The Commonwealth Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade recognise the importance of the Barossa region by specifically referring to it on their website (http://www.dfat.gov.au/facts/wine.html) when. providing an overview of the importance of the wine sector in Australia: ' Wine grape growing and winemaking are carried out in each of the six states and two mainland territories of Australia. The principal production areas are located in the south-east quarter of the Australian continent, in the states of South Australia, New South Wales and Victoria. Wineries in South Australia's Barossa Valley, in the Hunter River region north of Sydney in New South Wales and in Victoria played a major role in the development of the industry and continue to be important sources of fine wines. In South Australia, wine contributes around 11% of the state's Gross State product, contributing around $2.4 billion to the state's economy. In 2009/10, the Barossa region contributed $85 million {20%) in production value to the state's total wine value. CULTURE AND NATURE: THE EUROPEAN HERITAGE OF SHEEP FARMING AND PASTORAL LIFE RESEARCH THEME: SHEEP BASED CUISINE SYNTHESIS REPORT FIRST DRAFT By Zsolt Sári HUNGARIAN OPEN AIR MUSEUM January 2012 INTRODUCTION The history of sheep consume and sheep based cuisine in Europe. While hunger is a biologic drive, food and eating serve not only the purpose to meet physiological needs but they are more: a characteristic pillar of our culture. Food and nutrition have been broadly determined by environment and economy. At the same time they are bound to the culture and the psychological characteristics of particular ethnic groups. The idea of cuisine of every human society is largely ethnically charged and quite often this is one more sign of diversity between communities, ethnic groups and people. In ancient times sheep and shepherds were inextricably tied to the mythology and legends of the time. According to ancient Greek mythology Amaltheia was the she-goat nurse of the god Zeus who nourished him with her milk in a cave on Mount Ida in Crete. When the god reached maturity he created his thunder-shield (aigis) from her hide and the ‘horn of plenty’ (keras amaltheias or cornucopia) from her horn. Sheep breeding played an important role in ancient Greek economy as Homer and Hesiod testify in their writings. Indeed, during the Homeric age, meat was a staple food: lambs, goats, calves, giblets were charcoal grilled. In several Rhapsodies of Homer’s Odyssey, referring to events that took place circa 1180 BC, there is mention of roasting lamb on the spit. Homer called Ancient Thrace „the mother of sheep”. -

:: SCAN | journal of media arts culture :: Scan Journal vol 2 number 1 april 2005 "I’d rather take Methadone than Ken Done": Branding Sydney in the 1980s Susie Khamis Introduction From tourist bureaus and urban developers to the Bicentennial Authority and the ALP, there was a short period in the 1980s when the image of “Ken Done’s” Sydney was both economically viable and culturally resonant. His signature motif of the Sydney Harbour Bridge — “a riot of dashing colours and blunt brush strokes” (Gibson and Connell 2001:292) — became so widely reproduced that, in some circles, it came to signify more than just Done’s style. It became a metonym for Australia itself, portraying the brash optimism and hedonism of the 1980s. However, as a recent advertising campaign suggests, this image of Sydney had a finite appeal, convenient only to the extent that Done’s particular association with Sydney had currency. An examination of this period thus reveals two things: that Sydney exists as a concept as much as a place, and is therefore elastic enough to inspire any number of ideals and attributes; and that, in turn, these ideals and attributes compete in a marketplace of sorts, valued in accordance with market interests and connotative effects. This paper will apply these observations to a discussion of Done’s work, both how it constituted Sydney, and how it was then appropriated by those that had vested interests in the image(s) of Sydney. In short, this paper will consider this aspect of Done’s work in order to demonstrate the politics of image management. -

Brookey, Northern Illinois University ABSTRACT This is a critical cultural and political economic analysis of the video game as an engine of global anxiety and desire. Attempting to move beyond conventional studies of the video game as a thing-in-itself, relatively self-contained as a textual, ludic, or even technological (in the narrow sense of the word) phenomenon, I propose that gaming has come to operate as an epistemological imperative that extends beyond the site of gaming in itself. Play and pleasure have come to affect sites of culture and the structural formation of various populations beyond those conceived of as belonging to conventional gaming populations: the workplace, consumer experiences, education, warfare, and even the practice of politics itself, amongst other domains. Indeed, the central claim of this dissertation is that the video game operates with the same political and cultural gravity as that ascribed to the prison by Michel Foucault. That is, just as the prison operated as the discursive site wherein the disciplinary imaginary was honed, so too does digital play operate as that discursive site wherein the ludic imperative has emerged. To make this claim, I have had to move beyond the conventional theoretical frameworks utilized in the analysis of video games. -

Idioms and Expressions by David Holmes A method for learning and remembering idioms and expressions I wrote this model as a teaching device during the time I was working in Bangkok, Thai- land, as a legal editor and language consultant, with one of the Big Four Legal and Tax companies, KPMG (during my afternoon job) after teaching at the university. When I had no legal documents to edit and no individual advising to do (which was quite frequently) I would sit at my desk, (like some old character out of a Charles Dickens’ novel) and prepare language materials to be used for helping professionals who had learned English as a second language—for even up to fifteen years in school—but who were still unable to follow a movie in English, understand the World News on TV, or converse in a colloquial style, because they’d never had a chance to hear and learn com- mon, everyday expressions such as, “It’s a done deal!” or “Drop whatever you’re doing.” Because misunderstandings of such idioms and expressions frequently caused miscom- munication between our management teams and foreign clients, I was asked to try to as- sist. I am happy to be able to share the materials that follow, such as they are, in the hope that they may be of some use and benefit to others. The simple teaching device I used was three-fold: 1. Make a note of an idiom/expression 2. Define and explain it in understandable words (including synonyms.) 3. Give at least three sample sentences to illustrate how the expression is used in context. -
A Pictorial History of the Star Class
FOREWORD From its very beginning the Star Class has attracted photographers’ attention. Morris Rosenfeld and Edwin Levick were among the early photographers who took pictures of the Star. The beauty and power of the modern Star boat continues to be an object interest for both amateur and professional photographer. We are thus fortunate to have a fairly good pictorial record of the Star Class starting with those early days of 1911 when the Stars first put in an appearance on Long Island Sound and at Nahant Dory Club in Massachusetts. The Star Class also has a very good historical record of itself. An annual Log which lists the boats and their owners, gives race results, carries the Class Rules, and other pertinent information has been published since 1922. An additional source of information is available from Starlights, the Star Class newsletter which has been published since 1925. Added to these sources there are two history books about the Star Class: “Forty Years Among the Star”, written by George W. Elder, and “A History of the Star Class”, written by Class Historian and long-time Log and Starlights editor C. Stanley Ogilvy. It is the purpose of this pictorial history to bring together some of the more interesting photographs and events which have appeared in the Star Class publications. PRELUDE The Gaff Rigged Era 1911 – 1920 (and before) The history of the Star began even before 1911. In 1906 a boat called the Bug was designed in the office of William Gardner in New York. These boats about eighteen feet long, were miniature Stars, their design being very similar to the as yet unborn Star boat. -
