(Strawberry tree) belongs to Ericaceae family, is an evergreen shrub or tree, mostly known around Mediterranean region in natural habitat, has valuable medicinal and aromatic properties. The plant is mainly used for its edible fruits. In addition, A. unedo have increasing importance in afforestration programmes, beekeeping facilities, ornamental purposes and elucidating plant physiology. Therefore, the species is seemingly a promising fruit plant. Orchards are very limited but increasing demand to the plant will result in initiations of establishment new fruit orchards with superior genotypes viz. tolerant to the abiotic stress, resistant to pests and diseases, rich contents in terms of valuable compounds, convenience to postharvest operations, being visually preferable and suitable to target climate. Plant breeding is an important component to overcome elimination of unwanted features and to reach admirable characters. The main steps in breeding are effective selection, succesfully adaptation and inheritance via transferring the features to subsequent generations.

  • Patterns in Ericaceae: New Phylogenetic Analyses
BS 55 479 Origins and biogeographic patterns in Ericaceae: New insights from recent phylogenetic analyses Kathleen A. Kron and James L. Luteyn Kron, KA. & Luteyn, J.L. 2005. Origins and biogeographic patterns in Ericaceae: New insights from recent phylogenetic analyses. Biol. Skr. 55: 479-500. ISSN 0366-3612. ISBN 87-7304-304-4. Ericaceae are a diverse group of woody plants that span the temperate and tropical regions of the world. Previous workers have suggested that Ericaceae originated in Gondwana, but recent phy logenetic studies do not support this idea. The theory of a Gondwanan origin for the group was based on the concentration of species richness in the Andes, southern Africa, and the southwest Pacific islands (most of which are thought to be of Gondwanan origin). The Andean diversity is comprised primarily of Vaccinieae with more than 800 species occurring in northern South America, Central America, and the Antilles. In the Cape Region of South Africa the genus Erica is highly diverse with over 600 species currently recognized. In the southwest Pacific islands, Vac cinieae and Rhodoreae are very diverse with over 290 species of Rhododendron (sect. Vireya) and approximately 500 species of Vaccinieae (I)imorphanthera, Paphia, Vaccinium). Recent phyloge netic studies have also shown that the Styphelioideae (formerly Epacridaceae) are included within Ericaceae, thus adding a fourth extremely diverse group (approximately 520 species) in areas considered Gondwanan in origin. Phylogenetic studies of the family on a global scale, how ever, have indicated that these highly diverse “Gondwanan” groups are actually derived from within Ericaceae. Both Fitch parsimony character optimization (using MacClade 4.0) and disper- sal-vicariance analysis (DIVA) indicate that Ericaceae is Laurasian in origin.

(((\ .... -n` V %,i INTRODUCTORY NOTE In i9i9 the Museum tried an experiment in the presenta- tion of its collections. A selection of objects in the decoration of which plants predominated was shown side by side with living plants supplied by the New York Botanical Garden. The experiment was on a scale small enough to be tried in one of the classroomsand the selection of plants and objects was modestly limited in number. Nevertheless, so illuminating was that first attempt that it has been ever since an ambition of the staff to repeat the exhibition on a more comprehensive scale, and this summer it is being given again, now in Gallery D6 and with largely increased material from the collections of the Museum and from the botanic gardens both of New York and of Brooklyn. Such an exhibition should be looked on, in a way, as a ka- leidoscope, readjusting its structure and its pattern with each slight shift between the points of view of one visitor and an- other. Those interested in the history of art will see a deco- rative plant motive adopted by one people, passedto another, metamorphosed in its new environment and under the hus- bandry of a different race, and then passedon through stage after stage of an evolution of design which parallels the evo- lution of the most fundamental of man's intellectual proc- esses. The striking synchronism between the periods of fer- ment in both design and intellectual activities makes obvious how essentially art is a part of the whole organism of civili- zation.

The inventory project begun at the initiative of Werner Pichler which mentions the engravings of the north of Fuerteventura with 2866 individual figures and the work briefly mentioned in the nomination dossier of several researchers from the Universidad de La Laguna, on the island of Tenerife, and the Universidad de Las Palmas, on the island of Gran Canaria could assist in this task. Table 2.a.llists all the attributes and components of the cultural landscape of Risco Caldo and its buffer zone (p. 34). However, only part of the sites are described in the nomination dossier (p.

Their isolation has given rise to many endemic species and subspecies, of which the great views of Tenerife Blue Chaffinch in perfect light were a highlight for many. We marvelled over the flora, so different to that of mainland Europe, and enjoyed the various species of lizards, plus the butterflies and other invertebrates we encountered. The day on La Gomera was a delight, not least for the numbers of Cory’s Shearwaters, whales and dolphins, plus the White-faced Storm Petrels we encountered. Lovely weather with plenty of sunshine, comfortable accommodation, good food and great company all made for an excellent week. Day 1 Saturday 23rd February Fly to Tenerife South – La Chafiras – Road to Vilaflor Fifteen tour group members met with Andrew and Jessica at Gatwick’s North Terminal for the 6.50am Easyjet flight to Tenerife South Airport. After a bit of a delay due to fog at Gatwick, we landed on the island at around 12.15pm, meeting up with our last group member, who had arrived on the island the previous day.

  • G3.7 Mediterranean Lowland to Submontane Pinus Woodland
European Red List of Habitats - Forests Habitat Group G3.7 Mediterranean lowland to submontane Pinus woodland Summary This habitat includes forests of Pinus halepensis, P. brutia, P. pinaster and P. pinea distributed on infertile soils mainly within the Mediterranean biogeographic region where they have played a fundamental role in shaping the traditional landscapes. They occur at a variety of altitudes on different substrates, the associated floras varying accordingly. Uncontrolled fire, often related to land abandonment and development processes, is a threat and grazing afterwards can influence regeneration. Integrated landscape management is essential to retain this habitat within the often complex contexts in which it occurs. Synthesis The habitat type qualifies as Least Concern (LC) because it has an extensive distribution (total estimated area, EOO and AOO) across the Mediterranean and a small part also to the Continental biogeographical zones, the reduction in quantity over the past 50 years has been very small (ca 2%) and in most areas the habitat has been stable (regarding its spatial extent). The decline in quality (abiotic and/or biotic) is slight to moderate (average severity 44%) affecting 5% of the extent of the habitat throughout its distribution over the past 50 years.
