In the United States this growth has been based on copyright infringement, where fans have subtitled anime series and released them as fansubs. In the absence of official releases fansubs have created the current popularity of anime, which companies can now benefit from. From the beginning the companies have tolerated and even encouraged the fan activity, partly because the fans have followed their own rules, intended to stop the distribution of fansubs after official licensing. The work explores the history and current situation of fansubs, and seeks to explain how these practices adopted by fans have arisen, why both fans and companies accept them and act according to them, and whether the situation is sustainable. Kouno Fumiyo’s In This Corner of the World (Kono sekai no kata- sumi ni) provides an excellent case to explore manga’s aesthetic materiality, last but not least because of its congenial adaptation to the animated movie of the same name directed by Katabuchi Sunao (Studio MAPPA, 2016).1 This movie attests to what John Guillory has pointed out in a different context, namely, that “[r]emediation makes the medium as such visible.”2 Conse- quently, it is used below as a foil to highlight how Kouno’s manga conjoins different materialities in a medium- specific way resting on the drawn line, print on paper, and the serial format of the narrative. This article pursues manga mediality from the angle of materiality to ap- proach forms as aesthetic affordances without reiterating a decontextualized formalism modeled on modernist notions of authorship and autonomous art.

    Gender Equality for Sustainable Development: Focus on Interpreting Gender Relation in YAOI Doujinshi Love Heat at Tropical Island P A Dewi Faculty of Humanities, Universitas Bina Nusantara, Jakarta, Indonesia [email protected] ABSTRACT The present study examines the negotiation of gender identity in the Japanese YAOI genre by focusing on the YAOI doujinshi (fan-made manga consisting of love stories between two male characters) titled, Love Heat at Tropical Island. More specifically, based on Kitzinger’s concept of heterosexuality and Yomota’s basic manga character codes, this study performs a textual analysis of the comic panels in order to determine how the authors (in this case, the Indonesian fujoshi) depict their vision of gender relation negotiation. The findings show that the negotiation of gender relation in the work is transnational, i.e., the acculturation of Japanese, Indonesian, and Western gender identity. Based on United Nation data many developing countries still struggle to achieve gender equality in their daily life, one of them is Indonesia. One of the problem achieving gender equality in Indonesia is gender-based stereotype in gender relation. Patriarchal ideology still prevalence in the interaction between men and women in Indonesia. Gender roles stereotype between men and women still controlled the majority of socio-cultural life. But, with the advance and the development of communication and technology such as the internet emerge virtual space to give and take opinions and ideology from people around the globe.

    Intercultural Communication Studies XIX: 1 2010 Chou Exploring the Meaning of Yaoi in Taiwan for Female Readers: From the Perspective of Gender Dienfang Chou, Tzu Chi University The purpose of this study is to explore the meaning of Yaoi in Taiwan. Yaoi is a Japanese phrase that describes a group of females who enjoy creating and reading the male homosexual comic books or novels. This study uses an intensive interview method to examine the meanings behind the females’ enjoyment of reading Yaoi texts. Based on the literature, this study uses the perspective of genders to examine the interview data by six concepts: reciprocity, substitution, and social taboos in love relationships as well as conversion, initiative, and wantonness in sexual discourse. The result of this study shows that the primary meanings to Yaoi readers are: to practice the doubts from the established gender conventions; to enjoy the freedom from breaking free of gender constraints through those stories without any gender differences; to gain joy and satisfaction by crossing the standard gender norms through fictional homosexual love stories. Limitations and suggestions for future research are discussed as well. Boy’s Love (BL) is one kind of male homosexual romantic love story, usually written and read by women, that exists in the form of comics and novels in Taiwan. These kinds of stories originated from the non-professional creation and adaptation of parody works in the 1970s in Japan. These adapted works were privately published without the jurisdiction and supervision of publishing houses together with the adaptation of well-known works. Therefore, there was no need to spend time and effort laying out the plot before directly getting to the bold description of explicit sex.
