This meeting is very special to University Malaya and its Medical Center as Cardiothoracic Surgery has come a full circle back to where the first ever open heart surgery was performed in 1975. I am sure this meeting will also bring back fond memories to many of our senior local doctors, as many were graduates from this prestigious university. ‘Back to Basics and Beyond’ is the theme of this year’s meeting. We believe that there is a need to refresh basic knowledge of our specialty so that we can improve care and treatment to our patients. This year’s proceeding will prove to be an exciting and invaluable three-day gathering of local, regional and international medical care givers, covering issues of care for both adults and children with heart and lung diseases. We have invited experts, world class researchers and delegates consisting not only of surgeons and physicians, but perfusionists, nurses, rehabilitation specialists, physiotherapists and nutritionists to address issues related to the care of these patients. We have planned three pre-congress sessions. The first session will encompass post-graduate cardiothoracic surgery course conducted in collaboration with experts from the United Kingdom, to look at the need of our young doctors. The second and third are sessions covering the basic and advances of cardiothoracic critical care and cardiopulmonary bypass for doctors, nurses and perfusionists, who are the key players in the care of our patients. We are excited to have also invited one of University Malaya’s original pioneering cardiac ‘team member’ surgeon to talk at the Razali Hashim Memorial Lecture. Nobody will be left out during our meeting and we hope, at the end of this meeting, to make a difference in helping our delegates go home with a different attitude towards their work generally and improvement in the care of their patients. The activities will be conducted in a relax atmosphere of the award winning Tropical Golf Retreat of The Saujana at the start of our children’s long school holidays, just minutes away from the bustling and exciting Kuala Lumpur. There will be Golf clinics for newbies, children and experience golfers, tours to the City and surrounding places such as Shah Alam Mosque, Jugra Palace and the romantic Port Kelang and surrounding Islands. The Gala Dinner and Charity Event will be held at the prestigious and famous Dewan Tunku Chancellor in the green campus ground of the University Malaya itself. We are proud to announce that The Chancellor of University Malaya, HRH Sultan Azlan Shah of Perak, has agreed to grace the event accompanied by the Pro Chancellors and their spouses. We will be entertained by the UM Combo orchestra, famous singers and comedians. The proceeds from this event will go to the MATCVS and UMMC cardiac surgery funds to provide financial support to our young doctors to pursue further training, and also help patients to obtain the best medical care possible at University Malaya Medical Centre. We are confident that this meeting will become a new standard for our Society’s future meetings.     20 NOV 2001 Agong-Critical KING IN CRITICAL CONDITION BUT STABLE, ISTANA NEGARA SAYS KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 20 (Bernama) -- The Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah, who is being treated further at the Gleneagles Intan medical centre here, is in critical condition but is still stable, an Istana Negara statement said today. "According to medical specialists treating his majesty, the King is now in critical condition and requires intensive care. However his majesty is still stable," said the statement signed by Istana Negara coordinator Datuk Ishak Ahmad. Sultan Salahuddin is undergoing further treatment at the medical centre since Sunday upon being treated for almost two months at the Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore. "Let us all Malaysians pray to God the Almighty for his majesty's well-being and recovery," the statement said. According to the statement, Sultan Azlan Shah of Perak and the Raja Permaisuri of Perak Tuanku Bainun, the Raja Muda of Perak and the King's son the Regent of Selangor were among the Malay Rulers who visited his majesty today. Yesterday's visitors include the Deputy Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin and Permaisuri Nur Zahirah, the Yang Dipertuan Besar Negeri Sembilan Tuanku Ja'afar and Tuanku Ampuan Najihah, the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad and wife Datin Seri Dr Siti Hasmah Mohamed Ali. The Menteri Besar of Selangor Datuk Seri Dr Mohamad Khir Toyo and wife Datin Zaharah Kechik had also visited the King. His majesty continued to receive a stream of visitors up till late afternoon, including members of the royalty notably his younger brother Tengku Besar Putra Azam and the Tengku Mahkota of Pahang Tengku Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah.

