The work revolves around two loci: the relationship between history and philosophy in the analysis of key concepts such as liberty, democracy and toleration, and the role of reason in political science’s explanations. Despite a background in PPE, the author played a major role in the ‘historical’ revolution in political theory and his contributions to and reflections on this are included in the volume. ISBN: 9781907301704 Varieties of Political Experience Gianfranco Poggi The management of contemporary public affairs involves many different centres of social power, engaged in complex and mutable relations, ranging from willing co-operation, to competition, to out-and-out conflict. This book emphasises the role played in these relations by political institutions in particular. But it also considers the relations between politics at one end, and law, the public sphere, citizenship, and religion at the other. ISBN: 9781907301759 Choice, Rules and Collective Action: The Ostroms on the study of institutions and governance Elinor Ostrom and Vincent Ostrom Edited by Filippo Sabetti and Paul Dragos Aligica Key works by Elinor Ostrom, co-recipient of the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences, and Vincent Ostrom, one of the originators of public-choice political economy. The selection represents the main analytical and conceptual vehicles articulated by the Ostroms to create the Bloomington School of Public Choice. The Ostroms’ endeavours sought to ‘re-establish the priority of theory over data collection and analysis’ and to better integrate theory and practice. Her research centres on the historical study of culture, democratic politics, economic policy, and the constitution of political authority. Her work has been published in the American Journal of Sociology, Annual Review of Sociology, Social Science History and the Socio-Economic Review. This paper draws in part from a book manuscript titled Neoliberal Politics, which offers an account of the causes and longer-term effects of the third way era in centre-left politics in Western democracies. An earlier version was presented on June 20, 2013 at the Society for the Advancement of Socio-economics’ (SASE) mini-conference on “Economic Culture in the Public Sphere” in Milan, organised by Lyn Spillman and Fred Wherry. ISSN 2052-000X Published in February 2014 SPERI Paper No.9 – The Social Bases of Austerity 1 Before the election of 1932 … there was a majority in the Riksdag consisting of conservatives, liberals, and members of the farmer party, convinced that the budget should be balanced according to the traditional method and that for this reason the plans of the labor party for large public works, financed by borrowing, should be defeated.

  • The Committee on Economic Cooperation and Development
The Committee on Economic Cooperation and Development 2 “The central challenge in develop- ment cooperation is and remains for the state, businesses and society to work together to provide impe- tus to people in partner countries to help themselves. We can achieve this if we cooperate globally to bring about a shift away from short-term crisis management and towards a strategy of sustainable development. Local populations need to muster the creative power to make the most of their potential. The members of the Committee put their confidence in committed people who work to create a decent future in their home countries.” Dr Peter Ramsauer, CDU/CSU Chairman of the Committee on Economic Cooperation and Development 3 The German Bundestag’s decisions are prepared by its committees, which are estab- lished at the start of each elec- toral term. Four of them are stipulated by the Basic Law, the German constitution: the Committee on Foreign Affairs, the Defence Committee, the Committee on the Affairs of the European Union and the Petitions Committee. The Budget Committee and the Committee for the Rules of Procedure are also required by law. The spheres of respon- sibility of the committees essentially reflect the Federal Government’s distribution of ministerial portfolios. This enables Parliament to scruti- nise the government’s work effectively. The Bundestag committees The German Bundestag sets political priorities of its own by establishing additional committees for specific sub- jects, such as sport, cultural affairs or tourism. In addition, special bodies such as parlia- mentary advisory councils, The committees discuss and committees of inquiry or deliberate on items referred study commissions can also to them by the plenary.

  • Fredrik Reinfeldt
2014 Press release 03 June 2014 Prime Minister's Office REMINDER: German Chancellor Angela Merkel, British Prime Minister David Cameron and Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte to Harpsund On Monday and Tuesday 9-10 June, Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt will host a high-level meeting with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, British Prime Minister David Cameron and Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte at Harpsund. The European Union needs to improve job creation and growth now that the EU is gradually recovering from the economic crisis. At the same time, the EU is facing institutional changes with a new European Parliament and a new European Commission taking office in the autumn. Sweden, Germany, the UK and the Netherlands are all reform and growth-oriented countries. As far as Sweden is concerned, it will be important to emphasise structural reforms to boost EU competitiveness, strengthen the Single Market, increase trade relations and promote free movement. These issues will be at the centre of the discussions at Harpsund. Germany, the UK and the Netherlands, like Sweden, are on the World Economic Forum's list of the world's ten most competitive countries. It is natural, therefore, for these countries to come together to compare experiences and discuss EU reform. Programme points: Monday 9 June 18.30 Chancellor Merkel, PM Cameron and PM Rutte arrive at Harpsund; outdoor photo opportunity/door step. Tuesday 10 June 10.30 Joint concluding press conference. Possible further photo opportunities will be announced later. Accreditation is required through the MFA International Press Centre. Applications close on 4 June at 18.00.

  • Who Is Who in Impeding Climate Protection
Who is Who in Impeding Climate Protection Links between politics and the energy industry The short route to climate collapse The UK meteorological offi ce forecast at the very beginning of the year that 2007 would be the warmest year since weather records began being made. The scientists there estimated that the global average temperature would be 0.54 degrees above the 14 degree average experienced over many years. The record so far, an average of 14.52 degrees, is held by 1998. 2005, which was similarly warm, went into the meteorologists’ record books on reaching an average of 14.65 degrees in the northern hemisphere. Findings made by the German meteorological service also confi rm the atmosphere to be warming. Shortly before the beginning of 2007 the service reported that the year 2006 had been one of the warmest years since weather records began being made in 1901, and the month of July had been the hottest ever since then. An average of 9.5 degrees was 1.3 degrees Celsius above the long-term average of 8.2 degrees. International climate experts are agreed that the global rise in temperature must stay below two degrees Celsius if the effects of climate change are to remain controllable. But the time corridor for the effective reduction of greenhouse gases damaging to the climate is getting narrower and narrower. In the last century already the Earth’s average temperature rose by 0.8 degrees. The experts in the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change anticipate a further rise of up to 6.4 degrees by 2100.
