Idioms and Expressions by David Holmes A method for learning and remembering idioms and expressions I wrote this model as a teaching device during the time I was working in Bangkok, Thai- land, as a legal editor and language consultant, with one of the Big Four Legal and Tax companies, KPMG (during my afternoon job) after teaching at the university. When I had no legal documents to edit and no individual advising to do (which was quite frequently) I would sit at my desk, (like some old character out of a Charles Dickens’ novel) and prepare language materials to be used for helping professionals who had learned English as a second language—for even up to fifteen years in school—but who were still unable to follow a movie in English, understand the World News on TV, or converse in a colloquial style, because they’d never had a chance to hear and learn com- mon, everyday expressions such as, “It’s a done deal!” or “Drop whatever you’re doing.” Because misunderstandings of such idioms and expressions frequently caused miscom- munication between our management teams and foreign clients, I was asked to try to as- sist. I am happy to be able to share the materials that follow, such as they are, in the hope that they may be of some use and benefit to others. The simple teaching device I used was three-fold: 1. Make a note of an idiom/expression 2. Define and explain it in understandable words (including synonyms.) 3. Give at least three sample sentences to illustrate how the expression is used in context.

Following twelve months maternity leave, Senior Crown Prosecutor Janet King (Marta Dusseldorp) returns to the DPP to confront a high-profile murder and a conspiracy, which will have shocking ramifications throughout the judicial system - as well as threaten all she holds dear. With Tony Gillies (Peter Kowitz) now the Director and a rising star prosecutor (Damian Walshe-Howling as Owen Mitchell) well entrenched in the DPP, Janet juggles legal cases and motherhood in equal measure. Following the Attorney General’s decree that there be a closer working relationship between the DPP and the Police, Chief Superintendent Jack Rizzoli (Vince Colosimo) is taking a very ‘hands on’ approach in the cases for prosecution, and especially Janet’s campaign to expose the truth behind a shocking murder that strikes at the very heart of the justice system. Also appearing in the compelling high stakes legal thriller are John Howard, Jessica Napier, Zoe Carides, Terry Serio, Deborah Kennedy and Tiriel Mora, as well as returning Crownies alumni Hamish Michael, Ella Scott Lynch, Christopher Morris, Andrea Demetriades, Jeanette Cronin, Lewis Fitz-Gerald, Aimee Pedersen, and Indiana Evans. © 2013 Screentime Pty Ltd, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation and Screen NSW Page 2 Janet King was series produced by Karl Zwicky, produced by Lisa Scott and co-produced by Jane Allen, with Hilary Bonney as story consultant and associate producer.

  • A SCREENTIME Production for ABC TV They Know the Law Backwards
A SCREENTIME production for ABC TV They know the law backwards … … but they have a lot to learn about life! As at 30.7.11 Delving into the extraordinary world of the Department of Public Prosecutions and its young eager lawyers, CROWNIES is the new 22 x 1 hour drama produced by SCREENTIME Australia for ABC TV. CROWNIES follows five young solicitors, as they face the pressures and endearing madness of modern single life - in a fast paced workplace that highlights the moral dilemmas and big issues facing an apparently civilized society. In a world that exists solely to see ‘wrong-doers’ brought to justice, and where the average age of the solicitors is 27, there is a big divide between these young solicitors and the barristers at the top. Yet they are the initial point of contact with the police, and it is they who do most of the liaising with the victims and the witnesses - and recommend what goes to court. They are committed, idealistic and hard-working, but their lives away from the office are riddled with aspirations, explorations, fragile relationships and partying. A SCREENTIME production for ABC TV Page 2 ABOUT THE PRODUCTION Currently in production, the outstanding ensemble cast includes Todd Lasance (Cloudstreet, Underbelly Files – Tell Them Lucifer Was Here, Rescue Special Ops, Home & Away) Hamish Michael (Spirited, City Homicide, Lucky Miles); Ella Scott Lynch (City Homicide, All Saints, The Falls); Andrea Demetriades (Bell Shakespeare Company, All Saints) and Indiana Evans (A Model Daughter: The Killing of Caroline Byrne, H2O

LEGACY PROJECT A century-old feud over tribal fishing ignited brawls along Northwest rivers in the 1960s. Roughed up, belittled, and handcuffed on the banks of the Nisqually River, Billy Frank Jr. emerged as one of the most influential Indians in modern history. Inspired by his father and his heritage, the elder united rivals and survived personal trials in his long career to protect salmon and restore the environment. Alex & Eve (Australia 2015) DIRECTOR : Peter Andrikidis RUNNING TIME : 92mins RATING : M Synopsis: Alex (Richard Brancatisano) is a 30 something Greek Orthodox whose parents want him to marry a good Greek girl. But Alex has fallen in love with Eve (Andrea Demetriades), a Lebanese Muslim woman whose parents are adamant she marries Mohomad (Hazem Shammas), an old family friend from Lebanon. Like oil and water, the two should never mix. Torn between different religions, traditional and modern values, Alex and Eve must do everything under the heavens to stop themselves from falling in love. Review: Louise Keller With its upbeat vibe and charismatic leads, there's something irresistible about this laugh-out loud cross- culture Aussie rom com. Adapted from his stage-play, Alex Lykos has written a multi-layered screenplay bursting with home truths and colour. If you liked My Big Fat Greek Wedding (2002), you will warm to this good-hearted, larger than life tale in which The Kings of Mykonos director, Peter Andrikidis captures the essence of how true love conquers all. It might be played for laughs and the feel good ending is never in doubt, but reality bubbles through beautifully with moments of pathos along the way. Getting married is the theme from the get-go and in the opening wedding scene, it is hardly a recommendation when we hear that once married you are miserable; but at least you are married! The pressure is on - for handsome high school teacher Alex (Richard Brancatisano) and attractive lawyer Eve (Andrea Demetriades) - to find a spouse and settle down.

ISSUE 22 THE LAST POST INTERVIEWS KEN DONE DAVID WILLIAMSON LINDA GEORGE COVID–19 WE LOOK AT THE EFFECT ON AUSTRALIA OF THE PANDEMIC THAT IS SWEEPING THE WORLD BUSHFIRES OUR WORST NATURAL DISASTER IN HISTORY TRAILBLAZERS 100 INSPIRING WOMEN THE BATTLES FOR KOKODA THE 75TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE END OF WW2 The Last Post Story Through bloodlines, The Last Post magazine started at Gallipoli. Its acorn then fought with the 2/10th in Milne Bay, Buna and Balikpapan and trekked the Kokoda in WW2. By the late-sixties, The Last Post magazine was ready to be born. Raymond Thorsby Ross, who had fought in PNG and the son of Joseph Thorsby Ross, who had fought at Gallipoli, leased a small office in George Street, Sydney. Raymond had decided that a small magazine, designed to help RSLs and their members, should be introduced in New South Wales. To do this he would need advertising to help pay printing and distribution costs. Daily, Raymond would take the train from suburban Chatswood to the city and phone local businesses and sporting clubs, asking for their support. This ex-digger and RSL member worked long hours to get each edition out and was effectively the magazine’s editor, graphic designer and distributor. In 1974, Raymond and his partner moved to Scarborough in suburban Perth and continued The Last Post in Western Australia until his death in 1983. Twenty-eight years later, Raymond’s son and Joseph’s grandson, Gregory Thorsby Ross brought his father’s magazine back to life. Greg had lived with his father as a 15-year old, when he started working as a copy-boy and cadet journalist at The Sydney Morning Herald.
