Ryan Reference: IT-11/06 INTRODUCTION Article 35 of the Euratom Treaty requires that each Member State shall establish facilities necessary to carry out continuous monitoring of the levels of radioactivity in air, water and soil and to ensure compliance with the basic safety standards (1). Article 35 also gives the European Commission (EC) the right of access to such facilities in order that it may verify their operation and efficiency. For the EC, the Directorate-General for Energy (DG ENER) and in particular its Radiation Protection Unit (at the time of the visit ENER.D.4, now ENER.D.3) is responsible for undertaking these verifications. The main purpose of verifications performed under Article 35 of the Euratom Treaty is to provide an independent assessment of the adequacy of monitoring facilities for: - Liquid and airborne discharges of radioactivity into the environment by a site (and control thereof). - Levels of environmental radioactivity at the site perimeter and in the marine, terrestrial and aquatic environment around the site, for all relevant pathways. - Levels of environmental radioactivity on the territory of the Member State. Taking into account previous bilateral protocols, a Commission Communication has been published in the Official Journal on 4 July 2006 with a view to define some practical arrangements for the conduct of Article 35 verification visits in Member States. -

Thanks to that thesis, my interest for medieval history grew and I decided to start the master Eternal Rome. That thesis also made me more enthusiastic about the history of the Vikings, and especially the Vikings who entered the Mediterranean. In the History Channel series Vikings, Björn Ironside decides to go towards the Mediterranean, and I was wondering in what why this affected the status of Vikings. While reading literature about this conquest, there was not a clear matter to investigate. Continuing reading, the matter of the Normans who settled in Italy came across. The literature made it clear, on some levels, why the Normans came to Italy. -

5 MARCH 2020 Engineering: Archimedes of Syracuse Professor Edith Hall Archimedes and Hiero II’s Syracuse Archimedes was and remains the most famous person from Syracuse, Sicily, in history. He belonged to the prosperous and sophisticated culture which the dominantly Greek population had built in the east of the island. The civilisation of the whole of ancient Sicily and South Italy was called by the Romans ‘Magna Graecia’ or ‘Great Greece’. The citis of Magna Graecia began to be annexed by the Roman Republic from 327 BCE, and most of Sicily was conquered by 272. But Syracuse, a large and magnificent kingdom, the size of Athens and a major player in the politics of the Mediterranean world throughout antiquity, succeeded in staying independent until 212. This was because its kings were allies of Rome in the face of the constant threat from Carthage. Archimedes was born into this free and vibrant port city in about 287 BCE, and as far as we know lived there all his life. When he was about twelve, the formidable Hiero II came to the throne, and there followed more than half a century of peace in the city, despite momentous power struggles going on as the Romans clashed with the Carthaginians and Greeks beyond Syracuse’s borders. Hiero encouraged arts and sciences, massively expanding the famous theatre. Archimedes’ background enabled him to fulfil his huge inborn intellectual talents to the full. His father was an astronomer named Pheidias. He was probably sent to study as a young man to Alexandria, home of the famous library, where he seems to have became close friend and correspondent of the great geographer and astonomer Eratosthenes, later to become Chief Librarian. -

Series: John’s Letters Title: My Identity in Christ Text: 1 John 5:1-4 Date: June 27, 2021 Verse 1 In the first verse of chapter 5, John aimed to remind his readers of their identity in Christ. He said, “Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and everyone who loves the Father also loves the one born of him” (1 John 5:1). The word translated “born” referred to a spiritual type of birth. It was used of an event we often call “regeneration.” Jesus spoke of the event in John’s gospel, saying, “Truly I tell you, unless someone is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God” (John 3:3). One theologian has defined regeneration as “The action of the Holy Spirit, who transforms the lives of those given the gift of faith so they experience a ‘new birth’ and salvation through Jesus Christ.”1 Another has described the concept, saying it is “a secret act of God in which he imparts new spiritual life to us; sometimes called ‘being born again.’”2 Paul referenced regeneration when he told Titus, “He saved us—not by works of righteousness that we had done, but according to his mercy— through the washing of regeneration and renewal by the Holy Spirit” (Titus 3:5). Interestingly, John spoke of the act of regeneration with a passive voice verb, using what Bible scholars often call “the divine passive.” His intent was to depict the act of regeneration as being performed upon a person. The new birth is something accomplished by God and God alone. -

Map 44 Latium-Campania Compiled by N. Purcell, 1997 Introduction The landscape of central Italy has not been intrinsically stable. The steep slopes of the mountains have been deforested–several times in many cases–with consequent erosion; frane or avalanches remove large tracts of regolith, and doubly obliterate the archaeological record. In the valley-bottoms active streams have deposited and eroded successive layers of fill, sealing and destroying the evidence of settlement in many relatively favored niches. The more extensive lowlands have also seen substantial depositions of alluvial and colluvial material; the coasts have been exposed to erosion, aggradation and occasional tectonic deformation, or–spectacularly in the Bay of Naples– alternating collapse and re-elevation (“bradyseism”) at a staggeringly rapid pace. Earthquakes everywhere have accelerated the rate of change; vulcanicity in Campania has several times transformed substantial tracts of landscape beyond recognition–and reconstruction (thus no attempt is made here to re-create the contours of any of the sometimes very different forerunners of today’s Mt. Vesuvius). To this instability must be added the effect of intensive and continuous intervention by humanity. Episodes of depopulation in the Italian peninsula have arguably been neither prolonged nor pronounced within the timespan of the map and beyond. Even so, over the centuries the settlement pattern has been more than usually mutable, which has tended to obscure or damage the archaeological record. More archaeological evidence has emerged as modern urbanization spreads; but even more has been destroyed. What is available to the historical cartographer varies in quality from area to area in surprising ways. -

The Lynn White Controversy
CHRISTIANITY AND THE ENVIRONMENT: THE LYNN WHITE CONTROVERSY Emily Warde “And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitftd and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.” (Genesis 1:28) N 1966 the historian Lynn White, Jr. delivered an address to the IAmerican Association for the Advancement of Science in which he bluntly asserted that Christianity “bears a huge burden of guilt for the devastation of nature in which the West has been engaged for centuries.” The address was published as an article in the journal Science in 1967. White’s work was controversial in academic and theological circles, and its impact even extended into popular culture. His ideas inspired a vibrant and long-lasting debate, and many scholars subsequently weighed in — some supporting, some revising, and others rejecting the White thesis. Although White first intro duced his thesis in 1966, the debate surrounding his ideas became most notable in the early 19705, spurred on by the prominence of the environmental question in this era. Scholars faced with a surge in concern for the environment in society at large, in their search for the intellectual roots of the crisis, necessarily encountered the White thesis. Although interest in the White argument extended into the 198os and in fact continues in the present, I am concerned here with this earlier era, especially as exemplified by the publication of Ecology and Religion in History in 1974, a book devoted entirely to a scholarly response to White. -
