilgrimages in the Early Modern Period Crystal Kolden The Holy Land, encompassing the city of Jerusalem and its surrounding religious sites, has long been a destination for pilgrims from all three major monotheistic religions, some of the earliest dating back to the fourth century. Following the Ottoman conquest in 1517, the region experienced a pax Ottomanica1 during the 16th and 17th centuries, and the Holy Land saw a great influx of pilgrims. With this tradition of pilgrimage came a vast convergence of ideas and views originating from diverse geographical regions and religious backgrounds. This study examines the travel accounts of four pilgrims of Christian, Muslim, and Jewish faiths to begin unraveling this complex intersection, as well as explore the ways in which these differing faiths and places of origin influence perceptions of the same geographical region. The first pilgrim is David Reubeni, a Jew claiming to be from the Jewish kingdom of Habor in central Arabia. He visited Jerusalem and surrounding holy sites in 1523. Henry Timberlake, a Protestant Christian merchant, then traveled to Jerusalem in 1601. The third pilgrim, Evliya Tshelebi, was a Muslim travel-writer from Istanbul who visited Syria and Palestine in 1648-1650 and again in 1672. Lastly is Henry Maundrell, a Church of England clergyman stationed at the Levant Company’s consulate in Aleppo, Syria, who journeyed to Jerusalem in 1697. 1 Rhoads Murphey, "Bigots or Informed Observers? Joseph Penso de Vega was one of the literary stars of the Sephardic community of Amsterdam in the second half of the seventeenth century, but astonishingly little is known about his early life. There is indeed a standard account, accord- ing to which he was born in Espejo near Cordoba in 1650. His father Isaac, the story continues, was imprisoned by the Inquisition as a Judaizer and swore that he would openly profess Judaism if he managed to escape. He did escape and fled with his family to the Netherlands, passing through Antwerp and Middel- burg where he fulfilled his vow. Joseph was educated in Amsterdam, where his masters included Isaac Aboab de Fonseca and Moseh Raphael de Aguilar who made of him a brilliant man of letters. According to Fernando José Pancorbo in Joseph Penso deVega. La creación de un perfil cultural y literario entre Amsterdam y Livorno, by far the most exhaus- tive study of Joseph Penso de Vega to have appeared so far, this information about Joseph’s birth, background, and upbringing must be regarded as “a collec- tion of loose ideas and vague theories” which are mainly incorrect and find no confirmation in any archive. Pancorbo’s exhaustive research leads to very differ- ent conclusions. Of Portuguese origin, Penso de Vega’s family seems to have left Spain before 1650—there is no record of Isaac’s imprisonment in the relevant archives of the Holy Office—and made for Antwerp, Middelburg, and Ham- burg. -
