  • CBA Drum Tuning
Hello band directors! I know you’re in the throw of marching band season and I wanted to help you with an easy task to improve the overall sound of your ENTIRE ENSEMBLE! I’ve seen a few groups this year and wanted to share some information about tuning the marching percussion section. First: consider the size of your ensemble. If your group is smaller, choose smaller bass drum sizes. The bigger drums will drown our your wind section and affect the balance of your group. Second: Tune the drums on a regular basis! I know you tune your wind section every day. Same should go for the percussion section. Third: Tips and tricks -I’ve included a link to the Evans Drumheads tuning guide which has great information! http://www.evansdrumheads.com/upload/ EVBR_MPSG07_Marching_Percussion_Survival_Guide_12562.pdf -A few things to add to the link -I tune bass drums to a major triad ex. 28” C, 24” G, 22” C, 20” E and 18” G -This might differ slightly depending on your drum sizes, head combination etc. -Tuning a major triad makes split playing more melodic and unison stronger -Most groups I’ve seen this year had bass drums with TOO LOW of a tuning scheme. This creates a low rumble which lacks clarity and over balances the wind section. -Also make sure your bass drums have proper dampening. Too much “boom” will again over balance the winds and create a lack of clarity. The Evans MX series heads are a great start! Fourth: Front Ensemble -Tune for articulation, balance and sound quality -I tune concert bass drums to the same root pitch as the triad in the marching basses -Keep timpani in tune DAILY! Weather changes will affect the tuning drastically -give your student/staff time in the lot on show days to “clear” timpani heads Happy tuning and good luck with your season! • Michael Jackson's Gesamtkunstwerk
Liminalities: A Journal of Performance Studies Vol. 11, No. 5 (November 2015) Michael Jackson’s Gesamtkunstwerk: Artistic Interrelation, Immersion, and Interactivity From the Studio to the Stadium Sylvia J. Martin Michael Jackson produced art in its most total sense. Throughout his forty-year career Jackson merged art forms, melded genres and styles, and promoted an ethos of unity in his work. Jackson’s mastery of combined song and dance is generally acknowledged as the hallmark of his performance. Scholars have not- ed Jackson’s place in the lengthy soul tradition of enmeshed movement and mu- sic (Mercer 39; Neal 2012) with musicologist Jacqueline Warwick describing Jackson as “embodied musicality” (Warwick 249). Jackson’s colleagues have also attested that even when off-stage and off-camera, singing and dancing were frequently inseparable for Jackson. James Ingram, co-songwriter of the Thriller album hit “PYT,” was astonished when he observed Jackson burst into dance moves while recording that song, since in Ingram’s studio experience singers typically conserve their breath for recording (Smiley). Similarly, Bruce Swedien, Jackson’s longtime studio recording engineer, told National Public Radio, “Re- cording [with Jackson] was never a static event. We used to record with the lights out in the studio, and I had him on my drum platform. Michael would dance on that as he did the vocals” (Swedien ix-x). Surveying his life-long body of work, Jackson’s creative capacities, in fact, encompassed acting, directing, producing, staging, and design as well as lyri- cism, music composition, dance, and choreography—and many of these across genres (Brackett 2012).

Village of Hall and District Progress Association Inc. Annual Report 2009 – 2010 INTRODUCTION Committee members are asked from time to time ‘what does the Progress Association do?’ Our Annual Reports seek to answer this question. In short, we have managed the Hall and district website (hall.act.au) and the Rural Fringe, partnered with government in planning and developing around a million dollars worth of community facilities, won and managed two government projects – one ACT and one Commonwealth – each worth around $10,000, initiated a Men’s Shed, made significant gains in recognition, conservation and interpretation of Hall and district heritage, staged a very popular twilight Concert by the Hall Village Brass Band, supported the National Sheep Dog Trials, and taken on the organization of the Hall School Centenary in 2011. Endeavours such as these are in addition to the on-going task of maintaining relationships with local MLA’s and representing the interests of the Hall and district community to the ACT government on a whole range of matters. MEMBERS As well as maintaining the Rural Fringe and the community website as community services, we circulate periodic email updates to members on forthcoming events, and important issues. We also respond to a steady stream of requests for information. Lacking a reliable source of surplus income, the Association is not a funding body as such. We nevertheless made contributions to the community dinner during the Sheep Dog Trials (paying for the Band) , and a special grant to the Hall Village Brass Band to enable them to acquire uniforms. The Band is one of our many valued affiliated organizations.
