When a mysterious Chinese stranger Qjang appears one night, Spencer figures the old man is an easy mark but is unexpectedly beaten, losing his £50 stake. Only later does Spencer learn that Qjang is a former ‘eight ball’ pool champion sent by his estranged father Terry who is newly released from prison and eager to help his son escape the drug filled estates and make a bid for a prestigious amateur snooker tournament held in Beijing. Qjang agrees to coach Spencer for the Big Time but only if he breaks away from the bad habits and wrong crowd that have influenced his life and are affecting his game. When Spencer’s close friend Denis is murdered, his life spirals out of control. Inadvertently in deep debt to a dangerous drug dealer Ginger - Ray, Terry and Qjang, must act quickly to help Spencer escape to Beijing where he faces his biggest break, the one which could save his life. She has perfected the art of the maid of honor speech, delivering heartfelt toasts to the happy couples. And her “something new” gifts – stunning, handmade jewelry designed to complement the bride and her dress – are given with love and received with awe. Becca doesn’t worry that she is “always a bridesmaid, never a bride.” An unapologetic romantic, she believes true love will happen instantly and effortlessly when the right person comes along. She gracefully evades well-meaning, if unsolicited, offers to fix her up with various eligible men, knowing that love can’t be forced. While Becca is firm in her convictions about love, she’s less certain when it comes to her work at the insurance agency founded by her parents, Joyce (Desiree Zurowski) and Richard (Fred Henderson). With her parents about to retire, preparations have begun to transfer ownership of the successful business to Becca. Yet as proud as she is of her parents’ achievements, Becca can’t quite convince herself that she’s as excited about the takeover as they are. It’s all Becca can do to juggle her expanding workload with the 10-week timetable of her cousin Lucie’s (Stephanie Bennett) June wedding to Craig (Clayton Chitty). She also must manage the expectations of happy couple, who are trying to pair her up with Craig’s college roommate Aidan (Jeremy Guilbaut), who is best man to Becca’s maid of honor. Meanwhile, there’s another man in the picture, or more accurately, behind the camera: Kyle Taylor (Paul Campbell), the handsome wedding videographer who has been hired by Lucie’s producer father Paul (Barry Levy) to document every step of the couple’s journey to the altar. Kyle most definitely does not share Becca’s philosophy of love, but they have other things in common, notably outspokenness and creative aspirations that go beyond their day jobs. Kyle recognizes Becca’s talent and passion for jewelry design and urges her to take advantage of a bridal shop’s interest in showing her work. And Becca is just as adamant that Kyle move forward with his career as a documentary filmmaker after he shows her portions of his current, deeply personal project. By the weekend of the wedding, Becca and Kyle’s mutual support have edged them closer to their dreams, and to romance. But Becca nearly extinguishes the growing spark between them when Kyle learns she has allowed her uncle to view part of his unfinished film without his knowledge or permission. With a new understanding of love, Becca sets aside her prepared maid of honor remarks to speak directly from her heart – hoping that she will touch Kyle’s. • Stanley Kubrick's 18Th Century
Stanley Kubrick’s 18th Century: Painting in Motion and Barry Lyndon as an Enlightenment Gallery Alysse Peery Abstract The only period piece by famed Stanley Kubrick, Barry Lyndon, was a 1975 box office flop, as well as the director’s magnum opus. Perhaps one of the most sumptuous and exquisite examples of cinematography to date, this picaresque film effectively recreates the Age of the Enlightenment not merely through facts or events, but in visual aesthetics. Like exploring the past in a museum exhibit, the film has a painterly quality harkening back to the old masters. The major artistic movements that reigned throughout the setting of the story dominate the manner in which Barry Lyndon tells its tale with Kubrick’s legendary eye for detail. Through visual understanding, the once obscure novel by William Makepeace Thackeray becomes a captivating window into the past in a manner similar to the paintings it emulates. In 1975, the famed and monumental director Stanley Kubrick released his one and only box-office flop. A film described as a “coffee table film”, it was his only period piece, based on an obscure novel by William Makepeace Thackeray (Patterson). Ironically, his most forgotten work is now considered his magnum opus by critics, and a complete masterwork of cinematography (BFI, “Art”). A remarkable example of the historical costume drama, it enchants the viewer in a meticulously crafted vision of the Georgian Era. Stanley Kubrick’s film Barry Lyndon encapsulates the painting, aesthetics, and overall feel of the 18th century in such a manner to transform the film into a sort of gallery of period art and society.

The Wiz is a 1978 American musical adventure fantasy film produced by Universal Pictures and Motown Productions and released by Universal Pictures on October 24, 1978. A reimagining of L. Frank Baum's classic 1900 children's novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz featuring an all-black cast, the film was loosely adapted from the 1974 Broadway musical of the same name. It follows the adventures of Dorothy, a shy, twenty-four-year-old Harlem schoolteacher who finds herself magically transported to the urban fantasy Land of Oz, which resembles a dream version of New York City. Befriended by a Scarecrow, a Tin Man, and a Cowardly Lion, she travels through the city to seek an audience with the mysterious Wiz, who they say is the only one powerful enough to send her home. Filming took place in Queens, New York from October to December of 1977. Produced by Rob Cohen and directed by Sidney Lumet, the film stars Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, Nipsey Russell, Ted Ross, Mabel King, Theresa Merritt, Thelma Carpenter, Lena Horne and Richard Pryor. Its story was reworked from William F. Brown's Broadway libretto by Joel Schumacher, and Quincy Jones supervised the adaptation of Charlie Smalls and Luther Vandross' songs for it.

STATIC, YET FLUCTUATING: THE EVOLUTION OF BATMAN AND HIS AUDIENCES by PERRY DUPRE DANTZLER Under the Direction of H. Calvin Thomas ABSTRACT The Batman media franchise (comics, movies, novels, television, and cartoons) is unique because no other form of written or visual texts has as many artists, audiences, and forms of expression. Understanding the various artists and audiences and what Batman means to them is to understand changing trends and thinking in American culture. The character of Batman has developed into a symbol with relevant characteristics that develop and evolve with each new story and new author. The Batman canon has become so large and contains so many different audiences that it has become a franchise that can morph to fit any group of viewers/readers. Our understanding of Batman and the many readings of him gives us insight into ourselves as a culture in our particular place in history.
