European Red List of Habitats - Forests Habitat Group G3.7 Mediterranean lowland to submontane Pinus woodland Summary This habitat includes forests of Pinus halepensis, P. brutia, P. pinaster and P. pinea distributed on infertile soils mainly within the Mediterranean biogeographic region where they have played a fundamental role in shaping the traditional landscapes. They occur at a variety of altitudes on different substrates, the associated floras varying accordingly. Uncontrolled fire, often related to land abandonment and development processes, is a threat and grazing afterwards can influence regeneration. Integrated landscape management is essential to retain this habitat within the often complex contexts in which it occurs. Synthesis The habitat type qualifies as Least Concern (LC) because it has an extensive distribution (total estimated area, EOO and AOO) across the Mediterranean and a small part also to the Continental biogeographical zones, the reduction in quantity over the past 50 years has been very small (ca 2%) and in most areas the habitat has been stable (regarding its spatial extent). The decline in quality (abiotic and/or biotic) is slight to moderate (average severity 44%) affecting 5% of the extent of the habitat throughout its distribution over the past 50 years. To help determine the most appropriate tree species for various urban forest functions, a database of 1,585 tree species (see Appendix A) was developed by the USDA Forest Service in cooperation with Horticopia, Inc (2007). Information from this database can be used to select tree species that provide desired functional benefits. This information, in conjunction with local knowledge on species and site characteristics, can be used to select tree species that increase urban forest benefits, but also provide for long-tree life with minimal maintenance. Purpose of Species Selection Program The purpose of the species selection program is to provide a relative rating of each tree species at maturity for the following tree functions, based on a user’s input of the importance of each function (0-10 scale): • Air pollution removal • Air temperature reduction • Ultraviolet radiation reduction • Carbon storage • Pollen allergenicity • Building energy conservation • Wind reduction • Stream flow reduction This program is designed to aid users in selecting proper species given the tree functions they desire. Methods Tree Information Information about the plant dimensions, and physical leaf characteristics (e.g., leaf size, type, and shape) of 5,380 trees, shrubs, cactus and palms were derived from the Horticopia database (www.horticopia.com). -

It gives me great pleasure and honour to write the foreword to this very important and eagerly awaited piece of work, The Plants of Jordan: an annotated checklist. The Royal Botanic Garden at Tal Al-Rumman in Jordan was specifically founded to conserve Jordan’s native plants, and showcase them to the public in such a way that they would be revered and respected. However, it quickly became apparent that a large proportion of the information needed to develop the Garden was quite fragmented and insufficient or missing entirely. Thus, as a first step in achieving the overarching goal of RBG, it was imperative that RBG gathers all available data in order to begin the documentation process that would facilitate the identification and prioritization of propagation of the plants needed to establish the Garden. This process was quite painstakingly slow, as the data was dispersed across the globe and some of which was held in old archival herbarium specimens. Thus, the information had to be repatriated, cross referenced and analysed before making it final. -

Μorphological traits and molecular markers (RAPD) were used to identify and distinguish these Arbutus species to facilitate their exploitation. Since there are no descriptors established for Arbutus spp., 23 qualitative morphological characteristics of crown, foliage, bark, flowering, fruiting, and four quantitative morphological characteristics of leaf and fruit were selected and used to define differences and similarities between sampled individuals of A. andrachne, A. unedo and individuals with intermediate characteristics sampled as A. × andrachnoides . Twenty eight individuals representative of three Arbutus taxa were sampled in two typical macchia forest areas of the prefecture of Attica, Greece. Cluster analysis based on morphological characteristics separated the individuals in three distinct groups, and this was confirmed by molecular analysis. Τhe intermediate form was indicated as A. × andrachnoides , a natural hybrid of A. andrachne and A. unedo. Fifteen 10-mer oligonucleotide arbitrary primers used to amplify genomic DNA generated 166 reproducible polymorphic fragments, which revealed that A.
