Steve Berra and Eric Koston founded The Berrics in 2007 and launched Battle At The Berrics a year later, creating a platform for skate enthusiasts to gather and celebrate the vibrant culture. The Berrics officially partnered with HYPEBEAST in 2018 and commemorated its 10th anniversary. This year, the skate community welcomes another breakthrough with Women's Battle At The Berrics (WBATB). BATB is one of the most esteemed tests of skill in the world of action sports, producing men’s champs including Paul Rodriguez, Chris Joslin, and PJ Ladd. The contestants face off in a bracket-style, single elimination, winner-takes-all tournament. In each round, two skilled riders go trick for trick in a H.O.R.S.E.-style game of flat ground skating until one can’t hang. The winner moves to the next round to face another challenger, the loser skates off to compete another day. Detailed rules are attached below. Skateboard champion hopefuls posted their best flatground maneuvers on Instagram with the hashtag #WhoIsInWBATB, and The Berrics team chose the most promising skateboarders amongst the crowd, announcing the list of final contestants online yesterday. See the official announcement video HERE, head over to Theberrics.com for more info. About The Berrics The Berrics was formed in 2007 by professional skateboarders Steve Berra and Eric Koston— close friends who have been involved in the industry for decades—when they decided that they needed a private training facility where they can skateboard with their friends. Then, noting a gap in how skateboard media was being presented to the world, the launch of www.TheBerrics.com was a perfect example of supply and demand intersecting with burgeoning technological advancements. There was nothing else like The Berrics at the time; online skateboard media was essentially a blank slate ripe for experimentation. Today, The Berrics is established as the leading media manufacturer for skateboarding and its associated youth culture, attracting millions of viewers worldwide and integrating a far-reaching network of channels across multiple platforms. Concept for: Australian Skateboarding Book David Pang 11Aug2005 Proposal: To create the definitive coffee table book on skateboarding in Australia, with a key principle to be unbiased toward any sector of skateboarding and coverage (individual, company, location, photographer, writer etc). Abstract Skateboarding is widely regarded as a subculture that is highly resistant to any type of integration or co-option from large, mainstream companies. In 2002 Nike entered the skateboarding market with its Nike SB line of shoes, and since 2004 has experienced tremendous success within the skateboarding culture. During its early years Nike experienced a great deal of backlash from the skateboarding community, but has recently gained wider acceptance as a legitimate company within this culture. The purpose of this study is to examine the specific aspects of authenticity Nike was able achieve in order to successfully integrate into skateboarding. In order to investigate the case of Nike SB specifically, the concept of company authenticity within skateboarding must first be clarified as well. This study involved an electronic survey of skateboarders.

Colour in the Lines: The Racial Politics and Possibilities of US Skateboarding Culture A thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Waikato by Neftalie S. Williams 2020 Abstract This thesis examines the informal sporting culture of skateboarding as a contested site of racial politics in the United States of America (US). Action sports scholars have long identified the ‘whiteness’ of this sport but rarely created space for the voices of people of colour (POC) within skateboarding. Underpinned by Critical Race Theory (CRT), this project centralizes the previously unheard voices of POC and reveals the unique challenges, strategies, and successes of POC within the elite skateboarding culture across particular historical contexts of skateboarding and within US society. With the aim of understanding the complex and nuanced experiences of race within the skateboarding culture, sport, and industry, I conducted semi-structured interviews with forty male and seven female skateboarders of colour who have played critical roles in the culture as athletes, company owners, managers and media producers.

