Date: In letter 277, of Sunday, 29 October, Van Gogh writes: This week I received a letter from Rappard (l. 29). The present letter must have been an immediate response to that one from Van Rappard: Van Gogh had received the letter just now (l. 2). If he had received it on Saturday Van Gogh would have said yesterday in his letter to Theo, so it probably came a little earlier. But since we cannot know this for sure, we take on or about Friday, 27 October 1882 to be the terminus post quem. Based on the words this week, the earliest date would seem to be Monday, 23 October, but we assume that Van Rappards question about the monogram FD (see l. 88) refers to letter 273 with the list of monograms, which dates from on or about 22 October, so that the letter from Van Rappard probably dates from a little later in the week. The exact date cannot be established, so we give on or about 24 October 1882 as the earliest possible date.

1 As requested, Van Rappard2 sent Van Gogh a list of (duplicate) prints; he would also have told him which illustrated magazines he subscribed to (cf. l. 48 and letters 267 and 268). 3 Van Rappard4 must have written about the illustrated book That beautiful wretch. A Brighton story by William Black5 (New York 1881). This light-hearted novel is set in middle-class circles in and around the resort of Brighton. Vivacious and intelligent Anne (Nan) Beresford falls in love with Lieutenant Frank King. At first she feels a strong urge to be independent, but in the end they marry. Van Gogh later mentions several prints from this book; see letter 311, nn. 8 and 9.

It contains illustrations to the novel They were married! by Walter Besant9 and James Rice10, among them designs by Richard Caton Woodville (ii)11 the picture on the cover, engraved by William James Palmer12 (Ill. 1961), also on p. 16 and by Davidson Knowles13, such as Maude and Virginie examining old prints at the towers, engraved by Richard14 and Edward Taylor15 (p. 28). The print was also included in LUnivers Illustr 25 (20 May 1882), p. 313; Van Gogh may have had the engraving from this magazine, since he also had Une route Hong Kong (A road in Hong Kong) by Edward Hildebrandt19 from the issue of LUnivers Illustr that preceded it (t*647). 20 William Small21, In the park (source unknown most probably ). Ill. 945. A print by Eugne Fromentin49 appeared in Harpers Weekly 25 (for the week ending Sept. 3, 1881), pp. 600-601. 50 Possibly a print after the drawing Dans les dunes de Scheveningen (In the dunes at Scheveningen) 1848 (present whereabouts unknown). See Franken and Obreen 1894, p. 19, cat. no. 107. Cf. also cat. nos. 104a-107a. It is also possible that this refers to Rochussen51s lithograph Een landschap met figuren (A landscape with figures) which had been in Kunstkronijk 12 (1851), between pp. 8 and 9. Ill. 1287. 52 Albert Gustaf Aristides Edelfelt53, Chez lartiste (At the artists), engraved by Charles Baude54 after the painting with the same title at the Salon of 1881, in Le Monde Illustr 25 (17 September 1881), p. 181. Ill. 90. 55 Merry Christmas is listed on the same line as the name Edelfelt56, but no work with this title has been found in his oeuvre. Van Gogh probably meant Charles Stanley Reinhart57, Merry Christmas to you, old barebones!, engraved by Frank French58, in Harpers Weekly 26 (16 December 1882), pp. 800-801. Ill. 1257. Moreover, the words A Merry Christmas are found on Francis Wilfred Lawson59, Children of the great city, in The Graphic 15 (14 April 1877), p. 337; there is one copy of this in the estate. Ill. 1968. The print may originally have been in The Illustrated London News, because various prints went from there to LUnivers Illustr. It is noteworthy that in the present letter Van Gogh refers to several other engravings from volume 24 of LUnivers Illustr in other words, he may have translated the title into English himself. 70 The title Christmas hymn is too general for the print to be identified. Since Van Rappard87 gave the title in German, he probably saw it in a German magazine. 88 It is not clear which print Van Rappard89 meant by Hubert von Herkomer90s Schwierigkeiten (Hardships). 107 This was in March 1881: see letter 164. 108 In volume 24 of LUnivers Illustr (1881) each month there was a print by Montbard109 with the current month as its subject. The engravings are on pp. 5, 84, 148, 244, 293, 372, 437, 540, 621, 669, 756 and 885. The month illustrated is March. Disturbed Ireland: A visit from Rory of the hills; engraved by William James Palmer123, in The Illustrated London News 78 (22 January 1881), pp. 80-81. Ill. 1428. The commentary talks about nocturnal visits (p. 82). 