STOCKS TO WATCH by Erik Ipsen After huge run-up, even MasterCard shares begin to feel the sting of cooling economy MASTERCARD is in a great business. It merely processes transactions and isn’t on the hook if cardholders can’t actually pay for the stuff they buy. But signs are mounting that the slowdown is spreading to Europe, where the plastic kingpin has been growing the most. Sure, MasterCard is expected to post a 41% surge in earnings this week, but profit growth is slowing— dangerous for a company whose shares have soared 64% in the past year. Next week Maidenform is expected to post a 27% falloff in second-quarter profits, nearly triple the drop of the first quarter. Yet the stock is up 17% this year. Launches of the Ultimate Gel Pushup and the Every Bit Invisible bras could lift Maidenform’s results, as could adding DKNY’s intimates to the lineup, but that remains to be seen. On the other hand, the shares trade at 12 times earnings, which means they’re a relatively cheap bet that sex sells. Lazard is on a surprising roll. Its shares are up 10% in the past month. Mergers and acquisitions, where Lazard makes most of its dough, is off 50%, but the firm managed to land a spot helping InBev with its $50 billion purchase of Budweiser. Then there’s advisory work, such as helping UBS decide whether to dump PaineWebber, the brokerage that Lazard helped it buy in 2000 for $10 billion. charts: lindström bekka

Sales of the luxury suites at the Mets’ new stadium, Citi Field, are also sizzling. Forty- eight of 49 are sold, and a list of 12 hopefuls are vying for the last one. The suites go for $250,000 to $500,000 a year, with leases running from three to 10 years. Citi Field opens next season. “We’ve done very well, which might suggest we priced the suites low,” says Dave Howard, executive vice president of the Mets.“They are tremendous

All the new suites will be within the infield—including the few “Sterling” ones, which are just two rows from the field. The high demand might spur the team to convert five single-game party suites into full-season rentals, Mr. Howard says.

GHI and HIP are launching a health plan that isn’t science fiction.

Health care isn’t rocket science. It’s pretty simple. People want great doctors, great coverage, and a premium they can aord. And that’s what EmblemHealth will deliver from day one. As the largest health plan based in New York State, we have the doctors, the plans, and the pricing structure to really give people what they want. But we won’t stop there. Because GHI and HIP are now working as one to make things even better. And that’s a fact, not fiction.

The plan that works.

JOE TORRE ON THE ART OF MANAGING “In baseball or in business, it takes desire as well as talent.”

“You’ve seen it and I’ve lived it. In any competition, knowledge of the game doesn’t always win the day. More often than not, particularly in a personal services business, the team with the most desire does.”Now in its 90th year, J.H. Cohn continues to dedicate itself to solving client problems. Not just with technical expertise, but with men and women who give their best. For each other. For each client. Desire. It has helped make J.H. Cohn the largest regional accounting and consulting firm headquartered in the Northeast.
