TWENTY-SEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
Although you can probably name the bank balance you want or the necessary SAT score your child needs, have you ever considered that the things of greatest value can’t be measured? They can be demonstrated, but the exact amount needed can’t be speci- fied. Faith is one of those things, and today’s scriptures highlight models of our faith who nonetheless strug- gled with their need for more of it. “How long O Lord?” Habakkuk laments in today’s First reading, as he challenged God’s seeming inac on in the midst of devasta ng injus ces in Judean society. God told Habakkuk to remember the promise and hold onto the faith he possesses. In our Second Reading St. Paul urges Timothy to s r the flame of his faith so that he can have the courage, power, and love he needs to fulfill his obliga ons as pastor of the commu- nity in Ephesus. And in our Gospel, we hear that even the Apostles thought they needed more faith as they became aware of the demands of radical discipleship. Jesus agreed. One wonders for any of them how much more faith would be sufficient? How much faith is enough? We iden fy with Habakkuk when we wait desperately for God to heal us or someone we love, for God to provide respite from unrelen ng family strife or challenges, for God to dispel the forces of evil and violence that threaten us and the whole world. How long O Lord? we pray hoping for the deepest desires of our heart. We need the flame of our faith s rred like Timothy when we are weary or feeling ineffec ve or overwhelmed, so that we can be sustained in our partnership with the Lord whatever our sta on in life. And o en enough like the Apostles we balk at, maybe even turn and run from, the invita- ons to greater, more encompassing rela onship with the Lord, fearful we don’t have what it takes, for- ge ng we are given everything we need, including faith, always to say “Yes!”. Which of our models of faith sounds most like you? Where you are challenged in your faith? Jesus reminds us that faith the size of a mustard seed can work wonders in this world. No ce that our Lord doesn’t seem at all concerned about the faith of Habakkuk, Timothy, or the Apostles. He simply encouraged them. Faith enables us to live more freely and joyfully. Free to accept the increased demands of every invita on to deeper partner- ship. Joyful that all will be well. Always. So be encouraged in your faith and beg for more. God has placed that desire in your heart and welcomes deeper rela onship with you. kathleen⁺AMDG⁺
TAKE IT TO HEART Lord, I do believe. Help my unbelief. Karl Rahner, SJ (1904-1984)
Echoing the words of the man with the son possessed by a mute spirit in Mark’s Gospel, the influen al 20th- century Catholic priest, professor, and theologian, Karl Rahner, in his own prayer and scholarship reminded himself and all of us that when we cry out those words, begging for mercy in our frailty and weaknesses, “not to take offense at our humanity.” We actually embody the very promise of God’s gracious victory in our very ordinariness. He said faith is the opposite of faint-heartedness, fear, and despondency.
