UNDERSTANDING HOMESCHOOL BASED FAITH FORMATION

FOR PRE-K through 5th Grades

The Church teaches that parents are the first and primary educators of their children in the faith. Some parents, in fulfilling this role, will choose to decline the assistance of parish catechetical programs and provide systematic catechesis in their homes. Some families also home-school their children in their academic subjects as well as their catechetical formation, while for others this is a decision limited exclusively to their faith formation.

Parents of children who receive systematic catechesis in their home are strongly encouraged to visit the parish and have a discussion with the parish catechetical leader. Leaders have been provided guidelines about how to proceed with this endeavor. Parents are to be provided a textbook which correlates to the child's age and is the same textbook used in the parish religious education program. Cardinal DiNardo has directed that those books that serve as primary resources for catechetical instruction be among the texts reviewed by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, Committee to Oversee the use of the Catechism, and found to be in conformity with the Cate- chism of the Catholic Church.

The parish catechetical leader will want to have a conversation with the child(ren) to determine readiness for the ap- propriate grade level. The leader will request parents bring the child in on a regular basis (perhaps monthly, maybe at the end of a textbook unit, etc.) to "check-in" regarding progress and to see if there are any parental needs.

We are still in NEED of Catechists and Aides!!

TWENTY-THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

How oen when asked to do something for another do you respond, “Yes I want to help, but first I have to…” Or, when aer making a resoluon to be more aenve to your health, you look at the steak and dessert on the menu and say to yourself, “Yes I want to preserve my God-given health, but tomorrow…” Our self-sacrificing acons and good inten- ons are oen easily placed on the back burner. In today’s Gospel Jesus tells the crowd that there are no “buts” or “back burners” when it comes to following Him. Aware of what lies ahead for Himself, Jesus is impelled to cauon the crowd about the demands of discipleship. The three condions that He idenfies in the passage are no stroll on a sunny day. Using hyperbole Jesus reveals the first condion of discipleship is that we choose inmacy with Him above all others. Our relaonship with Jesus must come first. To really be a disciple then I cannot say “Yes, I choose inmacy with You above all others, but…have no me for prayer today.” The second condion is that we accept the suffering that comes with discipleship; actually embrace our suffering as gi, for giving witness to Jesus and to grow in our in- macy with the Lord. Because the cross calls us into trusng the deeper mysteries of life and God, to really be a disci- ple means I cannot say “Yes, I want to carry my cross and follow you, but…make sure I get that job today, or else...” The first two condions of discipleship in the Gospel are followed by two brief parables that challenge us to be aware of and to wisely assess our ability to meet the demands of discipleship, and lead us to Jesus’ third condion. We must be prepared to renounce all of our possessions. Jesus insists that to be His disciple demands a right-ordered disposion toward all things; one that loves all of life and creaon, and yet recognizes everything as gi from the Holy One. Just like the first two, this third condion requires self-sacrificing love that puts the Lord above all else in our life. To really be a disciple then I cannot say “Yes, I want to give all that I have to follow the Lord, but…my luxury car is more necessary than my support of those in need. In your heart are you really a “buts” or “back burner” responder to the Lord’s invitaons to deeper discipleship? Do you noce that too soon aer a retreat or prayer experience “high” your fire for the Lord fizzles? Maybe you are easily distracted by what gliers right in front of your eyes. It is me to pray for Divine wisdom and strength to choose inmacy with the Lord, to accept is cost, and to hold everything lightly as gi, so that you can respond posively and faithfully to Lord Jesus Christ as a true disciple. We need the help—discipleship is no stroll on a sunny day. kathleen⁺AMDG⁺

In order to help us all know more about our Church and to have an annually updat- ed Church directory, we have contracted the Guide Book Publishing to produce a “Guide Book & Directory.” The book will be direct mailed to every household in our Church and is being provided at no cost to our church. This Guide Book & Directo- ry is and shall remain property of this church and is intended for the private use of the members of this congregation only. Use of this book by anyone for a business purpose or for telephone or mail solicitations is strictly forbidden.

If you do not want your phone number and/or your address listed in this publication, please email the Church office at [email protected] by September 27, 2019.

Advertising Opportunity We are in the process of updating our annual Guide Book & Directory for the Church. This book will be the Who, What, Where, When, Why and How of our Congregation. The book is being provided at no cost to our Church, in- cluding the mailing to each family, and again is being subsidized by local businesses that advertise in it. If you own or manage a business and would like to find out about advertising in our book, please call the Church Office.

Recent survey results by Guide Book Publishing show that 92.1% of families would rather patronize a Guide Book & Directory advertiser over a non-advertiser. It “will pay” to advertise in our new Guide Book & Directory.

Update Membership Information Does our Church database have YOUR family membership record correct? It is time for us to update our database with any changes, additions, or deletions that may have occurred in YOUR family over the past year. Have you changed your phone number? Have you moved? Are you preparing to move soon? Do you want your record published?

If you have not already informed the Church Office about changes to your record, please let us know NO LATER THAN SEPTEMBER 27,2019 so that the information in the Guide Book & Directory is correct. Email [email protected]
