    ARCTIC VOL. 40, NO. 1 (MARCH 1987) P. 66-77 My Dear Beaufort: A Personal Letter from John Ross’s Arctic Expedition of 1829-33 CLIVE HOLLAND’ and JAMES M. SAVELLE2 (Received 30 January 1986; accepted in revised form 6 October 1986) ABSTRACT. During his four years’ residence in the Canadian Arctic in search of a Northwest Passage in 1829-33, John Ross wrote a private letter to Francis Beaufort, Hydrographer of the Navy. The letter, reproduced here, provides valuable historical insights into many aspects of Ross’s character and of the expedition generally. His feelings of bitterness toward several of his contemporaries, especially John Barrow and William E. Parry, due to the ridicule suffered as a result of the failure of his first arctic voyage in 1818, are especially revealing, as is his apparently uneasy relationship with his nephew and second-in-command, James Clark Ross. Ross’s increasing despair andpessimism with each succeeding enforced wintering and, eventually, the abandonment of the expedition ship Victory are also clearly evident. Finally,the understandable problems of maintaining crew discipline during the final year of the expedition, though downplayed, begin to emerge.     The Professionalisation of the Royal Navy: 1660-1688 by Samantha Middleton The thesis is submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the award of the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY of the University of Portsmouth September 2020 Abstract This thesis analyses the developments made between 1660 and 1688 that contributed towards the Royal Navy becoming a more professionalised organisation. It outlines the impact of individuals and their methods towards achieving professionalisation. The political and financial problems facing the navy before the restoration of the monarchy are also addressed. Biographical case studies of three influential naval reformers; James Stewart, The Duke of York; William Coventry; and Samuel Pepys are used to demonstrate the significant influence that they had on the process of professionalization. This thesis ascertains that although the terminology had not been invented at this stage, the principles of Management Control were implemented by Pepys, Coventry and the Duke of York as a method of organizational professionalisation, identifying examples of performance measurement, rewards systems and the implantation of standard operating procedures. An in-depth analysis of the Duke of York’s instructions for the duties of the Principal Officers demonstrates that the Duke of York introduced enhanced accounting procedures and additional control mechanisms to reduce abuses and increase administrative efficiency. Additionally, a set of professional responsibilities has been created within this thesis for Coventry, whose role as secretary is absent from the instructions. This shows for the first time, that Coventry identified his professional remit as focusing primarily on retrenchment and the reduction of abuses. This contributed towards wider professionalisation.

Very rare Dutch edition: no copy in Australia or NZ First Dutch edition of Shillibeer’s swashbuckling tale of sailing in the Pacific, including his widely-read account of meeting the last of the Bounty survivors on Pitcairn Island. Even apart from it’s Bligh interest, Shillibeer’s book is an important account from an intriguing era in Pacific exploration. Shillibeer’s book was originally published in Taunton (Somerset) in 1817 and again in London later the same year. This Dutch edition is very scarce indeed, and I can find records relating to only two confirmed sales: the first a rather worn copy at Sotheby’s in 1964, at the sale of the library of Senor Alberto Dodero of Buenos Aires (US$22.40); and a second copy, noted as in fair condition, at the small Dutch auction house Bubb-Kupyer in 2004 (EUR 420). $1250 References: Borba de Moraes, p. 797; Ferguson, 767; Sabin, 80845. Provenance: Colonel Gould Weston, his sale, Christie’s, 15th July 1958, lot 125 as part of an album; Ralph Holland (1917-2012) Thornhill was the most important painter of interiors in the early eighteenth century and was the first British artist to be knighted, on his appointment to sergeant-painter to the King in 1720. His most celebrated works are the interior of the Great Hall at Greenwich and the dome of St. Paul’s, London. He also worked in a number of great English houses, including Blenheim, Hampton Court, Chatsworth, Easton Neston and Wimpole. This drawing may be linked to the work that Thornhill did for Isaac Loader (b.1653) at Deptford. Loader was an anchor maker by profession and was appointed Sheriff of Deptford in 1701. Ralph Thoresby (1658-1725) visited Loader’s house in 1714 and records that `the gardens are surprisingly fine and large: there are Mr Thornhill’s paintings in the Bagnio, and other garden-houses’ (see R.