124 The estate has seven prints by Richard Caton Woodville (ii)125, all from The Illustrated London News 76-78 (1880-1881). Six sheets have Ireland as their subject, namely, in the series The State of Ireland: Scene outside the courthouse, Galway, in The Illustrated London News 76 (14 February 1880), p. 153 (Ill. 1973) (t*181), Serving a process near Headford Galway (t*820) and Women carrying home meal-sacks from the relief, in The Illustrated London News 77 (20 November 1880), p. 497 (Ill. 1974) (t*183); and also Irish sketches: a fishermans cabin in Connemara (t*182), An Irish obstructionist. A sketch on the road, Connemara, in The Illustrated London News 76 (21 February 1880), p. 169 (Ill. 1975) (t*819) and A private shave in County Galway (t*570). In addition, in letter 278 Van Gogh mentions The State of Ireland: Distributing relief tickets in the turf-market, Westport, County Mayo . 126 The estate has five prints after the work of Aloysius OKelly127, all on political Irish subjects. OKelly worked for The Illustrated London News as a special artist during the Irish Land War in the 1880s; some of his designs were engraved by Frank Dadd128. Three come from the series La ligue agraire en Irlande (The Irish Land League), engraved by William Michael Roberts Quick129: Dsarmement des habitants dun district en tat de sige ; Prison de Kilmainham, Dublin (Disarming the inhabitants of a district under siege; Kilmainham Prison, Dublin) (t*216) and Labourage de la terre dun fermier emprisonn (Working the land of an imprisoned farmer) (Ill. 1981) (t*449). They appeared in LUnivers Illustr 24 (18 June 1881). Two are from the series LOuverture de la session du tribunal agraire en Irlande (The opening of the session of the Irish Land Tribunal): Une propritaire venant au tribunal sous la protection de la police (A landowner comes to court under police protection) (t*33) and Une sance du tribunal Claremorris (A session of the Claremorris court) (t*35); engraved by Tilly130, from LIllustration 78 (3 December 1881), pp. 368-369. Ill. 1982. The last two prints were also in The Illustrated London News 79 (26 November 1881), pp. 525 (t*214), 528. Cf. Niamh OSullivan, Painters and illustrators: Aloysius OKelly and Vincent van Gogh, Irish Arts Review 14 (1998), pp. 134-139; see also n. 53 below. 131 The estate has 15 prints by Edward John Gregory132, all from The Graphic (1870-1875); but none has an Irish subject. 133 The estate has 12 prints by Frank Dadd134 on Irish themes. Some of them were engraved after designs by Aloysius OKelly135; sometimes there were prints by both artists on the same page. The wood engravings date from 1880-1881 and most are from The Illustrated London News, among them Posting the government proclamation in Connemara; engraved by Richard136 and Edward Taylor137, in The Illustrated London News 79 (19 November 1881), p. 493. Ill. 1976. (t*568). Van Gogh also had Tenanciers consultant leur cur from LIllustration 78 (3 December 1881), p. 368 (t*33) as Consulting the priest: A sketch at Claremorris, County Mayo, in The Illustrated London News 79 (26 November 1881), p. 525. Ill. 1977. (t*214). See also n. 51 above. 138 This rubbish dump was near to the gasworks, so just behind N.W. Binnensingel. 144 In 1881 odd issues of The Illustrated London News cost sixpence (then 0.30 guilders); a current volume in odd issues would thus cost 15.60 guilders. 145 The butcher Louis Vincent Royer146 and his wife Franoise Virginie Seynave147 had a Boucherie modle et bouillon at 15-17 rue Chapeliers (SAB). 148 No drawing of a soup distribution to the poor is known from this period. 149 The Walloon quarter of Brussels was named after place des Wallons, which had been there since the Middle Ages, close to rue Haute and rue Blaes; although the square no longer existed after 1853, the district kept its name. 150 Old man with an umbrella seen from the back (F - / JH 214), letter sketch in letter 268. 151 William Lionel Wyllie152, The funeral of the Late Prince Louis Napoleon, in The Graphic 20 (19 July 1879), p. 49 (cover). Translation [1r:1] My dear friend Rappard153, I just received your letter and its precisely as I intended. Now I have a rough idea about this and that, and when an opportunity arises I can try to find something to add.154 First of all That beautiful wretch,156 I do NOT have it and is surely very beautiful, and Id be delighted to have it if possible. Today or tomorrow Ill send you the Holiday No. 82, which has very beautiful illustrations by Caton Woodville159, Knowles160 161 &c.163 Together with the following prints. 153 Anthon Gerard Alexander, ridder van Rappard (1858-1892) Dutch artist 154 As requested, Van Rappard155 sent Van Gogh a list of (duplicate) prints; he would also have told him which illustrated magazines he subscribed to (cf. l. 48 and letters 267 and 268). 156 Van Rappard157 must have written about the illustrated book That beautiful wretch. A Brighton story by William Black158 (New York 1881). 8 and 9.

