DEN HELDER, FORT KIJKDUIN & TEXEL NDS Tour 25 –28 June 2017 Reasons to go! The NDS has organised this tour to complement the Conference: The Dutch Raid on Chatham Dockyard in 1667: its Anglo-Dutch Context and Legacy , and explore the North Holland naval base of Den Helder and Texel Roads. As always, we have unique behind-the-scenes tours and local guides. Amsterdam Scheepvaartmuseum and Den Helder http://www.netherlands-tourism.com/den-helder/ The Conference will be held in the Amsterdam Admiralty Kattenburg, originally a dockyard, now the Marine Etablissement. It is behind ’s Lands Zeemagazijn, the Admiralty arsenal, now Amsterdam Maritime Museum/Scheepvaartmuseum. Amsterdam , a replica East India ship (1749) is moored at Oosterdok wharf. The federal Dutch navy was organised into five Admiralties: Amsterdam, South Holland (Rotterdam), the North Quarter (Hoorn and Enkhuisen), Zeeland (Vlissingen and Middelburg) and Friesland (Dokkum, later Harlingen). Each had its own navy, admirals, seamen and dockyards, financed from taxes and customs collected at the ports to protect Dutch trade, and by federal subsidies for war activities. We shall experience Den Helder’s Navy Day celebrations on Sunday 25 June http://www.saildenhelder.nl/ In the mid-C18 Den Helder was a fishing village on a promontory with a good harbour which became a naval base. It is separated from the island of Texel by the Marsdiep, a deep tide-race which also connects the North Sea and the Waddenzee. In 1799 Den Helder was the site of a Russo-British landing which attempted to overthrow the Batavian Republic. Napoleon Bonaparte, visiting Den Helder in 1811, ordered the construction of a fort (Kijkduin) and naval dockyard (Willemsoord), built 1813–27. A canal linked Den Helder to Amsterdam. The harbour, which benefits from continuous tides so ice-free, is protected by a granite dyke 6 miles (10 km) long. In 1947 Den Helder became the Royal Netherlands Navy’s main base. We shall visit Fort Kijkduin http://www.fortkijkduin.nl/ Marine Museum http://www.marinemuseum.nl/ Willemsoord naval dockyard http://www.willemsoordbv.nl/ The tour will culminate in a ferry trip to Texel, an island of dunes and dykes, where in the C17 over half the adult men earned their living from the sea. Texel Roads/Reede van Texel was the anchorage of the Dutch navy and Dutch East India Company where ships were supplied and awaited favourable winds. We shall see the Reede van Texel model in Kaap Skil, the spectacular museum designed by Mecanoo, which displays artefacts recovered by local fishermen and divers from the many ships wrecked by storms. Kaap Skil, Oudeschild http://www.kaapskil.nl/museumvisit http://www.mecanoo.nl/Projects/project/51/Kaap-Skil-Maritime-and-Beachcombers-Museum/t/0 During the Conference and Tour we shall hear about: • Admiral Maarten Harpertszoon Tromp (1598–1653), commander of the Dutch fleet during the First Anglo-Dutch war (1652–54) who was killed at the Battle of Scheveningen in 1653. • Michiel Adriaenszoon de Ruyter (1607–76), in nominal command of the Dutch fleet in the Second Anglo-Dutch War (1665–67), which carried out the Raid on the Medway in June 1667. The fleet embarked from the Texel. The Dutch captured the English flagship HMS Royal Charles as a trophy. Naval Dockyards Society https://navaldockyards.org/ .

  • The Professionalisation of the Royal Navy: 1660-1688
The Professionalisation of the Royal Navy: 1660-1688 by Samantha Middleton The thesis is submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the award of the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY of the University of Portsmouth September 2020 Abstract This thesis analyses the developments made between 1660 and 1688 that contributed towards the Royal Navy becoming a more professionalised organisation. It outlines the impact of individuals and their methods towards achieving professionalisation. The political and financial problems facing the navy before the restoration of the monarchy are also addressed. Biographical case studies of three influential naval reformers; James Stewart, The Duke of York; William Coventry; and Samuel Pepys are used to demonstrate the significant influence that they had on the process of professionalization. This thesis ascertains that although the terminology had not been invented at this stage, the principles of Management Control were implemented by Pepys, Coventry and the Duke of York as a method of organizational professionalisation, identifying examples of performance measurement, rewards systems and the implantation of standard operating procedures. An in-depth analysis of the Duke of York’s instructions for the duties of the Principal Officers demonstrates that the Duke of York introduced enhanced accounting procedures and additional control mechanisms to reduce abuses and increase administrative efficiency. Additionally, a set of professional responsibilities has been created within this thesis for Coventry, whose role as secretary is absent from the instructions. This shows for the first time, that Coventry identified his professional remit as focusing primarily on retrenchment and the reduction of abuses. This contributed towards wider professionalisation.

  • The Invention of the Steam Engine
The Invention of the Steam Engine B. J .G. van der Kooij This case study is part of the research work in preparation for a doctorate-dissertation to be obtained from the University of Technology, Delft, The Netherlands (www.tudelft.nl). It is one of a series of case studies about “Innovation” under the title “The Invention Series.” About the text: This is a scholarly case study describing the historic developments that resulted in the steam engine. It is based on a large number of historic and contemporary sources. As we did not conduct any research into primary sources, we made use of the efforts of numerous others by citing them quite extensively to preserve the original character of their contributions. Where possible we identified the individual authors of the citations. As some are not identifiable, we identified the source of the text. Facts that are considered to be of a general character in the public domain are not cited. About the pictures: Many of the pictures used in this case study were found at websites accessed through the Internet. Where possible they were traced to their origins, which, when found, were indicated as the source. As most are out of copyright, we feel that the fair use we make of the pictures to illustrate the scholarly case is not an infringement of any possible copyright that sometimes (still) is claimed. • Michiel De Ruyter, Held Van Nederland
Michiel de Ruyter, Held van Nederland By Peter Douglas March 24, 2007, is the 400th anniversary of the birth of Michiel Adriaenszoon de Ruyter (1607–1676), perhaps the most renowned admiral in Dutch history. Much of his fame derives from his battles with the English in the Anglo-Dutch Wars, where he scored several major victories. He has been described as not only a military genius but also as a charismatic leader, and an honest, modest, and devout man. He is certainly the man upon Michiel de Ruyter whom the fledgling Republic of the United Provinces relied at a crucial time in its history, defending its newly gained independence and assuring its future. A master tactician, De Ruyter has been described as the man who built the Dutch Navy and made it into a powerful national fighting force. Much of his success comes from improvements in the conditions aboard his ships, an attitude that earned him the loyalty and respect of his fleet. While he insisted on strict obedience, he also encouraged his captains to express their opinions in a council of war before each engagement. He trained his men to outperform other contemporary navies, and raised the status of the Dutch seaman from a loose rabble of mercenaries and pressed semi-criminals to a respected body of men who well deserved the gratitude of their countrymen. In Ferdinand Bol’s 1667 three-quarter portrait below we see De Ruyter in a black coat with gold buttons worn over a long-sleeved brocaded waistcoat. His expression is Michiel de Ruyter, Held van Nederland pensive and serious, but his moustache is jaunty.
