Māuruuru roa ’e te aroha ia rahi... iv ABSTRACT Nā Pōhaku Ola Kapaemāhū a Kapuni is a Kanaka Maoli cultural monument in the heart of the world famous Waikīkī, on the island of Oʻahu. While this site plays a vital role in the preservation of indigenous knowledge systems and navigational histories, these stones have not always been visible and tell a dynamic story through how they have been valued and interacted with differently across time. By weaving a genealogy of this culture keystone place, this thesis reveals the complex and complicated “life” of this site through its the legendary, historical, and contemporary histories. In looking at its legendary traditions within a cultural and regional comparative of stone sites, this site is shown to have multidimensional meanings encoding epistemological and geographical knowledges and connects to other sacred sites in Hawaiʻi and the wider Pacific. Yet, looking at the newspaper archives and how these stones were physically displaced in the 20th century, Nā Pōhaku Ola also reveals histories of a contested and changing landscape and how various social and historical processes shaped discourses regarding their value. These sacred stones document a story of colonial forces but also a story of revitalization and the perdurance of Hawaiian history in the unlikeliest of places. Finally, this thesis investigates the contemporary meanings of this site by looking beyond the archive to intercultural protocol moments. This focus on performed histories and site engagement reveals how Nā Pōhaku Ola’s various meanings are performed and remembered in the present. Further, it shows that this cultural site is mediating the space between Maoli and Mā’ohi worlds by revealing longstanding mobilities and the building of contemporary solidarities. The 1990 report examines a study done in 1989 to, assess career advancement opportunities for native Hawaiians in the hotel industry. The study, which was based on a literature review and two rounds of key informant interviews, indicated that native Hawaiian managers are still underrepresented in Hawaii's hotel industry. The Hawaii state legislature appropriated funds to provide tourism training to 177 participants in a pilot series of professional seminars called the School of Travel Industry Management. (TIM). A 6-year action plan for TIM and 16 program improvement recommendations were also developed. The 1991 report looks at a study that assessed training needs at Honolulu International Airport (HIA). In general, most of the airport's employees were found to need training in public relations, safety, control of substance abuse, literacy, foreign language brush-up, and career upgrade. A second study examined the in-housetraining dimension in Hawaii's visitor industry.

They were out here in this remote area and they needed to get the sugar to market, and so that was built in order to get the sugar, and whatever else they were growing, to Honolulu to the markets. February 3, 2015 Abstract This article recounts the early years of one of the most successful tourist destinations in the world, Hawaii, from about 1870 to 1940. Tourism began in Hawaii when faster and more predictable steamships replaced sailing vessels in trans-Pacific travel. Governments (international, national, and local) were influential in shaping the way Hawaii tourism developed, from government mail subsidies to steamship companies, local funding for tourism promotion, and America’s protective legislation on domestic shipping. Hawaii also reaped a windfall from its location at the crossroads of the major trade routes in the Pacific region. The article concludes with policy lessons.     ALAN HOWARD and JAN RENSEL Rotuman identity in the Electronic Age For some groups cultural identity comes easy; at least it's relatively unprob- lematic. As Fredrik Barth (1969) pointed out many years ago, where bounda­ ries between groups are fixed and rigid, theories of group distinctiveness thrive. Boundaries can be set according to a wide range of physical, social, or cultural characteristics ranging from skin colour, religious affiliation or beliefs, occupations, to what people eat, and so on. Social hierarchy also can play a determining role, especially when a dominating group's social theory divides people into categories on the basis of geographical origins, blood­ lines, or some other defining characteristic, restricting their identity options. In the United States, for example, the historical category of 'negro' allowed little room for choice; any US citizen with an African ancestor was assigned to the category regardless of personal preference. Although in Polynesia social boundaries have traditionally been porous, cultural politics has transformed categories like 'New Zealand Maori' and 'Hawaiian' into strong identities, despite more personal choice and somewhat flexible boundaries. In these cases, where indigenous people were subjugated by European or American colonists, a long period of historically muted iden­ tity gave way in the last decades of the twentieth century to a Polynesian cul­ tural renaissance that has been accompanied by a hardening of social catego­ ries and a dramatic strengthening of Maori and Hawaiian identities. Samoans also have a relatively strong sense of cultural identity, but for a different reason. In their case, identity is reinforced by a commitment to fa'asamoa, the Samoan way of life.