159 Richard Caton Woodville (II) (1856-1927) English artist 160 Davidson Knowles (fl. 1879-1902) American artist 161 Very probably the American artist Davidson Knowles162. 163 Van Gogh means the 48-page Holiday Number of The Illustrated London News which according to an ad- vertisement in the 24 June number (p. 606) had appeared on 27 June 1882. It contains illustrations to the novel They were married! by Walter Besant164 and James Rice165, among them designs by Richard Caton Woodville (ii)166 the picture on the cover, engraved by William James Palmer167 (Ill. 1961), also on p. 16 and by Davidson Knowles168, such as Maude and Virginie examining old prints at the towers, engraved by Richard169 and Edward Taylor170 (p. 28). Ill. 1962. Ill. 1049. The print was also included in LUnivers Illustr 25 (20 May 1882), p. 313; Van Gogh may have had the engraving from this magazine, since he also had Une route Hong Kong (A road in Hong Kong) by Edward Hildebrandt175 from the issue of LUnivers Illustr that preceded it (t*647). 176 William Small (1843-1929) English artist 177 William Small178, In the park (source unknown most probably The Graphic). Robinson183, The romance of a rescue, engraved by Joseph Swain184, in The Illustrated London News 65 (16 December 1874), Christmas number, p. 12. It is an illustration for the story The romance of a rescue by W.W. Fenn. Ill. 1283 (t*409). The title could also refer to C. Robinson, The Troedyrhiw colliery accident: Rescued!, in The Illustrated London News 70 (28 April 1877), p. 385. Ill. 1965. (t*686). Ill. 1265. 192 Given that Van Gogh cites several prints from volume 24 of LUnivers Illustr, among them Overend193s Le th dans la serre (see n. 27 below), here he probably means the anonymous portrait engraving George Washington, premier prsident des tas-Unis dAmrique (George Washington, first president of the United States of America) in LUnivers Illustr 24 (8 October 1881), pp. 688-689. Ill. 502. 194 William Heysham Overend (1851-1898) English artist 195 William Heysham Overend196, Hopes and fears, in Harpers Weekly 25 (for the week ending December 17, 1881), Extra supplement, p. 860. See Franken and Obreen 1894, p. 19, cat. no. 107. Cf. also cat. nos. 104a-107a. It is also possible that this refers to Rochussen218s lithograph Een landschap met figuren (A landscape with figures) which had been in Kunstkronijk 12 (1851), between pp. 8 and 9. Merry Christmas is listed on the same line as the name Edelfelt224, but no work with this title has been found in his oeuvre. Van Gogh probably meant Charles Stanley Reinhart225, Merry Christmas to you, old barebones!, engraved by Frank French226, in Harpers Weekly 26 (16 December 1882), pp. 800-801. Ill. 1257. Moreover, the words A Merry Christmas are found on Francis Wilfred Lawson227, Children of the great city, in The Graphic 15 (14 April 1877), p. 337; there is one copy of this in the estate. The print may originally have been in The Illustrated London News, because various prints went from there to LUnivers Illustr. It is noteworthy that in the present letter Van Gogh refers to several other engravings from volume 24 of LUnivers Illustr in other words, he may have translated the title into English himself. 242 The title Christmas hymn is too general for the print to be identified. Cf. in this connection [Anonymous], Christmas in Canada Amateur carol singing at Longueuil on the St. Lawrence, in The Graphic 14 (30 December 1876), p. 645. 243 William Heysham Overend (1851-1898) English artist 244 W.H. What greatly interests me is Buckman260, In front of the shelter if its from a magazine from this year, let me know which and Ill order it. I dont know what it is, but I know his work and find it splendid I imagine that his treatment of this subject is extraordinarily beautiful.261 Herkomer264, Hardships265 is also unknown to me. Overend268, Divine Service North Pole269 Morin271, Rgamey272,273 Boulanger276 277 on your last list also. If the boat race by a draughtsman you dont know is one with, in the foreground, a part of a boat in which there are a lady in black, a lady in white and a dog, then its by none other than Paul Renouard279 .280 I also have for you a splendid thing by Dagnan283 , A bird charmer in the Tuileries Gardens,284 and one by Montbard287, Arab beggars.288 These two were slightly torn, but Ive restored and mounted them. Theyre both very large, and Im not sending them now because the parcel would be so big if I sent them flat, for they can no longer be folded. When theres an opportunity next time you come here, at some point, you could take them with you like last summer. But since theyre French, you may already have them. In that case, Ill keep them. Theyre both particularly beautiful. Let me know if you dont have them and Ill keep them apart for you. [1v:3] of the chest, Ventnor, in The Graphic 19 (28 June 1879), pp. 624-625. Van Gogh evidently managed to get hold of it, because there is a copy in the estate. Ill. 660 (t*143). Since Van Rappard263 gave the title in German, he probably saw it in a German magazine. 