PERRYSBURG HIGH Program

W hat bands do I register for as an incoming freshman? All freshmen wind players are placed in Symphonic Band for their first year of high school. Percussionists will audition for placement in either Symphonic Band or Percussion Ensembles. Occasionally, a select few may audition and be placed in the upper-level bands. The Symphonic Band and Percussion Ensembles meets daily and rehearses for the full year. Students are also strongly encouraged to register for Marching Band that meets as an after-school class on Tuesdays & Thursdays from 3:35-5:45pm.

W hat does the high school band program include? Curricular classes ● Three concert bands and percussion ensembles that rehearse daily all year and receives 1.0 credit. ● Each band’s placement is based on individual playing ability and there is a place for everyone! There are two upper-level bands: Concert Band and Wind Ensemble. Students who do not audition into Wind Ensemble are placed in Concert Band. ● Marching Band rehearses after school, 3:35-5:45pm, on Tuesdays and Thursdays during the first quarter and receives .5 credit. ● Students are not required to participate in marching band to be in the overall band program, but it is highly encouraged! Marching Band counts for PE credit if students participate in at least two years of marching band! Over 85% of all band students choose to participate in the marching band and have a blast! We strongly encourage incoming freshmen to try it out their first year if they are “on the fence” and then decide if they want to continue in the upper years. Usually, students find out it was not anything like they expected (not scary) and make many new friends and really enjoy performing for large supportive crowds. Since it rehearses completely after school, it does not take a space as one of their seven scheduled classes, meaning students may take a full class schedule PLUS marching band! ● meets daily as a curricular class during the school day and receives 1.0 credit. Students must complete a brief playing audition to be considered for this class. ● Percussion Ensemble meets daily as a curricular class and receives 1.0 credit. Extra-curricular offerings ● Basketball Pep Band ● Indoor Drumline ● Solo & Ensemble ● Honor and All-State Bands

Does the marching band rehearse all year? No! There is a required band camp before school starts (Beginning of August) and then they rehearse on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:35-5:45pm, in addition to the 10 home and away Friday football games during the months of September and October. The class concludes with the Holiday in November. Remember, if you want to participate in marching band, you must register for the class separately from Symphonic Band or Percussion Ensembles .

Can I still take or with band? YES! The freshman orchestra and band are both scheduled during the same period and share students on an alternating schedule. Although not all meet during our band classes, choir students can usually be registered in a choir along with band.

W hy participate in the high school band program? Your child has invested three years beginning a musical journey that can continue for the rest of their lives. Band is not just a four year program – it continues through high school and beyond! The junior high only begins to tap the potential of what your child is capable of achieving. We often hear that students need to take a study hall in order to be successful in high school, eliminating the possibility of taking other terrific classes offered, such as band. Thorough research has shown that students who participate in the performing arts gain invaluable life skills such as time management, discipline, teamwork, and leadership, that are difficult to come by in more individually-oriented classes. They are also some of the highest achieving students in the school. The 2006 Valedictorian and Salutatorian and the 2009, 2011 & 2015 Valedictorian were all active four-year members of the PHS Bands ! and businesses give heavy consideration to students who are well-rounded in the arts. Many colleges also offer large scholarships for students to participate in their musical ensembles – without majoring in music. Band creates a family atmosphere for each student, giving him/her a place where he/she feels accepted and a strong sense of belonging! We hope you value what our program has to offer.

The PRIDE of Perrysburg! Every student involved in the Perrysburg Band Program takes great pride in what he/she represents. Through diligence, dedication and a commitment to excellence, the students continue to develop a program that continues to grow into one of the best programs in the state of Ohio. The directors want to welcome the new freshman class to the PHS band family and we hope each student takes advantage of everything the music program has to offer!
