STYLISTIC EVOLUTION OF JAZZ DRUMMER ED BLACKWELL: THE CULTURAL INTERSECTION OF NEW ORLEANS AND WEST AFRICA David J. Schmalenberger Research Project submitted to the College of Creative Arts at West Virginia University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Musical Arts in Percussion/World Music Philip Faini, Chair Russell Dean, Ph.D. David Taddie, Ph.D. Christopher Wilkinson, Ph.D. Paschal Younge, Ed.D. Division of Music Morgantown, West Virginia 2000 Keywords: Jazz, Drumset, Blackwell, New Orleans Copyright 2000 David J. Schmalenberger ABSTRACT Stylistic Evolution of Jazz Drummer Ed Blackwell: The Cultural Intersection of New Orleans and West Africa David J. Schmalenberger The two primary functions of a jazz drummer are to maintain a consistent pulse and to support the soloists within the musical group. Throughout the twentieth century, jazz drummers have found creative ways to fulfill or challenge these roles. In the case of Bebop, for example, pioneers Kenny Clarke and Max Roach forged a new drumming style in the 1940’s that was markedly more independent technically, as well as more lyrical in both time-keeping and soloing. The stylistic innovations of Clarke and Roach also helped foster a new attitude: the acceptance of drummers as thoughtful, sensitive musical artists. These developments paved the way for the next generation of jazz drummers, one that would further challenge conventional musical roles in the post-Hard Bop era. One of Max Roach’s most faithful disciples was the New Orleans-born drummer Edward Joseph “Boogie” Blackwell (1929-1992). Ed Blackwell’s playing style at the beginning of his career in the late 1940’s was predominantly influenced by Bebop and the drumming vocabulary of Max Roach.

  • Rock Album Discography Last Up-Date: September 27Th, 2021
Rock Album Discography Last up-date: September 27th, 2021 Rock Album Discography “Music was my first love, and it will be my last” was the first line of the virteous song “Music” on the album “Rebel”, which was produced by Alan Parson, sung by John Miles, and released I n 1976. From my point of view, there is no other citation, which more properly expresses the emotional impact of music to human beings. People come and go, but music remains forever, since acoustic waves are not bound to matter like monuments, paintings, or sculptures. In contrast, music as sound in general is transmitted by matter vibrations and can be reproduced independent of space and time. In this way, music is able to connect humans from the earliest high cultures to people of our present societies all over the world. Music is indeed a universal language and likely not restricted to our planetary society. The importance of music to the human society is also underlined by the Voyager mission: Both Voyager spacecrafts, which were launched at August 20th and September 05th, 1977, are bound for the stars, now, after their visits to the outer planets of our solar system (mission status: https://voyager.jpl.nasa.gov/mission/status/). They carry a gold- plated copper phonograph record, which comprises 90 minutes of music selected from all cultures next to sounds, spoken messages, and images from our planet Earth. There is rather little hope that any extraterrestrial form of life will ever come along the Voyager spacecrafts. But if this is yet going to happen they are likely able to understand the sound of music from these records at least.

N.A.R. HASLEWOOD SADMAN RECORDS NEWS 63 SADMAN RECORDS AUCTION CLOSING: MONDAY, November 2nd 2020 P.O. BOX 1413 LEICESTER LE2 8ZE U.K. TEL: (0044) 0116 270 6325 MOBILE: (0044) 07968 327155 E-MAIL: [email protected] www.sadmanrecords.com Welcome to Sadman Records News 63. Again, there is a mixture of set-price and auction items. As usual, the set-price records can be ordered, paid for and sent to you now. Alternatively, the set-price items can be reserved and paid for at a later date, either when the auction closes or put aside and collected from an upcoming record fair (see below). Again, there is no LP auction this time; instead there is a larger modern jazz set-price list. Finally, I need to point out that 2020 may well be the last year that I send out such large lists. I am aiming to at least partially retire by the end of the year. This means that I want to sell large quantities of my remaining stock. I have now managed to sell most of my excess stock of 78s. However, if you, or anyone you know, are interested in buying a quantity of LPs, please get in touch. SEE YOU AT THE RECORD FAIR: For the first time for as long as I can remember, this regular feature of our lists is a blank. This is, of course, not through any dimunition in our enthusiam for such events but as a result of the current crisis we are all living through. At present the Utrecht Fair in November is still pencilled in but I fear, in the end, this event will go the same way as the one that should have been held in April.
