Band Boosters

Meetings The Band Boosters meet the third Monday of every month in the Band Room (or Teacher’s Lounge) at Sanderson High School at 7:00 PM. Everyone is welcome. This is the best place to get the most up-to-date information on the band schedule, budget, fair share opportunities and event details.

Budget The SHS Band Programs are self-funded and operate on a budget close to $70,000. Our budget encompasses band camp, bus drivers, equipment, uniforms, staff members, competition entry fees, music copyrights, props, show design and much more. Our total budget is divided among the participants to derive at each student’s Fair Share Amount for the year.

Fair Share Opportunities We know that $875 is a large amount for any family. That’s why we have the payment schedule and a large variety of fundraising opportunities that are credited directly to the student’s account. New opportunities will be communicated throughout the year. The primary fundraisers are listed below:

1. Autobell Cards 6. Grocery Cards: Food Lion & 2. Fruit & Flowers Lowes Foods 3. GoPlaySave Books 7. NCSU Football Ushering 4. Goodberry’s Cards 8. Scrip 5. PDQ Cards 9. Walnut Creek Concession

These funds will roll over from year to year until the student graduates (or leaves Sanderson High School). Upon graduating, all funds remaining in the account can either be transferred to a sibling’s account that is currently in the band program or transferred into the band’s general account.

Ambassadors: A Band Ambassador is an experienced band parent who is there to help not only the incoming Freshman parents but also any new families in the Band Program. If you have a question, suggestion or concern, they are a good person to get in touch with.

Band Boosters: Band Boosters are the parents/guardians of the band students. We support the band with our time, talents and efforts in addition to our money. The Boosters is a 501 (c)(3) charitable organization and governed by the by-laws which can be found on the band website. The Band Boosters Board of Directors is comprised of the President, President-elect, Treasurer, Assistant Treasurer, Secretary, Marketing & Communications Chair, Hospitality Chair, Fundraising Chair, Marching Band Chair, and the Band Director. The business of the band is carried out by the Board and is discussed at each Band Boosters Meeting.

Band Boosters Meeting: The SHS Band Boosters meetings are held on the 3rd Monday of each month at 7:00 PM in the Band Room (or the Teacher’s Lounge). Everyone is encouraged to attend the meetings.

Band Buddies: Seniors choose first-year band buddies at camp each summer. It is a great way for the new students to have an older mentor to go to with band questions.

Banquet: The Banquet is held in May. This formal occasion is in honor of the band’s many accomplishments throughout the year. All family members are invited to dinner, an awards presentation and a slide show. This is always the highlight of a year of hard work.

Camp: Band Camp begins in July for 2 weeks followed by summer rehearsals until school begins. This is where the students learn the “show” that will be performed at competition and halftime at home football games.

Chaperones: Chaperones are one of the most important parts of Marching Band. They are needed for competitions, camp, , after school practices and football games. It’s a great way for parents to meet their student’s friends and to learn what band is all about.

Color Guard: The Color Guard is the group of student dancers that add “the color” to the show. These students spin, twirl, and toss flags and “weapons” (sabers and rifles) choreographed to the music and marching. Each year new team costumes and flags are designed to coordinate with the theme of the show. Competitions: A Band Competition is a performance and evaluation of the students’ marching abilities and musicianship. The band will compete in 4-5 competitions in the fall, traveling anywhere from 30 minutes to four hours away for a performance. The day begins with rehearsal and loading the truck at the school, arriving at the competition site, and concludes with an evening award ceremony for 15 to 20 bands. The buses will return to the school late in the night. Each competition offers the students a panel of judges and other high school bands to compete against. As the season progresses, new marching techniques are added to the show and the music reaches a higher level of understanding.

Concerts: There are four concerts for each band: a fall concert, a winter concert (followed by a reception), a Pre-MPA concert and a year-end spring concert (followed by a reception). The Wind Ensemble (and possibly the Concert Band) will also perform at MPA in March.

Concert Band: The Concert Band is the first level of band offered at Sanderson, consisting mainly of Freshman and Sophomores.

Directory: A band directory is available to each family in the Marching Band. The directory includes students’ names, parents’ names, phone numbers, addresses, emails and student grades and musical sections.

Drum Line: This is an instrumental section composed of snare, tenor, and bass drums.

Drum Major: The Drum Major is the student leader of the band who conducts the band during competitions, rehearsals and football games. The Drum Major is chosen through an interview and an audition process. Sophomores will audition for this position each spring and begin their Junior year as an assistant drum major. In their Senior year, they are promoted to the leadership position.

Etude Videos: For the Concert Band and Wind Ensemble, students are required to perform, video record and submit a weekly etude performance. These are graded and part of their cumulative quarterly grade.

EXPO: The Capital City Band Expo is Sanderson’s very own competition. This competition has been held annually for over 20 years on the 4th Saturday in October. There will be up to 20 bands marching in our stadium. This is our largest fundraiser. Profits from this huge event are used to buy instruments and uniforms thereby reducing Fair Share. Everyone is expected to volunteer!

