The Samoan Diaspora Church in New Zealand The Samoan diaspora church in New Zealand: Patterns of movement and dynamics amongst three generations of Samoan families Feiloaiga Janette Taule’ale’ausumai A thesis submitted to Auckland University of Technology in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) 2018 School of Social Sciences and Public Policy Faculty of Culture and Society i Abstract This qualitative study explored the dynamics of movement in the Samoan diaspora church in New Zealand using a case study of three generations of Samoan families who began their journeys within the Pacific Island (Congregational/Presbyterian) Church. It has mapped the journeys and patterns of 27 participants within seven families and recorded the emerging trends, patterns and themes along with their various narratives that emerged from their talanoaga (verbal interviews). The purpose of the thesis is to document the movement of Samoan families between churches and the emerging trends and patterns: how many moved, why they moved and where they chose to move to. It identifies the reasons why they left their original churches and why they eventually moved on from one church to another and looks at these dynamics and their own personal narratives behind these moves. It also asks the question of whether the fa’asamoa and Samoan language were important factors in where they chose to worship. The methodology used for this research was talanoa. This was to capture the essence of language and the nuances of culture and observation. The key findings of this study were that while there were changes in churches by six families over three generations, one family had no movement. For the second and third- generation participants, the Samoan language and fa’asamoa, although important, did not feature as a consideration when it came to choosing a new church to worship in. Anecdotal evidence suggests that from first-generation to third-generation families there was a weakening of the fa’asamoa and Samoan language and culture. Many first- generation parents learnt the English language from their second-generation children. ii Questions of Samoanness is highly debated and a challenge to youth especially as is related to language competence. This study also showed that people left churches en masse when a conflict arose involving the minister. The churches would split and one side would walk out creating a schism. Most of these conflicts were unresolved, resulting in the departure of families from their church to join new churches or form new ones. This study has highlighted a significant number of organisational issues which should be considered by church leadership and congregations if the church is to maintain its role and relevance in the lives of Samoan diaspora families today. For example church organisation, hierarchical leadership, pastoral care, and financial issues. This thesis has raised issues that need challenging. In order to reduce these type of departures there needs to be accountability procedures in place in the churches particularly with clergy to address issues of conflict and a provision for pastoral care to those who have been aggrieved. It is possible that the result of this research could differ enormously if this study was carried out with a Samoan Congregational (C.C.C.S.) or Samoan Methodist three- generational families. This study will be of value if the recommendations are implemented particularly around the issue of identity. It needs to be clear that Samoan identity is not dependent on one’s ability to speak the Samoan language and carry out the fa’asamoa. Although these are important it is not necessarily an easily-achievable goal for many second- and third- generation New Zealand-born Samoans. Samoan identity should be based on biological ties and connection and not on competencies in language and culture. This study adds value to knowledge and practice by highlighting the different journeys of three generations and their experiences within the church. It is ground-breaking in iii that there has been no study of this type before and therefore it will raise some important issues for the church to consider for future generations. Abstract The cultural hero Māui is a phenomenon that occurs in nearly all the mytholo- gical systems of Polynesia. His origin is remarkable and is mostly partly divine and partly human. This paper analyses different variants of the Polynesian myths about Māui, espe- cially focusing on his origin, the circumstances of his birth and variants of his parents’ names and siblings. Keywords Polynesia, Mythology · Māui, Analysis of Variants in the Tradition A trickster or culture hero is a mythical being found in the mythologies of many archaic societies. In some mythologies, the culture hero is given a divine origin; in others he is a demigod or only a spirit that acts on the command of a higher deity. Prometheus, for example, was of a purely divine origin. According to Hesiod’s Theogony, he was the son of Iapetus and the Oceanid Clymene. Māui of Polynesia is an example of a culture hero who was present in most versions of myths of semi-divine origin: in Maori mythology he came from the 156 SOS 13 · 2 (2014) lineage of Tu-mata-uenga, and in Hawaiian mythology his mother was the goddess Hina-a-he-ahi (‘Hina of the fire’).

    KEYNOTE SPEAKERS 1 Keynote 1 From Maoritanga to Matauranga: Indigenous Knowledge Discourses Linda Tuhiwai Smith (NMM, Cinema) _______________________________________________________________________________ My talk examines the current fascination with matauranga Maori in policy and curriculum. I am interested in the way academic discourses have shifted dramatically to encompass Maori interests and ways of understanding knowledge. I explore some aspects of the development of different approaches to Maori in the curriculum and track the rising interest in matauranga (traditional Maori knowledge) through a period of neoliberal approaches to curriculum in our education system and measurement of research excellence. The Performance Based Research Fund recognises matauranga Maori as a field of research, Government research funds ascribe to a Vision Matauranga policy which must be addressed in all contestable research funds and there are qualifications, majors and subject papers which teach matauranga Maori at tertiary level. New Zealand leads the world in terms of incorporating indigenous knowledge, language and culture into curriculum. Most of the named qualifications are accredited through the New Zealand Qualifications Authority, which then owns the intellectual property of the curriculum. Maori individuals clearly play a significant role in developing the curriculum and resources. They are mostly motivated by wanting to provide a Maori-friendly and relevant curriculum.     AUSTRALIA AND THE PACIFIC: THE AMBIVALENT PLACE OF PACIFIC PEOPLES WITHIN CONTEMPORARY AUSTRALIA Scott William Mackay, BA (Hons), BSc July 2018 Submitted in total fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Australian Indigenous Studies Program School of Culture and Communication The University of Melbourne 0000-0002-5889 – Abstract – My thesis examines the places (real and symbolic) accorded to Pacific peoples within the historical production of an Australian nation and in the imaginary of Australian nationalism. It demonstrates how these places reflect and inform the ways in which Australia engages with the Pacific region, and the extent to which Australia considers itself a part of or apart from the Pacific. While acknowledging the important historical and contemporary differences between the New Zealand and Australian contexts, I deploy theoretical concepts and methods developed within the established field of New Zealand- centred Pacific Studies to identify and analyse what is occurring in the much less studied Australian-Pacific context. In contrast to official Australian discourse, the experiences of Pacific people in Australia are differentiated from those of other migrant communities because of: first, Australia’s colonial and neo-colonial histories of control over Pacific land and people; and second, Pacific peoples' important and unique kinships with Aboriginal Australians. Crucially the thesis emphasises the significant diversity (both cultural and national) of the Pacific experience in Australia. My argument is advanced first by a historicisation of Australia’s formal engagements with Pacific people, detailing intersecting narratives of their migration to Australia and Australia’s colonial and neo- colonial engagements within the Pacific region.
