Podocarpus macrophyllus ........... 9 Page 2 DECIDUOUS TREES: SMALL - up to 20’ height Common Name Height & Spread Relative Rate Comments: Botanical Name of Mature Tree of Growth Japanese Maple 20’ Tall Slow Most airy and delicate of all maples. Young spring growth is glowing red; Acer palmatum 20’ Wide summer leaves are soft green, fall foliage is scarlet, orange or yellow. Resistant to oak root fungus. Requires full sun or partial shade according to variety chosen. Needs moderate to regular watering. Many varieties available for red foliage and dissected leaves. Western Redbud 10 - 18’ Tall Moderate Likes full sun or light shade, moderate to regular water. Western redbud Cercis occidentalis 10 - 18’ Wide produces several trunks from its base, has magenta flowers that bloom from spring through summer. Resistant to oak root fungus. Drought tolerant. Tolerates clay soils with pH of 5.5 to 8 being safe. Great for bird and butterfly gardens. Flower and fruit are edible. Mexican Redbud 15’ Tall Moderate Most widely distributed is a single trunk form. Leathery blue-green leaves and Cercis canadensis ‘Mexicana’ or 15’ Wide pinkish purple flowers. Very hardy (tolerates heat and frost). Drought resistant. Cercis mexicana Stays small in the landscape. Chinese Fringe 20’ Tall Moderate Has female & male trees. Both bear flowers, but only females bear fruit. Pure Chionanthus retusus 15’ - 20’ Wide white blossoms born in lacey clusters in late spring. Flowers/fringe last about 3 weeks in spring before dropping, but not real messy. Handsome gray-brown bark provides winter interest. Good patio tree. Crape Myrtle 6 - 15’ Tall Slow to Likes full sun, moderate water, has bright pink flowers with red fall color. Can Lagerstroemia indica ‘Seminole’ or 6 - 10’ Wide Moderate be grown as a tree or shrub with multiple trunks. Has non-invasive roots; ‘Cherokee’ tolerates clay, loam, sand, slightly alkaline or acidic, well drained soils. Lagerstroemia indica ‘Peppermint Lace’ 6 - 7’ Tall Slow Same as above, only deep pink flowers with white edge. 6 - 7’ Wide Magnolia 20’ Tall Fast Broadly conical tree. Medium green leaves to 8 inches long. Abundant bright Galaxy 25’ Wide red-purple slightly fragrant goblet shaped blossoms to 5 in. across.
