While perfect vision is 20/20, this year has been anything but clear. It kicked off with the macular degeneration, if you will, of the COVID pandemic and the resulting quarantine that we’ve all had to endure. It continued with the cataracts of political and social unrest, religious persecution, disastrous hurricanes, and all the usual antics that come with any presidential election year. This has all resulted in feelings of anxiety, anger, and frustration. And, for us here in the Archdiocese of New Orleans, the recent scandals have ushered in disbelief and served as a stark reminder that the Devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour (1 Peter 5:8). As each day passes, we can’t help but ask ourselves, What’s next?

For me, in particular, it came with a phone call from Archbishop Aymond and the news of my reassignment to parochial vicar at St. Margaret Mary in Slidell, effective November 1st. You may know that their parochial vicar was recently installed as pastor of St. Luke's, thus leaving an open spot that needed to be filled. I graciously accepted, honored at the level of trust that Archbishop Aymond is placing me, but the reality of my leaving this St. Angela family much sooner than expected has also saddened me greatly.

I take with me so many amazing memories, fueled by all the love you have shown me over these fifteen months as your parochial vicar. To me, this has driven home some other words of St. Peter: Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that in due time he may exalt you. Cast all your anxieties on him, for he cares about you (1 Peter 5:6-7). He has exalted and cared for me through you, through Fr. Beau, and through the parish and school staff, and I am forever grateful for this. It has been an honor to serve you in this capacity, and I now look forward to serving the good people at St. Margaret Mary, continuing to place my trust in God’s divine will, His infinite goodness, and His steadfast faithfulness.

Many blessings to you all, and please be assured of my prayers!

A reading from the Book of the Prophet Isaiah

Thus says the LORD to his anointed, Cyrus, whose right hand I grasp, subduing nations before him, and making kings run in his service, opening doors before him and leaving the gates unbarred: For the sake of Jacob, my servant, of Israel, my chosen one, I have called you by your name, giving you a title, though you knew me not. I am the LORD and there is no other, there is no God besides me. It is I who arm you, though you know me not, so that toward the rising and the setting of the sun people may know that there is none besides me. I am the LORD, there is no other.

The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

R. (7b) Give the Lord glory and honor. Sing to the LORD a new song; sing to the LORD, all you lands. Tell his glory among the nations; among all peoples, his wondrous deeds. R. Give the Lord glory and honor. For great is the LORD and highly to be praised; awesome is he, beyond all gods. For all the gods of the nations are things of nought, but the LORD made the heavens. R. Give the Lord glory and honor. Give to the LORD, you families of nations, give to the LORD glory and praise; give to the LORD the glory due his name! Bring gifts, and enter his courts. R. Give the Lord glory and honor. Worship the LORD, in holy attire; tremble before him, all the earth; say among the nations: The LORD is king, he governs the peoples with equity. R. Give the Lord glory and honor.

A reading from the Letter of St. Paul to the Thessalonians

Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy to the church of the Thessalonians in God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ: grace to you and peace. We give thanks to God always for all of you, remembering you in our prayers, unceasingly calling to mind your work of faith and labor of love and endurance in hope of our Lord Jesus Christ, before our God and Father, knowing, brothers and sisters loved by God, how you were chosen. For our gospel did not come to you in word alone, but also in power and in the Holy Spirit and with much conviction.

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

R. Alleluia, alleluia. Shine like lights in the world as you hold on to the word of life. R. Alleluia, alleluia

The Lord be with you. And with your spirit. A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew Glory to you, O Lord.

The Pharisees went off They replied, "Caesar's." and plotted how they might entrap Jesus in speech. At that he said to them, They sent their disciples to him, with the Herodians, "Then repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar saying, "Teacher, we know that you are a truthful and to God what belongs to God." man and that you teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. And you are not concerned with anyone's opinion, The Gospel of the Lord for you do not regard a person's status. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. Tell us, then, what is your opinion: Is it lawful to pay the census tax to Caesar or not?" Knowing their malice, Jesus said, "Why are you testing me, you hypocrites? Show me the coin that pays the census tax." Then they handed him the Roman coin. He said to them, "Whose image is this and whose inscription?"

To the Clergy, Religious, and Laity of the Archdiocese of New Orleans:

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ:

Each October Catholics throughout the United States come together to celebrate Respect Life Month. As Catholics, we are called each and every day to work for a Culture of Life that respects the dignity of all human life and in a particular way those who are most vulnerable, from the beginning of life in the womb to natural death. During the month of October, we are asked in a special way to pray and reflect more deeply and take action to support the dignity of every human life.

This year's Respect Life Month theme is inspired by the 25th Anniversary of St. John Paul II's encyclical, The Gospel of Life. The theme 'Live the Gospel of Life,' is a call to action for us to heed St. John Paul II's call to defend the right to life for children in their mothers' wombs, those who are sick and close to death, persons with disabilities, the marginalized, and all those treated unjustly because of race. This call is as relevant today as it was when written over two decades ago.

Let us pray that during this Respect Life Month we will be strengthened in our efforts to cherish and protect the gift of every human life from Join us! The Catholic Community Foundation and conception to natural death. Notre Dame Seminary are co-hosting the Fall 2020 Catholic Lens Series: Living the Gospel in a Thank you for joining me in your promotion of life Fractured Culture.