264 Hubert von Herkomer (1849-1914) English artist 265 It is not clear which print Van Rappard266 meant by Hubert von Herkomer267s Schwierigkeiten (Hardships). The graphic work after Herkomer includes various examples of poor people who have a hard time of it. Cf. Lee MacCormick Edwards, Herkomer. A Victorian artist. Aldershot 1999. It may be the German version of In trouble. This is the title of an original etching published by Maison Goupil (Bordeaux, Muse Goupil). Ill. 180. Ive again given some thought to your scruples about accepting those I sent and, while I respect your feelings, I still believe you shouldnt see it as a kindness by me but as something natural. For this reason. I hope you have no objection to my regarding you as a friend, and you in turn will regard me in the same way. And for my part I believe that youll agree with me in regarding a friendship as having to be an act above all, not just a feeling. Consequently, its entirely natural that, of my own accord, I reserved a few things for you that I had in duplicate and you didnt yet have. You, for your part, in Brussels for example, did me a favour when I was able to make use of your studio when I didnt yet have one, and so on.291 You write that you have 7 months of Montbard292; if you let me know which I may be able to complete them.293 I see that I also have two beautiful Staniland295s,296 which Im adding, and one by Dollmann298.299 I would have to see the monogram FD301 or whatever it is to see whether I could decipher it from the way it was done. It wouldnt surprise me if it was F. Dadd303 . Next, I cant decipher the monogram under the Arrival of the coach.304 But Ive found another sketch from Scotland which also has it, Salmon fishers.307 Caton Woodville309 is extraordinarily clever I see that more and more in addition to what you have, Nightly visit,310 I have more large things from Ireland by him,313 which form a series

291 This was in March 1881: see letter 164. 292 Charles Auguste Loye (G. Montbard) (1841-1905) French artist 293 In volume 24 of LUnivers Illustr (1881) each month there was a print by Montbard294 with the current month as its subject. The engravings are on pp. 5, 84, 148, 244, 293, 372, 437, 540, 621, 669, 756 and 885. The month illustrated is March. Ill. 1177. 295 Charles Joseph Staniland (1838-1916) English artist 296 There are five prints by Charles Joseph Staniland297 in the estate: Landing fish at Billingsgate market , in The Illustrated London News 79 (12 November 1881), p. 484 (two copies: t*438 and t*595); The war, waiting at Le Mans for a train to Tours , in The Illustrated London News 57 (22 October 1870), p. 421 (t*596); The Risca colliery explosion The two widows, 1860 and 1880 , in The Graphic 22 (31 July 1880), p. 116 (t*135); and The land agitation in Ireland The widow and the assassin , in The Graphic 23 (1 January 1881), p. 4 (t*561). 298 John Charles Dollmann (1851-1934) English artist 299 In the estate there are two prints by John Charles Dollmann300, The distress in Ireland The Duke of Edinburgh and the officers of the relief squadron visiting the sick off the West Coast, in The Graphic 21 (15 May 1880), p. 496 (t*220), Ill. 1983, and London sketches, an opium den at East End (see letter 235, n. 38). 301 Frank Dadd302 indeed frequently signed with the monogram FD, but there were several other artists who also signed with these two letters. See Peter Nahum, Monograms of Victorian & Edwardian artists. Salisbury 1976, p. 97. 303 Frank Dadd (1851-1929) English artist 304 Below the print is John McL. Ralston305s monogram J.Mc.L.R. Sketches in Scotland: Arrival of the coach at the Fife Arms, Braemar; engraved by Joseph Swain306, in The Illustrated London News 77 (2 October 1880), p. 341. Ill. 1971. See also letter 359. The wood engraving also appeared as La saison de voyages Un relais de diligences en Ecosse in LUnivers Illustr 24 (16 July 1881), p. 501. This version is in the estate (t*650). 307 John McL. Ralston308, Sketches in Braemar: Salmon-spearing on the Dee, in The Illustrated London News 77 (6 November 1880), p. 452. Ill. 1972. 