EXPO T-shirt: A special t-shirt created for our EXPO competition each year. Students will need to purchase one, and it is highly recommended that parents and family members also purchase one as it is the apparel for the day of EXPO for students and volunteers. Fair Share: Fair Share is the student’s cost for participating in the Marching Band program each year. It is formulated by dividing the yearly operating budget by the number of students in the Band Program. The budget is a tally of all expenses (music, drill, instructors, camp, competitions, transportation, instruments, awards, banquet, supplies, insurance, communications, and other miscellaneous costs). The Fair Share for the 2021 Marching Band and Color Guard members is $875 with payments due from June to November. Fair Share can be paid by the family directly or earned through fundraising activities. Non-marching Band students, Percussion Ensemble students, and Winter Guard students have separate contracts and fee structures.

Fair Share Fundraising: There are many opportunities to “earn” your fair share each year. All the fundraising programs are optional. The SCRIP program and gift cards (Food Lion, Lowe’s Foods, Autobell Car Wash, PDQ, and Goodberry’s) are offered as a non-solicitation fundraising program. Walnut Creek and NCSU Football (ushering & ticket takers) are volunteer opportunities to earn an hourly credit towards the student’s account. Fruit & Flowers and the GoPlaySave coupon books are programs offered each year to sell products to your family and neighbors. Information about these fundraising opportunities is available throughout the year and can also be found on the website.

Friday Night Football Games: Band students play as a “pep” band at every home football game in uniform. The students also perform their show at halftime. Parents are asked to help load and move equipment to and from the field. Band Parents often sit together behind the band in the stadium. We are proud to say the best part of the evening is always the !

Futures Night: Futures Night is held on a selected football Friday. The middle students planning to attend Sanderson are invited to join the Marching Spartans on the field to perform The National Anthem. They also sit with the band during the game and play pep songs.

High Brass: This is an instrumental section composed of and (marching French horns.)

Low Brass: This is an instrumental section composed of trombones, baritones (marching ) and (marching ).

MPA: MPA is a concert festival attended by Wind Ensemble and may include the Concert Band. This is a judged concert that provides an opportunity for students and directors to receive a critical assessment of the quality of their performances by highly qualified experts in band performance.

Parades: The Marching Band participates in the Raleigh Christmas Parade in November. The students meet at the school, dress and take buses downtown. They usually return to the school around lunchtime to enjoy a potluck lunch hosted by parents.

Percussion Ensemble: The Percussion Ensemble is a group of band students who compete over weekends in February and March. The program is similar to Marching Band competitions but consists of percussion instruments. There is an additional charge for this program. Pit: This is an instrumental section composed of , , , chimes and . They are the only non-marching section of the band.

Pit Crew Parents: Each home football game and Marching Band competition requires a group of 10-12 parents to move the pit equipment on and off the field.

Prop Crew: There are new props built each year for the marching show. A group of 10-12 parents are needed to assemble and move the props at each game and competition. Moving props on and off the field is a timed event, which is part of the competition.

Rehearsals: All rehearsals are mandatory. Please schedule personal appointments so as not to conflict with scheduled rehearsal times. Please check the Band website calendar for all practice dates and times.

Show Shirt: This is a shirt that all band students are given each year that coincides with their “show” theme. These shirts are made available to purchase for parents and family members. It’s also a great way to find other Sanderson Band parents at the competitions throughout the season and support your students’ performances.

Spirit Rock: Sanderson High School’s Spirit Rock is often painted to celebrate birthdays and special events. The rock is in the student parking lot below the breezeway connecting the two buildings. Please drop off students here for Marching Band practices. Do not park in the area beside the band room.

Spring Musical: from the band provide the musical accompaniment for the SHS Theater Department’s spring musical production. This is an after-school activity that begins in February and concludes into late April.

Spring Trip: Traditionally the band program does a spring trip approximately every 2 years. The cost of the trip is an additional expense. Hence, the spring trip is optional for all students who participate in the band program. The fee for each student may be earned through the many available fundraising opportunities.

Student Leadership: Student Leaders are chosen through an interview process. Their leadership position is based on musical ability, maturity, commitment, work ethic, personal character, and a past band record. Roles and responsibilities are defined in the next section of the Marching Band Handbook.

Tom Krier Extra-Effort Scholarship Award: This award is given to an outstanding Senior who exemplifies all the qualities Tom Krier, a former Band Boosters president, gave to the band each year. Tom was a dedicated volunteer who loved the band and considered us all part of his family. This scholarship was created in July 2006 in his honor and is dedicated to the extra effort he shared with us over his seven years of service. Uniforms: There are two marching band uniforms for each student; one for football games and one for competitions. Students will be fitted and issued uniforms during band camp. The uniforms stay at school and are owned by the Marching Band. Students will wear their Show Shirts underneath along with shorts and black socks.

Website: www.sandersonband.com - Everything you need to know about the band program is located here!

Weeniehearsal: This is the kick-off meeting in May named for the hot dogs and the first (re)hearsal of the new marching band season. (You must have a “hearsal” before a rehearsal can take place.) This is also a time for rising Freshman parents to start to learn the ins and outs of the different facets of the Sanderson Marching Band Program.

Wind Ensemble: The Wind Ensemble is an audition-only band. Students may earn an honors credit for participating in the Wind Ensemble.

Winter Guard: The Winter Guard program is similar to the Color Guard except that the performances are held indoors without the Marching Band. The February and March competitions are graded on choreography and difficulty of the show, costumes and flags, and dance and drill maneuvers. There is an additional charge for this program.
