ORQUID: ORganic QUantum Integrated Devices

The ORQUID ERA-NET project objectives are to use single organic in photophysical experiments to a) interact with light in waveguides and cavities to generate and detect single photons. b) detect single moving charges in nano-electronic circuits, c) measure nanoscale forces and displacements.

We are looking for an applicant with an excellent background in modern organic synthesis to design and prepare molecular chromophores for these experiments. Substantial experience in common laboratory techniques (handling of air and moisture sensitive reagents, liquid purification, proton and carbon NMR, MS, etc.) is necessary. Good written and verbal communication skills in English are required and strong desire and ability to work in a multidisciplinary environment are essential. The NanoSciences group (http://www.cemes.fr/GNS?lang=en) is a multidisciplinary team involving , surface physicists and theoreticians. Our objective is to achieve a complex function using the smallest possible number of or molecules. The position is opened for one year, with possible extension, starting mid-2018. Please send us a CV (including birth date), a cover letter describing research accomplishments, a list of publications, two letters of recommendation to be sent directly to the email below. For additional information on the project and the working environment, feel free to contact us: André Gourdon - E-mail: [email protected]

Closing date for application: April 1st, 2018.

OTHER

UBC Okanagan’s Centre for Teaching and Learning hosts an annual Learning Conference in early May, including keynote addresses, interactive workshops, and research talks and posters, dealing with all aspects of student learning in post-secondary education. This year the conference roughly coincides with the BC Chemistry Articulation meeting. Between these two events, Tamara Freeman and I will be running a learning resource development workshop for both conference delegates and articulation representatives, where we will guide attendees though the creation of guided-inquiry and other active-learning in-class activities for introductory chemistry classes.

Timeline:

th • 14 Annual UBC Okanagan Learning Conference, Wed-Thu, May 2-3, 2018. http://ctl.ok.ubc.ca/2018learningconference/

• Chemistry Learning Resource Development Workshop, Thu, May 3, 2018.

• BC Chemistry Articulation Meeting, Fri, May 4, 2018.

All events will take place at UBC Okanagan, Kelowna, BC. The call for proposals for the formal conference closes Feb 18, and if we garner a critical mass of presentations in the chemical sciences, the conference organizers will pool them into a single symposium within the conference: the resulting conference and workshop will be a combined two day event, followed by the articulation meeting for the BC chemistry articulation group.

We will also be planning a wine tour for the workshop attendees and articulation representatives.

Accommodation:

While our campus’ Conferences and Accommodations will not yet be open for summer business, the Four Points Sheraton is less than 2 km away from campus, and there will be Airbnbs available within walking distance on Academy Way as students leave for the summer.

Please contact me if you have any questions about these events, and watch the Learning Conference web page for forthcoming details on conference registration and the learning resource workshop.
