Rearranged to match the Ambleside Online reading order, this collection features Margaret Gatty's classic parables that use nature to teach us about God and faith. This edition includes the original chapter heading and ending illustrations. About the AuthorMargaret (Mrs. Alfred) Gatty (1809ndash;4 October 1873) at Burnham on Crouch, Essex, was an English writer of children's literature. She was the daughter of the Rev. Alexander John Scott, D.D., a Royal Navy chaplain, who served under, and was the trusted friend of, Lord Nelson onboard the HMS Victory before and during the Battle of Trafalgar. She married the Rev. Alfred Gatty, D.D., Ecclesfield, Yorkshire in 1839 and moved into the vicarage of Church of St. Mary shortly after. She became a highly useful and popular writer of tales for young people. Among her books may be mentioned Parables from Nature, Worlds not Realised, Proverbs Illustrated, and Aunt Judy's Tales. She also conducted Aunt Judy's Magazine, a family publication written by various members of Margaret's large family. She became fascinated with marine biology, possibly on the advice of William Henry Harvey, who she had met in Hastings in 1848. Following this, she wrote a book on British seaweeds which dejargonised much of which had been written previously on the subject. She corresponded with many of the greatest marine biologists of her day including George Busk and Robert Brown. Margaret Gatty amassed a large collection of marine material, much of which gathered by her correspondents in far flung corners of the British Empire. This was donated to Weston Park Museum by her daughter, Horatia Katherine Francis Gatty. Gatty suffered from ill health for most of her life and is thought to have suffered from undiagnosed Multiple Sclerosis. Her frequent bouts of illness resulted in a close friendship with Dr. George Johnston, a Doctor noted for advocating pain relieving medication. He advised her on the use of Chloroform during child birth and Gatty became the first woman in Sheffield to use the drug during labour. Gatty was the mother of Juliana Horatia Ewing, also a writer of children's books, and Alfred Scott-Gatty, who served as Garter Principal King of Arms. Ackerman, Ann Trugman. Victorian Ideology and British Children's Literature. Doctor of Philosophy (History). December, 1984. 369 pp., 11 illustrations, bibliography, 386 titles. This dissertation shows the ideas of Victorian England, 1850-1914, as reflected in Victorian children's literature. To establish the validity of studying children's literature as a guide to the Victorian age, it was necessary first to show that children's literature in those years reflected and promoted adult ideals. Sources used include not only works by established authors but also children's periodicals and transient writings like "penny dreadfuls." There are four background chapters: an introduction, a brief social history, a history of publishing for chil- dren, and an examination of Victorian children's authors. Six chapters examine Victorian children's literature in relation to specific historical themes: class structure; the social problems of poverty; temperance; morality, manners, religion, and science; patriotism; and natives, slavery, and missionaries in relation to imperialism. Many findings support accepted historical theories. Attitudes on social class revealed definite class separa- tions, mobility, and obligations. Stories on poverty and 1 child labor show Victorian concern, but suggest few solutions other than charity. Literary items on religion and morality reflect a dominance of evangelical values. There was a morality separate from religion, and it was not threatened by the new developing science; indeed, the materials examined reveal how Victorians tried to reconcile the new science with theology.

    “Leave some for the Naïads and the Dryads”: Environmental Consciousness in Aunt Judy’s Magazine di Laurence Talairach* Abstract: This paper focuses on the role played by key figures of the mid-Victorian children’s periodical Aunt Judy’s Magazine: Margaret Scott Gatty, famous for her Parables from Nature (1855–71) and her British Sea-weeds (1863), and her daughters, Juliana Horatia Ewing and Horatia Katherine Frances Gatty, who edited the magazine after their mother’s death and contributed many pieces between 1866 and 1885. As both naturalists and writers of children’s literature, these Victorian pedagogues not only presented the natural world as an ecosystem in which organisms were interrelated and interdependent but encouraged above all young audiences to take an active part in the protection of the environment, helping thereby shape an environmental consciousness. Through their fictional texts, poetry and answers to correspondents, Margaret Gatty, Juliana Horatia Ewing and Horatia Katherine Frances Gatty revamped the environmental ethics advocated by Georgian children’s writers, inviting juvenile audiences to reflect further, think about future generations and never collect nor “grub” too much so as to leave “some for the Naïads, some for the Dryads, and a bit for the Nixies, and the Pixies” (Juliana Horatia Ewing c.1895: 65). Thus, through their stories, poems and editorship of Aunt Judy’s Magazine, these Victorian children’s writers fostered ecoliteracy and offered potent examples of Victorian ecopedagogy which this paper examines. And after a time a new race came into the Green Valley and filled it; and the stream which never failed turned many wheels, and trades were brisk, and they were what are called black trades.
