It provides a summary of cricket projects, strategies implemented by Cricket NSW and subsequent outcomes during the 2010/11 season. Regional Cricket Managers perform a range of duties as part of the Country Cricket department. The North Coastal Zone encompasses thirteen Junior Cricket and thirteen Senior Cricket affiliates (Associations) from Gloucester to Tweed Heads. This combined area supports 157 clubs, 559 teams, 29 in2CRICKET Centres, 285 primary schools, 67 high schools, and 12,553 male and 1,592 female participants across club and school competitions along with thousands of volunteers. Following is an outline of activities undertaken on the North Coast during the 2010/11 season. North Coast Zonal Report – Season 2010/11 3 2.0 GAME DEVELOPMENT – Recruitment & Retention Recruitment and retention of junior players and volunteers remain the key elements of Game Development activities. Recruitment strategies on the North Coast centred on targeted school visits, media advertising, in2CRICKET.com.au website and pre-printed posters and flyers providing club registration and contact information. The majority of Clubs assisted by providing registration sign-on details and contacts for poster printing and updated their MyCricket website with relevant information. A key strategy in delivering a school visit program as far reaching as possible, required the appointment of Cricket Promotions Officers (CPO’s). The identification and skilling of CPO’s is a major undertaking and required the assistance of local key volunteers. As a result, a total of 7 CPO’s were identified to rollout school visit programs. The number of CPO’s was up from last season, resulting in at least two skilled personnel being identified in each of our three councils. Further efforts are required to identify CPO’s in the Manning and Clarence Valley, as well as retain current CPO’s for next season. Retention of players is a key pillar of the overall Game Development strategy. The ability to measure the levels of retention in junior cricket is a major challenge. If we can effectively measure retention we can then develop more efficient recruitment strategies and more favourable retention methods. 2.1 MILO in2CRICKET School Visits Targeting Years K-4 (5-10 year olds) A key recruitment objective in season 2010/11 was to deliver school visit programs to as many of the 13 Junior Cricket affiliates as practicable. On the North Coast 84 schools (an increase of 33%) and a total of 12,547 students were engaged in school visits that provided practical introductory sessions for students, lesson plans and informal in-service for teaching staff, as well as flyers and posters for students and the school newsletter to assist in providing the linkage to local clubs. In summary, all 13 Junior Cricket affiliates benefited from this program, however, despite all three councils engaging significantly more students than North Coast Zonal Report – Season 2010/11 4 the previous season, only the North Coast increased junior registrations and no regions recorded an increase of in2CRICKET Centres. Next season one hopes to maximize the benefits of this program and make effective use of the strategy’s key objective to link interested players to their local in2CRICKET Centre meaning clubs with existing or potential in2CRICKET Centres will receive priority when booking school visits and delivering resources. Timing of school visits will also be planned later in Term 3 to coincide with club sign on promotions. The main aims of the program are: • To provide a non-competitive environment where youngsters can develop their cricket skills and have fun. • To link young cricketers to their local cricket club/association. • To get more parents actively involved in the game. MILO in2CRICKET is promoted as the first step in a child’s long term involvement in the game of cricket and centres will be linked to a junior cricket club, association or school to lead into Under Age competitions. It is widely recognized that recruitment programs targeting this age group is an important tool to assist clubs/associations achieve targeted participation objectives in Under Age competitions. A strong emphasis is placed on recruitment for this program in our region; however, last season the North Coast was the only Zone to have a decline in in2CRICKET Centres. All Zones experienced a loss of in2CRICKET participants (-15%) which suggests a great deal of effort is required next season to turn this trend around. There are currently 29 in2CRICKET Centre’s with a total of 569 participants across the region. This represents an alarming decrease of 6 centres and 269 participants from season 2009/10. This year saw an alarming 17% decrease in centres and a 32% decrease in player numbers. This drop in participation emphasizes the importance of continual servicing of centres and next season the program will continue its targeted approach to recruitment (prioritising schools that have a link with existing or potential in2CRICKET Centres) with a state wide focus on this entry level age group (Years 1-4). Without active support from Cricket Promotion Officers and commitment from clubs (only 44% of junior clubs have an in2CRICKET Centre!) to create in2CRICKET Centres and form links with their local schools this downward trend will unfortunately continue in our region. Summary and Challenges The challenge for the Regional Cricket Manager is to meet the expectations of the local volunteer and be resourced to the required level to meet these expectations. Again, the key to the resource issue is the identification of enough Cricket Promotions Officers to provide a school visit program and the challenge will be to provide coverage across all affiliates within one’s resources.

    AUSTRALIAN CRICKET INFRASTRUCTURE FUND Supported by FUND OVERVIEW Cricket Australia, in partnership with State and Territory Cricket Associations and the Australian Cricketers’ Association, is committed to developing high quality facilities that provide a welcoming environment for all players, officials, volunteers and fans. The Australian Cricket Infrastructure Fund (ACIF) provides funding for community cricket facility projects, with a focus on growing participation and promoting accessibility and inclusivity. The ACIF will contribute more than $5.6 million per annum into community facility projects, representing Cricket’s largest ever commitment to infrastructure funding. The ACIF is open to all clubs, associations, schools, councils and cricket facility managers, acknowledging the important role that these partners play in providing facilities for community cricket across Australia. GRASSROOTS CRICKET FUND Australian cricketers love playing cricket. They are also passionate about giving back to the game that has given them so much. That is why they have provided $30 million of their own money to support grassroots cricket through the establishment of the Grassroots Cricket Fund. This fund will support initiatives that strengthen grassroots cricket across Australia and ensure that cricket clubs remain the lifeblood of their local communities.
