  • Elizabeth Bowen, Shaking the Cracked Kaleidoscope.Pdf
Research Space Conference paper Elizabeth Bowen: Shaking the cracked kaleidoscope. Futurism and collage in Elizabeth Bowen's To the North Hirst, D. DIANA HIRST SHAKING THE CRACKED KALIEDOSCOPE: FUTURISM AND COLLAGE IN ELIZABETH BOWEN’S TO THE NORTH Paper given at ‘Elizabeth Bowen : A Re-Evaluation’, University of Bedfordshire, 6 May 2017 In a conversation between Elizabeth Bowen and Jocelyn Brooke, recorded for the BBC in1950, Brooke describes reservations he has about her recently published novel The Heat of the Day, and how he feels that it doesn’t really hang together.1 Bowen explains what she had been attempting: I wanted to show people in extremity, working on one another’s characters and fates all the more violently because they worked by chance. I wanted the convulsive shaking of a kaleidoscope, a kaleidoscope also in which the inside reflector was cracked.2 In this paper I will argue that Bowen is attempting something similar nearly twenty years earlier in her fourth novel To the North.3 In their conversation, Brooke and Bowen also discuss how important the quality of light is in both their work, and how Bowen had originally wanted to be a painter. Several critics, as well as Brooke, identify a visual quality in her writing, and Bowen herself affirms this several occasions. Thus I will also argue that it is possible to identify some techniques of the visual artist in her work in this 1932 novel. Building up to the Second World War, the thirties was a decade of unease, and unease pervades the novel. Perhaps unsurprisingly therefore, the visual art genres or movements that are most relevant to To the North are those that are fragmented: Cubism, particularly Futurism, and their opposite: making something from fragments (collage, a jigsaw puzzle or a mosaic).

  • To Anthon Van Rappard. the Hague, on Or About Sunday, 22 October 1882
To Anthon van Rappard. The Hague, on or about Sunday, 22 October 1882. on or about Sunday, 22 October 1882 Metadata Source status: Original manuscript Location: Amsterdam, Van Gogh Museum, inv. no. b8349 V/2006 Date: In De brieven 1990 this letter is dated on or about 29 October 1882, which results in a very high density of letters to Van Rappard in the last days of October. Moreover, it leads to the strange situation that, at a time when Van Gogh and Van Rappard are corresponding with great frequency about illustrations, for four weeks (roughly from the end of September to the end of October) no letters pass between them. This is why we have placed the letter a little earlier in October. Van Gogh wrote on or about 23 September that within 14 days (perhaps even sooner) he expected to have a collection of prints in his possession (letter 268, ll. 49-50). The postscript in letter 274 of 22 October shows that by then he had received the new woodcuts, whereas in letter 272 of 15 October he doesnt yet mention them, so we assume that the acquisition came into his hands in the intervening week. The obvious conclusion is that the list of monograms in the present letter was drawn up wholly or partly because of this acquisition. Whether this was done after Sunday, 22 October (and thus before or after letter 274) is impossible to determine, but it must have been around then, so we date the letter to on or about Sunday, 22 October.

  • Making Amusement the Vehicle of Instruction’: Key Developments in the Nursery Reading Market 1783-1900
1 ‘Making amusement the vehicle of instruction’: Key Developments in the Nursery Reading Market 1783-1900 PhD Thesis submitted by Lesley Jane Delaney UCL Department of English Literature and Language 2012 SIGNED DECLARATION 2 I, Lesley Jane Delaney confirm that the work presented in this thesis is my own. Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– ABSTRACT 3 ABSTRACT During the course of the nineteenth century children’s early reading experience was radically transformed; late eighteenth-century children were expected to cut their teeth on morally improving texts, while Victorian children learned to read more playfully through colourful picturebooks. This thesis explores the reasons for this paradigm change through a study of the key developments in children’s publishing from 1783 to 1900. Successively examining an amateur author, a commercial publisher, an innovative editor, and a brilliant illustrator with a strong interest in progressive theories of education, the thesis is alive to the multiplicity of influences on children’s reading over the century. Chapter One outlines the scope of the study. Chapter Two focuses on Ellenor Fenn’s graded dialogues, Cobwebs to catch flies (1783), initially marketed as part of a reading scheme, which remained in print for more than 120 years. Fenn’s highly original method of teaching reading through real stories, with its emphasis on simple words, large type, and high-quality pictures, laid the foundations for modern nursery books. Chapter Three examines John Harris, who issued a ground- breaking series of colour-illustrated rhyming stories and educational books in the 1810s, marketed as ‘Harris’s Cabinet of Amusement and Instruction’.
