JG Participant/Parent Information & Release Of May 2015 Dear Junior/Little Guard Parents & Participants, Welcome to the summer of 2015! My name is Paul Steinberg and I am happy to return as the Lieutenant for the City of Santa Cruz Junior Lifeguard program. This year I am joined by JG Lifeguard II’s Henry Tobias and Alex Scott. I have been a part of the program for the last twenty years and I am looking forward to another educational and fun-filled summer! Before we get started I wanted to send a letter giving you some important information and dates to help you plan your summer. • The parent orientation meeting is scheduled for Saturday, May 30th, from 9:00 am - 10:00 am, at Cowell Beach. The meeting will take place at the same venue the Junior Lifeguard program is located (if you are unfamiliar with this area, it is in front of the Dream Inn Hotel and adjacent to the Santa Cruz Municipal Wharf). We will be talking about important information such as parking, competitions, uniforms, and answering any questions you may have. Directly after the meeting, from 10:00am – 12:00pm, the JG Parent Booster Club will be selling Official Junior Guard sweatshirts, sweatpants, red boardshorts and hats. Purchases may be made by check, cash, or credit card. Checks payable to: “FOPAR”. • JG Participant/Parent Information & Release of Liability form (pink card) in this packet must be turned in prior to participating! Please fill out a separate form for each child if you have in the program. Additional forms will be available at the parent meeting. • Jr. Guard Participants (9-17yrs. only) must also sign up for the USLA on the form attached to the last page of this packet and include a check for $10 made payable to “SCSLSA”. • Return forms at the May 30th parent meeting, or mail them to: City of Parks and Rec. (Attn: Junior Guards), 323 Church St. Santa Cruz, CA 95060 or bring them the first day of the program. Forms must be turned in prior to participating. • All participants are required to wear a RED swimsuit and pass an ocean swim test the first day (or 1st week) of the program to earn their Jr. Lifeguard patch. Little Guards will be required to enter and exit the ocean on their own and dive/duck under the water to earn their Little Guard patch. It is important to know that Little & Junior Lifeguard’s is not a learn-to-swim program. The physical requirements are listed in the Summer Parks and Recreation Activity Guide and any other questions can be addressed on an individual basis at the parent meeting; or download the Parent Handbook at www.cityofsantacruz.com/guards. • Session One – June 17 to July 14. Picture Day is July 1th • Session Two – July 20 to August 14. Picture Day is July 28th Call the Jr. Lifeguard phone line (831) 420-6248, if you have questions. I will check messages weekly until the first day of program. Thank you and see you this summer. Lt. Group activities are vital to our program. A participant that is disruptive to group activities and disrespectful to instructors diminishes the enjoyment and education of the other participants. The intent of discipline is to instruct the participant so as to gain compliance with the acceptable behavior norms. Therefore, please familiarize yourself with the following expectations: • Arriving on time and being promptly picked up from the program • Respect of Instructors and other staff • Respect of other participants: no shoving, hitting, or name-calling. • Respect of the facilities, equipment and property of others. • Cooperate with others. • Practice good sportsmanship. • Follow all safety rules and all instructions. • Listen quietly to directions/announcements. • Participate daily in regular program activities. The progressive steps of discipline are as follows: 1. When a minor discipline situation occurs, the participant will be counseled about the situation and given an explanation of what behavior change is expected. 2. If a subsequent incident occurs, the participant will be asked to take a “TIME OUT” or “TAKE A LAP.” A time out is a period of five to ten minutes that the participant spends quietly reflecting on the incident. A “TAKE A LAP “ is a supervised swim or run of reasonable distance. After the “TIME OUT” or “TAKE A LAP” the participant is allowed to rejoin in the group activity. 3. When a participant has a series of “TIME OUT’S” or “TAKE A LAP’S” in the same day or a series of discipline situations over several days, the Lead instructor will inform the youth’s parent or guardian about the situation.

Chapter 7 APPLICATIONS OF COMPRESSION SPORTSWEAR Praburaj Venkatraman and David Tyler Table of contents 1. Introduction 2. Background and rationale 3. Compression and its influence on physiology 4. Compression for medical uses 5. Evaluation of compression for sportswear 5.1 Effects of using compression garments 6. Application of compression sportswear 6.1Cycling 6.2 Skiing 6.3 Rugby 7 Market trends in compression sportswear 8 Contextual factors affecting compression garment performance 1. Garment sizing 2. Body shape 3. Sizing and designing with stretch fabrics 4. Fabric panels 9 Summary and conclusions 10 References 1.0 INTRODUCTION Sport and exercise involves physical movement of the body (torso, upper and lower limbs) and, in some cases, amateurs and professionals alike endure soft tissue injury. At the elite level, improved individual performance during a tournament or a game is vital. Many athletes consider that compression of muscles to support, enhance muscle alignment and improve the efficiency of muscle movements is essential. They also adopt the adage of strapping the injured part to assist recovery from injury. In recent years, there has been an increase in usage and demand for compression garments for a 1 number of sportswear applications and recreational activities due to their ability to offer functional support to the wearer. The main aim of this chapter is to present research relating to compression garments and highlight the recent developments relating to specific sports such as cycling, skiing and rugby. The benefits of compression garments were documented in various settings (sports, clinical and non-clinical), although convincing evidence remains elusive. The reported benefits of using compression garments were mainly in enhancing blood circulation, reducing the recurrence of injury, aiding recovery, providing muscle support and reducing muscle soreness.