This article, through an exploration of the politics and discourses of urban skateboarding, suggests that this clear distinction, between entrepreneurialism and community–based place making, may fail to explain transformative changes occurring in public space today. Comparing two grassroots activist campaigns at the Brooklyn Banks in New York City (NYC) and West LA Courthouse in the city of Los Angeles (LA), this article explains the ways in which skateboarders leverage specific neoliberal ideologies to claim their right to these two settings. In both cases, skateboarders save spaces through entrepreneurial urban means that bolster neoliberal values while retaining the tactical nature of their activities. Although both activist movements pursue the common values of authenticity, entrepreneurship, and private funding, they employ different discourses to reclaim public space. The NYC skaters frame a security discourse, which ultimately 1Department of Real Estate and Built Environment, National Taipei University, Taiwan 2Columbia University, New York, NY, USA Corresponding author(s): Chihsin Chiu, Department of Real Estate and Built Environment, College of Public Affairs, National Taipei University, 151 University Rd., San Shia Dist., New Taipei City 23741, Taiwan.

CONTESTING PUBLIC SPACE SKATEBOARDING, URBAN DEVELOPMENT, AND THE POLITICS OF PLAY BY FRANCISCO SALIM VIVONI GALLART DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Sociology in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2010 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Professor Jan Nederveen Pieterse, Chair Professor Norman K. Denzin Professor David Wilson Assistant Professor Brian Dill ABSTRACT Recent urban development schemes seek to produce new public spaces for the pursuit of leisure. Tourism, entertainment, and consumption figure among the intended uses of these increasingly policed and regulated spaces. The making of leisure cities takes place through dynamics of controlled inclusion and the masking of social disparities. However, challenges to the production of leisure spaces abound as everyday practices and aesthetic interventions also shape the urban landscape. Contestation unfolds at ground level through the embrace of public space as a site of spontaneous acts of creativity and grassroots projects invested in the widening of public participation. This study focuses on skateboarders’ claims to the city through a survey of the multiple forces engaged in the production and regulation of skateboarding spaces in Chicago. Through participatory research, it chronicles social dynamics of contestation and accommodation grounded in the production of planned and found spaces. The study discusses skateboarding as an expression of creative play and critical

E-mail address: [email protected] Website: http://www.transformativestudies.org ©2019 by The Transformative Studies Institute. All rights reserved.] I initially heard that Gregory Snyder was studying skateboarders while in the field gathering data for my dissertation, which examined the careers of local, amateur, and professional skaters. While enjoying dinner in between skate sessions in 2013, one of my respondent’s friends mentioned that Snyder had interviewed him about skateboarding. However, before I had a chance to learn more about the project, we were packing up our stuff and heading off to the next spot. Years later, when I saw Snyder had published his book, Skateboarding LA: Inside Professional Street Skateboarding, I thought back to that night and I was excited to read his manuscript. Snyder sections his book into four parts: a broad examination of skate culture; the careers of those within the subculture of skateboarding; skateboarding spots; and the politics of skateboarding via an investigation of the city’s decision to endorse the West Los Angeles Civic Center (known as the Courthouse) as a legitimate skate spot. The strongest of these sections is Snyder’s discussion of skateboard spots and his account of the campaign to turn the Courthouse into a legal skate spot.

CONSUMPTION AND SUSTAINABILITY IN ASIA McDuie-Ra Duncan McDuie-Ra Skateboarding and Urban Landscapes Skateboarding and Urban Landscapes in Asia in Asia Endless Spots Skateboarding and Urban Landscapes in Asia Consumption and Sustainability in Asia Asia is the primary site of production of a myriad of commodities that circulate the globe. From cars and computer chips to brand clothing, material objects manufactured across Asia have become indispensable to people’s lives in most cultural contexts. This mega production generates huge amounts of waste and pollution that threaten the health and lifestyle of many Asians. Yet, Asia is not only a site of production, but also one of the most rapidly growing consumer markets. This series focuses on consumption – the engine propelling Asia onto the world economic stage – and its implications, from practices and ideologies to environmental sustainability, both globally and on the region itself. The series explores the interplay between the state, market economy, technologies, and everyday life, all of which have become defining facets of contemporary Asian culture. Shifts in consumption that have taken place across Asia since the 1950s onward have had a deep impact on new and emerging informal economies of material care, revealing previously invisible sites of innovation, resistance and co-option. The series will bring together studies by historians, anthropologists, geographers, and political scientists that systematically document and conceptualize Asia’s engagement with consumption and sustainability