    4. Malaysia Dagmar Hellmann-Rajanayagam* I. Introduction Malaysia has become one of the major political players in the South-East Asian region with increasing economic weight. Even after the economic crisis of 1997–98, despite defence budgets having been slashed, the country is still deter- mined to continue to modernize and upgrade its armed forces. Malaysia grappled with the communist insurgency between 1948 and 1962. It is a democracy with a strong government, marked by ethnic imbalances and affirmative policies, strict controls on public debate and a nascent civil society. Arms procurement is dominated by the military. Public apathy and indifference towards defence matters have been a noticeable feature of the society. Public opinion has disregarded the fact that arms procurement decision making is an element of public policy making as a whole, not only restricted to decisions relating to military security. An examination of the country’s defence policy- making processes is overdue. This chapter inquires into the role, methods and processes of arms procure- ment decision making as an element of Malaysian security policy and the public policy-making process. There is also the issue of the missing Judges' Code of Ethics 2008, which we have yet to see. There are several short-comings with the bill. The first is that there is no procedure for lodging a complaint against a judge. The literature highlights the importance of community engagement in conservation programmes. Principally, the involvement of young people is necessary to facilitate heritage management programmes. The readiness of youth to engage can be measured from their awareness and willingness to participate. For this study, we administered questionnaire surveys to 175 respondents from three secondary schools in Lenggong. The results revealed a low level of awareness and a lack of willingness for participation. In addition, the findings suggest an uncertain correlation between awareness and willingness for participation among youth. The old shop houses testify in the uniqueness and diversity of the nation’s architectural gems, which were shaped by the Malay, Chinese and British entities. The current study attempts to understand the influence of varying entities towards the architectural identities that the old shop houses’ facade bear. Purposive sampling of 16 towns in the state of Perak was made to gauge information on the earliest row of shop houses at each of the towns. Both secondary and primary data were then leveraged based on documents analysis, interviews and measured drawings to explore the relationship link between the entities and identities through the old shop houses’ facade design. The findings suggest that there is a relationship between the entities and identities, in the sense that the early entities were influential in determining the identities of the old shop houses’ facade design. Interestingly, the Malay style was found to be the most dominant identity depicted by the facade design of the old shophouses from the 16 towns of Perak. IGPDD questionnaire aimed to measure the learning styles of Form 2 students. Fundamental theoretical construction covers five aspects. IGPDD is produced by Model Dunn and Dunn Learning Styles. IGPDD contains 60 positive items which is divided into five sub-scale of the sub- scale 1: Environment (12 items), subscale 2: Emotions (12 items), subscale 3: Sociology (12 items), subscale 4: Physiology (12 items) subscale 5: Psychology (12 items). IGPDD content validity evaluated by nine experts comprising academics of lecturers from the Faculty of Guidance and Counseling, Sultan Idris Education University, Tanjung Malim, Perak, school counselors and school teachers . IGPDD gained high validity for overall which is 8.35 (83.5%) and for sub scale of Environment (80.1 %) , Emotion :8.16 (81.6 %) , Sociology :7.91 (79.1 %) , Physiology :8.55 (85.5 %) and Psychology 9.18 (91.8 %).

    2016 ANNUAL REPORT BUILDING RESILIENCE • EMPOWERING COMMUNITIES Cover Rationale This year our theme is ‘Resilience’ to give tribute to the various ways in which humans survive and strive through adverse time, such as natural disasters or conict. Surviving and striving through such events however requires a helping hand, that is where MERCY Malaysia plays a signicant role. Through various projects we aim to transfer expert knowledge, skills, provide necessary materials and equipment to enhance communities resilience against the disasters they face. One such project in 2016, which is depicted on the cover, took place in Sierra Leone, West Africa. Sierra Leone was crippled for several months by the Ebola virus, rapidly spreading amongst communities and killing thousands. Although communities showed great strength and courage in ghting the virus, the high level of poverty and lack of sanitation facilities in rural communities made some eorts eeting. Thereby, MERCY Malaysia decided to provide communities with assistance through the activities of building wells, delivering hygiene kits and educating students from 100 schools about hygiene and health, with the objective of increasing the communities’ resilience through the transfer of knowledge and provision of essential sanitation items.
