From cars and computer chips to brand clothing, material objects manufactured across Asia have become indispensable to people’s lives in most cultural contexts. This mega production generates huge amounts of waste and pollution that threaten the health and lifestyle of many Asians. Yet, Asia is not only a site of production, but also one of the most rapidly growing consumer markets. This series focuses on consumption – the engine propelling Asia onto the world economic stage – and its implications, from practices and ideologies to environmental sustainability, both globally and on the region itself. The series explores the interplay between the state, market economy, technologies, and everyday life, all of which have become defining facets of contemporary Asian culture. Shifts in consumption that have taken place across Asia since the 1950s onward have had a deep impact on new and emerging informal economies of material care, revealing previously invisible sites of innovation, resistance and co-option. The series will bring together studies by historians, anthropologists, geographers, and political scientists that systematically document and conceptualize Asia’s engagement with consumption and sustainability in the global environment. So common that it has almost become cliché. Except that for many people all over the world its true, or at least it feels true. This project didn’t save my life, but it feels like it. Skateboarding has been there for me again and again since I was eight years old. For the last four years it has come into my professional life, getting me through disenchantment with my craft, many of the people doing it, and with the state of things in the world after 2016. So, thank you skateboarding. Thank you Anthony Claravall. Your pioneering videos and photos brought Asia to skateboarders and skateboarders to Asia. You are always somewhere in the region shooting footage, mentoring other filmers and photographers, and pushing skateboarding forward from Manila to Mumbai. Despite this you have given me so much of your time, knowledge and patience. Humility and generosity are rare qualities and you have both in abundance. And with a sense of humour too. Abstract Skateboarding is widely regarded as a subculture that is highly resistant to any type of integration or co-option from large, mainstream companies. In 2002 Nike entered the skateboarding market with its Nike SB line of shoes, and since 2004 has experienced tremendous success within the skateboarding culture. During its early years Nike experienced a great deal of backlash from the skateboarding community, but has recently gained wider acceptance as a legitimate company within this culture. The purpose of this study is to examine the specific aspects of authenticity Nike was able achieve in order to successfully integrate into skateboarding. In order to investigate the case of Nike SB specifically, the concept of company authenticity within skateboarding must first be clarified as well. Opening the series on Friday, September 6 is George Gage’s Skateboard (1978), following a lumpish loser who comes up with an ill-advised scheme to manage an all-teen skateboarding team in order to settle his debts with his bookie. An awesomely retro ride through 70s skateboarding culture, Skateboard was written and produced by Miami Vice producer Dick Wolf and stars teen idol Leif Garrett (Alfred Hitchcock’s daughter plays his mom!) and Z-Boys great Tony Alva. Gage will appear in person for a Q&A following the screening. Two of the earliest films in the series showcase the upright technique that dominated in the 60s. Skaterdater (1965—Sep 23), Noel Black’s freewheelingly shot, dialogue-free puppy-love story (made with pre-adolescent members of Torrance, California’s Imperial Skateboard Club) is widely considered to be the first skateboard movie. Claude Jutra’s cinéma vérité lark The Devil’s Toy (1966—Sep 23), is narrated in faux-alarmist fashion, with kids whipping down the hills of Montreal, only to have their decks confiscated by the cops.

Williams 2020 Abstract This thesis examines the informal sporting culture of skateboarding as a contested site of racial politics in the United States of America (US). Action sports scholars have long identified the ‘whiteness’ of this sport but rarely created space for the voices of people of colour (POC) within skateboarding. Underpinned by Critical Race Theory (CRT), this project centralizes the previously unheard voices of POC and reveals the unique challenges, strategies, and successes of POC within the elite skateboarding culture across particular historical contexts of skateboarding and within US society. With the aim of understanding the complex and nuanced experiences of race within the skateboarding culture, sport, and industry, I conducted semi-structured interviews with forty male and seven female skateboarders of colour who have played critical roles in the culture as athletes, company owners, managers and media producers.

ISSN 2398-9467 INTRODUCTION : This publication is the product of the conference, Moving Images – Static Spaces: Architectures, Art, Media, Film, Digital Art and Design held in Istanbul in April 2018. Organised by Altinbaş University, the international research group AMPS, the scholarly journal Architecture_MPS and PARADE (Publication and research in Art, Architecture, Design and Environments, it offered a platform for multiple and diverse examinations of the city based on the following proposition: The relationship between architecture, urban environments and the moving image is deep rooted. It is also mutating. Born in the City Symphony films of the early 20th it was premised on the dynamic and mobile representation of buildings, streets and cities. Caught on celluloid, these architectures were the setting of news reels and documentaries. They were also settings projected on screen and presented like never before. This complex relationship continues today with interiors, architecture and cities still forming backdrops to action and being the subject of feature films, documentaries, news broadcasts and TV. Today, however, moving imagery and architecture coexist in multiple other worlds too: iphone screens and locative media; YouTube ‘news’ streaming of war torn cites; virtual reality spaces explored through headsets and haptic sensors; the animated environments of Second Life; the fantastical settings of the gaming industry; fly-through representations of architectural projects; and the real-time algorithmic formation of parametric architecture on a computer screen.

Steve Berra and Eric Koston founded The Berrics in 2007 and launched Battle At The Berrics a year later, creating a platform for skate enthusiasts to gather and celebrate the vibrant culture. The Berrics officially partnered with HYPEBEAST in 2018 and commemorated its 10th anniversary. This year, the skate community welcomes another breakthrough with Women's Battle At The Berrics (WBATB). BATB is one of the most esteemed tests of skill in the world of action sports, producing men’s champs including Paul Rodriguez, Chris Joslin, and PJ Ladd. The contestants face off in a bracket-style, single elimination, winner-takes-all tournament. In each round, two skilled riders go trick for trick in a H.O.R.S.E.-style game of flat ground skating until one can’t hang. The winner moves to the next round to face another challenger, the loser skates off to compete another day. Detailed rules are attached below. Skateboard champion hopefuls posted their best flatground maneuvers on Instagram with the hashtag #WhoIsInWBATB, and The Berrics team chose the most promising skateboarders amongst the crowd, announcing the list of final contestants online yesterday.
