2016 Gala Program Book 125 YEARS OF ENRICHING COMMUNITIES. Northern Trust is proud to support Pritzker Military Museum & Library’s 2016 Liberty Gala. For more than 125 years, we’ve been meeting our clients’ financial needs while nurturing a culture of caring and a commitment to invest in the communities we serve. It’s all part of being a good neighbor. TO LEARN MORE VISIT northerntrust.com WEALTH PLANNING \ BANKING \ TRUST & ESTATE SERVICES \ INVESTING \ FAMILY OFFICE GREETINGS FROM & Chair Found COLONEL PRITZKER WELCOME TO THE PRITZKER MILITARY MUSEUM & LIBRARY’S 2016 LIBERTY GALA! Thank you for joining us this evening to celebrate the work of the Museum & Library. It is amazing what this institution accomplishes every year as a place that expands the idea of what a memorial to service members and their families should be. None of these achievements could happen without your generosity. The design for this year’s Gala was inspired by the work of Pulitzer Prize-winning editorial cartoonist Bill Mauldin. Recently, the Museum & Library was selected by Mauldin’s family to be the repository for his original comics from over three decades of work, including his time at the Chicago Sun-Times as well as his 1947 book Back Home. Still poignant today, Mauldin’s unique blend of wit, humor and an acute eye for truth and accuracy serve as a window into the experiences of people who serve in the military. As a result of your support, the Museum & Library off ers an extensive and ever-growing collection of more than 90,000 items—books, periodicals, letters, journals, rosters, unit histories and more—to the public. With the use of technology, we can share this information far beyond the doors of our Michigan Avenue location. Our books, museum exhibits, podcasts, television programming, oral histories and Veterans Information Center reach nearly a million people around the world each and every year. This evening we honor the work of Hew Strachan, the 2016 recipient of the Pritzker Military Museum & Library Literature Award for Lifetime Achievement in Military Writing. Hew’s body of scholarship and his role in advising modern leaders on the historical trajectories of current events is emblematic of our mission to ensure that the lessons of the past are remembered and studied. As a scholar of the highest order, he is very deserving of this award and recognition. It is my distinct honor to welcome Senator Elizabeth Dole as the Host Committee Chair for this year’s Gala. She and her husband have dedicated their lives to helping veterans and their families, and her exemplary leadership, along with that of the rest of the Host Committee, was instrumental in the success of this event. For this and for the great work that Senator Dole does with the Elizabeth Dole Foundation’s Hidden Heroes Campaign, she has my sincerest thanks and admiration. I want to also thank all of our veteran and active duty military guests as well as their families for their service, and welcome them to this gathering of citizens and soldiers. Thanks are also in order to the Museum & Library’s Board of Directors, and to Kenneth Clarke and his entire staff , for all of their eff orts in making this evening and the work of the Museum & Library possible. Finally, I want to wish all of our guests a wonderful and, hopefully, enlightening evening. 13TH ANNUAL LIBERTY GALA SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 5, 2016 • HILTON CHICAGO COCKTAIL RECEPTION | NORMANDIE LOUNGE DINNER AND PROGRAM | GRAND BALLROOM Presentation of Colors Call for Colors Called by Senator Elizabeth Dole, Color Guard from Loyola University Chicago National Anthem Petty Offi cer Third Class Danlie Cuenca, USN Recognition of Military Guests Senator Elizabeth Dole Welcome, Recognition of Evening’s Special Guests, Introduction of Year-in-Review Video Stacey Baca, Host, ABC 7 The Museum & Library Kenneth Clarke, President & CEO, Pritzker Military Museum & Library Introduction of JROTC Student Pritzker Military Museum & Library Distinguished Service Medal Presentation to Cadet Adrian Guachichullca, Lincoln Park High School Founder’s Literature Award Presentation Colonel (IL) Jennifer N. Annual Review 2016/17 Pushing at the frontiers of Knowledge Portrait of Dr Henry Odili Nwume (Brasenose) by Sarah Jane Moon – see The Full Picture, page 17. FOREWORD 2016/17 has been a memorable year for the country and for our University. In the ever-changing and deeply uncertain world around us, the University of Oxford continues to attract the most talented students and the most talented academics from across the globe. They convene here, as they have always done, to learn, to push at the frontiers of knowledge and to improve the world in which we find ourselves. One of the highlights of the past twelve months was that for the second consecutive year we were named the top university in the world by the Times Higher Education Global Rankings. While it is reasonable to be sceptical of the precise placements in these rankings, it is incontrovertible that we are universally acknowledged to be one of the greatest universities in the world. This is a privilege, a responsibility and a challenge. Other highlights include the opening of the world’s largest health big data institute, the Li Ka Shing Centre for Health Information and Discovery, and the launch of OSCAR – the Oxford Suzhou Centre for Advanced Research – a major new research centre in Suzhou near Shanghai. In addition, the Ashmolean’s success in raising £1.35 million to purchase King Alfred’s coins, which included support from over 800 members of the public, was a cause for celebration. The pages that follow detail just some of the extraordinary research being conducted here on perovskite solar cells, indestructible tardigrades and driverless cars.