309 Richard Caton Woodville (II) (1856-1927) English artist 310 Van Goghs description large things from Ireland refers to Richard Caton Woodville311s double-page engraving Disturbed Ireland: A visit from Rory of the hills; engraved by William James Palmer312, in The Illustrated London News 78 (22 January 1881), pp. 80-81. Ill. 1428. The commentary talks about nocturnal visits (p. 82). 313 The estate has seven prints by Richard Caton Woodville (ii)314, all from The Illustrated London News 76-78 (1880-1881). To Anthon van Rappard. The Hague, between about Tuesday, 24 and about Friday, 27 October 1882. 13 together with others by OKelly315 316 and Gregory321 322 and Dadd324 .325 [1r:4] Well, today I paid a visit to the place where the dustmen bring the rubbish &c.330 By Jove, how splendid that was for Buckman332 , for example. Tomorrow Ill get some interesting objects from the rubbish dump, including broken lamp-posts, to view or to pose if you like, rusting and twisted the dustman is going to bring them. It was something out of a fairy tale by Andersen333, that collection of discarded buckets, baskets, kettles, soldiers mess-tins, oil-cans, wire, lamp-posts, stovepipes...334 Ill no doubt dream of it tonight, but above all Ill work there this winter. If you ever come to The Hague, I would very much welcome taking you there and to a couple of other spots which, although as humble as could be, are a paradise for an artist. And now a drawing has been waiting for me for some time and I really must set to work on it. So youll shortly receive some more prints. And if you have any duplicates, you know I would be very pleased to have them. Adieu may your work prosper dont you think the weather is splendid these days? Really Chill October.336 How beautiful the mire is, and the withering grass. With a handshake in thought. Ever yours, Vincent You would find a great deal changed in my studio since last summer its much more roomy and efficient. And I hope the work is none the worse. 3.50 guilders for a volume of the London News is perhaps not exorbitant if its an interesting old one with a lot in it, but everything depends on the contents of course.338 [2r:5]

315 Aloysius O’Kelly (1853-1892) Irish artist 316 The estate has five prints after the work of Aloysius OKelly317, all on political Irish subjects. OKelly worked for The Illustrated London News as a special artist during the Irish Land War in the 1880s; some of his designs were engraved by Frank Dadd318. Three come from the series La ligue agraire en Irlande (The Irish Land League), engraved by William Michael Roberts Quick319: Dsarmement des habitants dun district en tat de sige ; Prison de Kilmainham, Dublin (Disarming the inhabitants of a district under siege; Kilmainham Prison, Dublin) (t*216) and Labourage de la terre dun fermier emprisonn (Working the land of an imprisoned farmer) (Ill. 1981) (t*449). Do you remember the soup kitchens in Brussels? Among others, Royer339 opened one340 close to the town hall that winter and I saw the opening, when early in the morning soup was given free to poor folk. I remembered that lately, and this is the drawing Im working on at the moment.343 Ive had models from Geest here a street which in my view strongly resembles rue Haute or rue Blaes in the Walloon quarter of Brussels, for example.344 And then what Im looking for, of course, is certainly the right types, but much more than that the sentiment of the whole. Whether a free soup place is in Brussels, in London or in The Hague, its character is always rather like what Buckman345 certainly has in In front of the shelter. The figure I sketched in my last letter is, among other things, a model for that.346 What is Wyllie347, Funeral of the late Napoleon? 348

issues would thus cost 15.60 guilders. 339 Louis Vincent Royer (1831-1882) butcher in Brussels 340 The butcher Louis Vincent Royer341 and his wife Franoise Virginie Seynave342 had a Boucherie modle et bouillon at 15-17 rue Chapeliers (SAB). 343 No drawing of a soup distribution to the poor is known from this period. 344 The Walloon quarter of Brussels was named after place des Wallons, which had been there since the Middle Ages, close to rue Haute and rue Blaes; although the square no longer existed after 1853, the district kept its name. 345 Edwin Buckman (Buckmann) (1841-1930) English artist 346 Old man with an umbrella seen from the back (F - / JH 214), letter sketch in letter 268. 347 William Lionel Wyllie (1851-1931) English artist 348 William Lionel Wyllie349, The funeral of the Late Prince Louis Napoleon, in The Graphic 20 (19 July 1879), p. 49 (cover).
