DEN HELDER, FORT KIJKDUIN & TEXEL NDS Tour 25 –28 June 2017 Reasons to go! The NDS has organised this tour to complement the Conference: The Dutch Raid on Chatham Dockyard in 1667: its Anglo-Dutch Context and Legacy , and explore the North Holland naval base of Den Helder and Texel Roads. As always, we have unique behind-the-scenes tours and local guides. Amsterdam Scheepvaartmuseum and Den Helder http://www.netherlands-tourism.com/den-helder/ The Conference will be held in the Amsterdam Admiralty Kattenburg, originally a dockyard, now the Marine Etablissement. It is behind ’s Lands Zeemagazijn, the Admiralty arsenal, now Amsterdam Maritime Museum/Scheepvaartmuseum. Amsterdam , a replica East India ship (1749) is moored at Oosterdok wharf. The federal Dutch navy was organised into five Admiralties: Amsterdam, South Holland (Rotterdam), the North Quarter (Hoorn and Enkhuisen), Zeeland (Vlissingen and Middelburg) and Friesland (Dokkum, later Harlingen). Each had its own navy, admirals, seamen and dockyards, financed from taxes and customs collected at the ports to protect Dutch trade, and by federal subsidies for war activities. We shall experience Den Helder’s Navy Day celebrations on Sunday 25 June http://www.saildenhelder.nl/ In the mid-C18 Den Helder was a fishing village on a promontory with a good harbour which became a naval base. It is separated from the island of Texel by the Marsdiep, a deep tide-race which also connects the North Sea and the Waddenzee. In 1799 Den Helder was the site of a Russo-British landing which attempted to overthrow the Batavian Republic. Napoleon Bonaparte, visiting Den Helder in 1811, ordered the construction of a fort (Kijkduin) and naval dockyard (Willemsoord), built 1813–27. A canal linked Den Helder to Amsterdam. The harbour, which benefits from continuous tides so ice-free, is protected by a granite dyke 6 miles (10 km) long. In 1947 Den Helder became the Royal Netherlands Navy’s main base. We shall visit Fort Kijkduin http://www.fortkijkduin.nl/ Marine Museum http://www.marinemuseum.nl/ Willemsoord naval dockyard http://www.willemsoordbv.nl/ The tour will culminate in a ferry trip to Texel, an island of dunes and dykes, where in the C17 over half the adult men earned their living from the sea. Texel Roads/Reede van Texel was the anchorage of the Dutch navy and Dutch East India Company where ships were supplied and awaited favourable winds. We shall see the Reede van Texel model in Kaap Skil, the spectacular museum designed by Mecanoo, which displays artefacts recovered by local fishermen and divers from the many ships wrecked by storms. Kaap Skil, Oudeschild http://www.kaapskil.nl/museumvisit http://www.mecanoo.nl/Projects/project/51/Kaap-Skil-Maritime-and-Beachcombers-Museum/t/0 During the Conference and Tour we shall hear about: • Admiral Maarten Harpertszoon Tromp (1598–1653), commander of the Dutch fleet during the First Anglo-Dutch war (1652–54) who was killed at the Battle of Scheveningen in 1653. • Michiel Adriaenszoon de Ruyter (1607–76), in nominal command of the Dutch fleet in the Second Anglo-Dutch War (1665–67), which carried out the Raid on the Medway in June 1667. The fleet embarked from the Texel. The Dutch captured the English flagship HMS Royal Charles as a trophy. Naval Dockyards Society https://navaldockyards.org/ .
