As you prepare to begin life at the U, you will share many similar experiences with other students starting with ’Cane Kickoff. Events such as ’Canes Take Flight, orientation group meetings, and the President's Celebration for New Students are designed to give you an exciting introduction to the University of Miami and promote a common experience for incoming students. At the same time, we encourage you to tailor your orientation experience to your own personal needs and preferences.

Your five-day 'Cane Kickoff experience will be comprised of programs designed for all incoming students, events related to your undergraduate School, and additional activities tailored to your specific interests. Please pay particular attention to REQUIRED EVENTS as these are critical curricular and co-curricular offerings that are mandatory. We also strongly encourage you participate in optional events in order to make the most of your ’Cane Kickoff experience.

Please note that family members generally attend separate sessions from students because sessions are designed to meet each group’s particular needs and interests. Everyone on campus, including our ’Cane Kickoff orientation staff, is excited to help you learn all you need to know about being a student at the U and will assist you by offering information and support to make the transition as seamless as possible.

Pick up your 'Cane Card (University ID) New students living in Eaton, Hecht, or Stanford Residential College will take their ’Cane Card photo and receive it when checking in for housing. All other students living on or off campus will take their ’Cane Card photo and receive it in the Whitten University Center, Biscayne 1220. Photo stations will be available Tuesday, August 15 and Wednesday, August 16 from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. *Please note: For security reasons, your photo will be taken in person at this time.

Experience UM sessions allow new students to explore the many opportunities available at UM. Some sessions are offered multiple times. Attend as many of these sessions as you can, as they will provide useful information for a successful college experience.

Experience UM sessions are meant to be interactive and educational. Sessions will be formatted based on one of the three categories below. Choose the format and topics that feel right to you! EXPERIENCE UM EXPLORE. ENGAGE. ENHANCE. EXPLORE  In these sessions, students will get to explore their interests through interactive panelists, roundtables, and discussions. These sessions are meant to create dialogue and conversations on specific topics.

ENGAGE  In these unique sessions, students will engage through experiential learning and hands-on experiences. These sessions are intended to have students engaging in day-to-day activities they would have as a student.

ENHANCE  In these traditional sessions, students will be able to enhance their knowledge on a specific subject. These will be presentation-style sessions offering informative insight and resources for new students.

15 FRIDAY, AUGUST 18 7:00 am - 7:50 am Bootcamp  Meet at the Lakeside Patio Join us for a total body workout that incorporates a mix of lifting, jumping, sprinting, hurdles, and performing drills. This workout is meant to challenge and give you a boost of energy for the rest of the day! All fitness levels welcome.

8:00 am - 8:50 am Morning Yoga  Shalala Student Center, Lakeview Terrace Increase your strength, flexibility and balance through a variety of yoga postures. Deepen your relaxation skills, refine your ability to focus, and improve your self-awareness using breathing techniques. No prior yoga experience required. Bring a towel to participate in this event.
