NEW COMPUTERS

The new system is installed and up and running. We still need to pay for it, and so we’re asking you to help with the cost via a special envelope collection. Said envelopes are at the ends of the pews…I think you know what to do with them. And please accept our thanks for your help in keeping us apace with the 21st century!

IN HONOR OF OUR PATRONESS, ST. ANGELA MERICI

Tomorrow, i.e., Monday, Jan. 27, is the feast day of our patroness, Angela Merici, foundress of the first order of teaching sisters (the ) and, thus also, the Catholic school system. And so to honor her and celebrate our magnificent parish spirit, we are going to have an evening of Italian cucina on the evening before, Sunday, Jan. 26, from 4:30-7:00PM (or until the food runs out) in our gym. Come sample the delicacies from sunny Italy and taste the wine vinted from St. Angela’s own vineyard. (And bring all your friends and family!) Mangiamo, tutti! (And don’t forget to come to Mass and give her feast a proper celebration tomorrow!)

CATHOLIC MEN FOR CHRIST

Once again, this event takes place next Saturday (Feb. 1) at the Touhill Center at UMSL. An anonymous do- nor has given us funds for anybody who would like to go, but is a bit strapped for cash. If that’s you, let me know ASAP!

CANDLEMAS

Next Sunday, Feb. 2, is the feast of the Presentation of the Lord, popularly known as “Candlemas”. It takes place 40 days after Jesus’ Nativity, and commemorates that day when the Lord was, in obedience to the Jewish law, presented to the Lord in His Temple, while the Blessed Virgin was “purified” after giving birth. Traditional- ly, it’s also the day when the candles used in church throughout the year are blessed (hence the nickname, “Candlemas”). Since it is a major feast of the Lord, it will supplant the usual Sunday Mass. That means that we will begin Mass with a special procession with burning candles (the same as are used on Holy Saturday) in order to welcome Him who is the Light of the World.

QUIZ-A-CATHOLIC

Let’s make this one a “whodunnit”. It will be your task to identify the figure in Catholic history, or otherwise, who introduced a traditional, well-known practice or observance of the . So, who was the person who…

1. Introduced the rosary to the Church, having received it from the Blessed Mother herself 2. Gave us the devotion of walking the Stations of the Cross 3. Gave us the Creche, i.e., the practice of having a representation of the scene of the Birth of the Lord in Bethlehem in church at Christmas time 4. Gave us the feast of the Holy Rosary, in thanksgiving for the victory at Lepanto 5. Founded the Catholic School system by establishing the first order of teaching sisters 6. Began the practice of the parish “mission”, i.e., having a “missioner” priest come to visit the Parish for a week of spiritual renewal 7. Instituted the rule which became the standard of all Western monastic life in the Church 8. Came up with the “IHS” logo for the Holy Name of Jesus 9. Initiated our current form of devotion to the Sacred heart of Jesus 10. Invented bingo (in its present popular form)

Now that all the Christmas decorations are packed away for another year, it’s time to start thinking about the SVDP truck collection this Spring! Put a box in the basement and every time you come across something in the house that you think you really don’t need anymore, just put it in the box. We’ll be collecting cloth- ing, toys, household items, etc. If you have a lit- tle time on your hands, the SVDP Thrift Shop in Paddock Plaza is always looking for volunteer help at the store. Whatever time you can spare they appreciate it. Tell them which parish you’re from & your work will be credited to our confer- ence. Thanks to everyone who donated to the January Food Drive. We put our faith into ac- tion by helping the poor among us.
