First – Steps for Receiving Communion In the Hand 1. Step up close to the priest 2. Bow your head 3. Hold out hands, with your right hand under your left hand  (If you are left-handed, put your left hand on the bottom) 4. When the priest says, “The ”, you say “AMEN!” loud enough so the priest can hear you. 5. The priest will place the host in your hand 6. While you are still standing in front of the priest, bring your right hand out from under your left. Use your right hand to pick up the host and put it in your mouth. 7. THEN turn from the priest to go receive the wine, or to return to your pew to kneel and pray

*Note: You do not have to make the after receiving. You are allowed to, but it is not required.

On the Tongue 1. Step up close to the priest 2. Bow your head 3. Keep your hands folded in prayer. 4. When the priest says, “The Body of Christ”, you say “AMEN!” loud enough so the priest can hear you. 5. Tilt your head up, open your mouth wide, and stick out your tongue just a little bit so it is over your teeth and bottom lip. 6. The priest will place the host on your tongue. 7. Wait until his fingers are out of the way to close your mouth. 8. THEN turn from the priest to go receive the wine, or to return to your pew to kneel and pray

*Note: You do not have to make the sign of the cross after receiving. You are allowed to, but it is not required.

If receiving the Precious Blood 1. Step up close to the Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion, with your hands in prayer. 2. Bow your head 3. When he or she says, “The ”, you say, “AMEN!” 4. The minister will hand you the . Take the chalice in both hands. Bring the chalice to your mouth and take just a tiny sip. Just enough to wet your tongue. 5. Hand the chalice back to the minister. 6. Return to your pew to kneel and pray

*Note: We believe that the fullness of Jesus Christ’s body, blood, soul, and divinity, is present in both the consecrated bread and wine. If you receive one, you receive the fullness of Christ. Therefore, you are not required to receive both, but you have the option. We let the children taste the wine at their First Communion practice, then they can decide if they want to receive it on their First Communion day.
