Index . 277 Publisher's Note: This book recounts the lives of some of the Ulama of Iran com­ mitted to the inspired and noble cause of Islam. It is first and foremost dedicated to their memory and to the spirit in which they lived and worked to finally attain the supreme status of martyrdom. The biogra­ phies contained herein give an account of the political and social struggles of the Ulama in the cause of Islam and should be a source of inspiration to all Muslim nations and oppressed masses of the world. It is an account of their undaunting and continued struggle, devotion and self-sacrifice to save their nations from the shackles of oppression and the moral quagmire into which they have fallen for too long now. A number of books have been written on Islam and the savants of Islam by scholars for several years now and Western orientalists in particular have done a good deal of research and study pertaining to this subject. Their valuable efforts have unfortunately failed to generate the inspiration required for a viral regeneration of Islam and there are many reasons for this of which two srand out in particular. First, their knowledge, information and understanding of the culture and theology of Islam have been bounded by their own points of view, a point that applies in particular to orientalists whose very consciousness has been formed through their grounding in a Western theological mould.

APRIL 2018 SCHEHEREZADE FARAMARZI ome fifteen million of Iran’s eighty million people are Sunni Muslims, the country’s largest religious minority. Politically and economically disadvantaged, these Sunnis receive relatively lit- tle attention compared with other minorities and are concen- Strated in border areas from Baluchistan in the southeast, to Kurdistan in the northwest, to the Persian Gulf in the south. The flare up of tensions between regional rivals Saudi Arabia and Iran over Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, and Yemen would seem to encourage interest in the state of Iranian Sunnis, if only because the Saudis present them- selves as defenders of the world’s Sunnis, and Iran the self-appointed champion of the Shia cause. So how do Iran’s Sunnis fare in a state where Shia theology governs al- most every aspect of life? How have they been affected by this regional rivalry? Are they stuck between jihadist and other extreme regional Sunni movements on the one hand, and the Shia regime’s aggres- sive policies on the other? Is there a danger that these policies could push some disgruntled Iranian Sunnis toward militancy and terrorism? A tour of Turkmen Sahra in the northeast of Iran near the Caspian Sea, and in Hormozgan on the Persian Gulf in 2015 and 2016 revealed some of the answers.     “The West” in the Eyes of the Iranian Intellectuals of the Interwar Years (1919–1939) Mehrzad Boroujerdi n 1929, after a lecture by Arnold Toynbee (from the notes of Denison Ross, the fi rst director of the School of Oriental and African Studies) on the subject of the modern- ization of the Middle East, a commentator said, Persia has not been modernized and has not in reality been Westernized. Look at the map: there is Persia right up against Russia. For the past hundred years, living cheek by jowl with Russia, Persia has maintained her complete independence of Russian thought. Although sixty to seventy percent of her trade for the past hundred years has been with Russia, Persia remains aloof in spirit and in practice. For the past ten years, Persia has been living alongside the Union of Socialist Soviet Republics, and has remained free from any impregnation by their basic ideas. Her freedom is due to her cultural independence. For the safety of Persia it is essential, if she is to continue to develop on her own lines, that she should not attempt modernization, and I do not think that the attempt is being made. It is true that the Persians have adopted motor-cars and in small way railways. But let us remember that the Persians have always been in the forefront in anything of that sort. The fi rst Eastern nation to enter the Postal Union and to adopt a system of telegraphs was Persia, which country was also among the fi rst of the Eastern nations to join the League of Nations and to become an active member.

This kind of structures can link the past and the future like the rings of a chain. In addition they have the potential to create and support the identity of a nation. The glory, dignity, culture, tradition and thoroughly the history of a nation can represent through the monumental structures. These structures can have variety of types including historical buildings or complexes, modern structures with advanced technology, landmarks, etc. Since during the last decades, identity crisis has been a major problem for contemporary architecture, the aim of this study is to survey the relation between national identity and monumental buildings and to recognize how monumental buildings contribute to create national identity.

Abstract The 1979 Islamic Revolution of Iran was based and formed upon the concept of Khomeinism, the religious, political, and social ideas of Ayatullah Ruhollah Khomeini. While the Iranian revolution was carried out with the slogans of independence, freedom, and Islamic Republic, Khomeini's framework gave it a specific impetus for the unity of people, religious culture, and leadership. Khomeinism was not just an effort, on a religious basis, to alter a national system. It included and was dependent upon the projection of a clash beyond a “national” struggle, including was a clash of ideology with that associated with the United States. Analysing the Iran-US relationship over the past century and Khomeini’s interpretation of it, this thesis attempts to show how the Ayatullah projected "America" versus Iranian national freedom and religious pride.

    Ulema buried in the Holy City of Qom 2 (In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful) Foreword The Holy Prophet − said: "There are two groups of my Ummah that when they are pious, my Ummah will be upright, and when they are immoral, my Ummah will be corrupt." The Messenger of Allah − was asked who they were, and he answered: "The religious scholars and rulers."1 It is one of Allah’s countless bounties that there has never been a time that mankind has been without guidance. This guidance has appeared in many forms, including Prophets, Imams, and in their absence, the Ulemas and Marajas. ‘Ulema’ are defined as being Muslim scholars trained in Islam and Islamic law; in this day and age of the Ghayba (occultation) of the 12th Imam, Imam Mahdi Β, they are the main source of external guidance that people turn to for answers to questions, doubts, and simply as overall role- models. The Holy City of Qom, Iran, has been the epicentre of Islamic knowledge due to the presence and blessings of Bibi Ma’sooma ϑ, the sister of the 8th Imam, Imam Radha Β) Ulema of all backgrounds and all levels have been drawn to Bibi and this city, both benefiting from and contributing to the fountain of Islamic knowledge that flows here in the Hawzas (Islamic Seminaries) of Qom.
