In this short editorial coda, I cannot do justice to all of the responses, even though each is valuable and instructive. I should like, first of all, brieflyto review each contribution. In the remainder of what I have to say, I shall then respond in more general terms about the nature of the overall project of reading his- torical women philosophers as part of the republican tradition, with the aim of tackling what I consider to be some misconceptions. In so doing, I will address myself mostly to Karen Green’s[2021] article which is the most sceptical about the endeavour, although I shall also engage with Lena Halldenius [2021]. -

Bestiaries St John’s holds two of the ca. 90 surviving manuscript bestiaries in Latin. Both are displayed here. These volumes were often, although not always, highly illustrated listings of beasts, birds, and sometimes rocks, combining folklore, classical learning and Christian allegory. The text was extracted from any one of several compendia of animal lore cited by classical authors, the oldest being the anonymous Physiologus of the 2nd century AD, but both examples from St John’s belong to a group which draw on the book 12 of a major early medieval encyclopaedic work, Isidore of Seville’s Etymologiae, dating to the 630s. The production of bestiaries didn’t really get under way until the 10th century, but continued throughout the high Middle Ages. Although the lore bestiaries drew on was often popular, and sometimes widely believed, these were not primarily zoological statements, rather works of Christian spiritual allegory, in which narrative and symbolism played a major part. Thus the pelican is shown tearing at its breast in order to feed its young, in a parallel with the suffering and redemptive nature of Christ. The high status of the manuscripts, demonstrated by their lavish illuminations, also militates against the notion that lay people had easy access to them, and hence that they were manuals of scientific or practical knowledge. Instead they tended to be owned by religious houses, as both the manuscripts displayed here were, and furnished material and inspiration for sermons and religious life. The Lion 13th c. Condition: some foxing, the spine a little chipped and evidence that a lower label has been removed at some point, but generally a very attractive copy indeed. Very rare Dutch edition: no copy in Australia or NZ First Dutch edition of Shillibeer’s swashbuckling tale of sailing in the Pacific, including his widely-read account of meeting the last of the Bounty survivors on Pitcairn Island. Even apart from it’s Bligh interest, Shillibeer’s book is an important account from an intriguing era in Pacific exploration. Shillibeer’s book was originally published in Taunton (Somerset) in 1817 and again in London later the same year. This Dutch edition is very scarce indeed, and I can find records relating to only two confirmed sales: the first a rather worn copy at Sotheby’s in 1964, at the sale of the library of Senor Alberto Dodero of Buenos Aires (US$22.40); and a second copy, noted as in fair condition, at the small Dutch auction house Bubb-Kupyer in 2004 (EUR 420). $1250 References: Borba de Moraes, p. 797; Ferguson, 767; Sabin, 80845. About Us Masthead This book could have begun with a variant of my favorite opening line--from Steven Shapin's The Scientific Revolution (1996): "There was no such thing as [Romanticism], and this is a book about it." As Gay's prologue notes, "if there were Feedback German romantics and French romantics, they did not start from the same initial impulse, did not develop the same cultural expressions in their literature and their art" (xii-xiii). Proposing, then, to talk of romanticisms--the plural is used throughout the book, as in most discussions of romanticism(s) these days--he treats the movement as a "large . far-flung family" (19) rather than as homogeneous. Gay nonetheless finds certain shared preoccupations, primarily in French and German literature, visual art, and music between the late eighteenth century and the mid-twentieth century. Peter Gay died at 91 in 2015, the year this book was published. Not surprisingly, since his thirty-some previous books have covered Weimar, Freud, the Enlightenment, and Modernism, a good deal of this new book highlights modernity and modernism with some glances back at the eighteenth century. Thus he tacitly argues that the romanticisms he explores not only emerged from the Enlightenment but also persisted well into the twentieth century. As Gay concludes in a brief epilogue, twentieth-century novelists, poets, composers, painters, dramatists, and architects "lived off the [romantic] past" (116), suggesting that modernity is a cluster of romanticisms under a different name. -

Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106-1346 ABSTRACT In the historiography of pharmacology and therapeutics, the 18th century is regarded as a period of transition from traditional, Galenistic materia medica to the beginnings of modern, experimental drug research. Ackerknecht (1973) characterized the pharmacotherapy of this period as a "chaotic mixture of chemiatric and Galenistic practices", yet acknowledged an "increasing tendency toward empiricism, partly even true experimentalism". This thesis explores this transitional phase for the first time in depth, examining the relations between pharmacological experimentation, theory-building, and therapeutic practice. Furthermore, ethical aspects are highlighted. The general introduction discusses the secondary literature and presents the results of a systematic study of pharmacological articles in relevant 18th-century periodicals. The identified main areas of contemporary interest, the spectrum of methods applied, and the composition of the authorship are described and interpreted. -
