A Chennai supplier enters a different league, set to fulfil a market need

The licensing agreement with RBP Chemical Technology, a US-based world-class supplier of proprietary chemicals and delivery devices for the printing, newspaper and electronics manufacturing industries, has certainly given Chennai-based Kapoor Imaging a leg-up. The agreement will now enable it to offer many solutions under one roof – plates, blankets, inks and the complete range of pressroom chemicals. Significantly, the agreement will help Indian commercial and newspaper sheet-fed printers. They will now have access to a line of top quality pressroom chemistry supply options from a well-known and reliable Indian supplier. For Kapoor Imaging, a leading solutions provider in the graphic arts industry in India, it’s been a long and eventful journey. Almost three years ago at Printpack in New Delhi, I had met Varun Kapoor who represents the third generation at the company (he is the elder son of Sunil Kapoor, the MD). He was then trying to focus more on newspapers and was slowly getting into the equipment business such as CtP. He was quite enthusiastic and mentioned how he had introduced a central billing system, set up the company’s own warehouse at the Chennai Port, and was trying to promote a workflow software. Today, the young business graduate from the UK, I understand, heads Apollo Poly Vinyl, a Kapoor Digital vertical and is overseeing the process of starting manufacture of Flex material and foam boards. It is always heartening to hear about a young Indian entrepreneur blossom. Kapoor Imaging clients are split between commercial and newspaper segments. It is a distributor for Fujifilm in east, north and south India, and an exclusive distributor for Kinyo (offset blankets) in India. The company’s own brands include Press Aid+ (a range of chemicals) and Topaz (PS and thermal plates). Now, with the RBP tie-up, things can only be brighter for the company.

As this issue goes to print, the Press Institute of India and the International Committee of the Red Cross are all set to present the PII-ICRC Awards to journalists, in New Delhi. The subject chosen this time was Violence against Health Care Services and Personnel – Operating in the Face of Danger. The objective was to addresses the humanitarian challenges faced by health workers in the delivery of health care during armed violence. Events in recent weeks and months have led me thinking about the dangers journalists themselves face even as they discharge their duties. In Mali, two senior French journalists on a special assignment were kidnapped and killed two weeks ahead of legislative elections in the country. In Ethiopia, five journalists have been imprisoned under the country’s anti-terrorism laws. International media organisations have called for their unconditional release. A proposed new media law in Kenya risks imposing severe financial sanctions against journalists, publishers and broadcasters for breaching a code of conduct, and could even bar journalists from working. At another level, a group of leading global press freedom and media organisations have written an open letter to Queen Elizabeth II asking her to reject a proposed Royal Charter that would impose repressive statutory controls on the British press. In India, there have been rumblings of discontent within the media against various government strictures ahead of the elections. The conditions are rather disquieting and let us hope that this is only a passing phase. Sashi Nair [email protected]

December 2013 RIND Survey 9 Expanding frontiers... and the importance of Asia Founded in 1954, RBP Chemical Technology Inc (RBP) is a company is committed to delivering consistently high quality products and services, including research and development, analytical services and custom manufacturing. RBP Chemical Technology serves the pressroom printing, electronics chemistry and process chemicals industries. For over 50 years, it has delivered intelligent business solutions cantered on a customer-focused supply chain, technical competencies, unparalleled service support and continuous process improvement. With over 2000 active SKUs, the company is one of the largest suppliers of pressroom chemistry and products Mark Kannenberg. to the North American newspaper industry. Mark Kannenberg, president, has been at the helm of RBP Chemical Technology since 1985, setting the overall corporate direction and leading the executive and operations teams in driving continuous improvement throughout the company. His significant sales, marketing and operations experience in an international technology environment has led to several successful mergers and acquisitions and profitable global business developments. Kannenberg helped RBP establish a Total Quality Management (TQM) programme in 1992 and achieve ISO certification in 1999 and Lean Six Sigma in 2010. The company launched a new ultra concentrate earlier this year, adding to its Liquid Gold line well- known for superior ink and water control for producing cleaner, sharper print quality. Under the Intellicon brand, Liquid Gold UC is a more robust formulation that addresses many of the challenges found on- press. Concentrated more than twice as much as other products on the market and also completely homogenous, meaning they are uniform in structure or composition throughout, Liquid Gold UC enables coldset web printing operations to reconstitute the product to any desired amount onsite, resulting in more efficient product use. The company also offers FOGRA-approved products, which are specified by certain equipment manufacturers. RBP-sourced printing chemicals and pressroom supplies find a place in the most prominent newsprint and commercial print facilities in North America, China, India and South America. RBP has a wholly- owned division, RBP Technology (India) that has been manufacturing products for print and electronics in Mumbai since 2007. RBP’s PCB products are also manufactured by approved blenders in South Korea and Thailand. Printing chemicals and PCB fabrication products are sold and serviced by factory-trained sales and service representatives and distributors in North America and Asia. While in much of the developed world, print newspapers are suffering declining readership and revenue, India is experiencing significant growth. In 2009, Asia overall saw circulation gains of 1.03 per cent and is home to 67 of the 100 largest newspapers in the world. The gains were found at greater rates in nations such as India (5 per cent), says Kannenberg. An increase in newspaper advertising revenues of 13 per cent from 2008 to 2009 also support the idea that Asia, and specifically India, hold great potential. Growing populations in Asia contribute to this newspaper industry growth, and culture differences play a role as well. In India, for example, reading a print newspaper is perceived as a prestigious activity, RBP Chemicals found. Educated people read multiple papers which are printed in several languages, the company realised. Newspapers are supporting these countries’ efforts to improve their literacy rates as well, the company concludes. This has catalysed its interest in Asia. In comparison, the US newspaper publishing market has shrunk dramatically seeing an estimated 30 per cent drop in revenues from online and offline circulation and advertising in recent years. “Our population is not growing,” Kannenberg said. “Alternatively our desire for getting our information via online media with our very accessible computers and mobile devises is fierce.” The company is confident

that the processes and operations it employs to deliver world-class chemistry to its North American customers will translate to its expansion in India. <

10 RIND Survey December 2013 It’s DiamondSpirit SA for Malayala Manorama Mitsubishi has announced a sales contracts signing with Malayala Manorama Company for five lines of its new 4 x 1 newspaper offset press, the DiamondSprit SA, a newly developed press designed and manufactured specifically for the growing Indian and Asian markets. The first DiamondSpirit SA press for Malayala Manorama will be shipped around the autumn of 2014, and all remaining presses will be shipped in succession by late summer of 2015

ith press reliability positioned high among the most important design considerations in developing the new 4 x 1 DiamondSpirit SA, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Printing & Packaging WMachinery opted to implement many of the proven technologies of its DiamondStar (4 x 2) and DiamondSpirit (4 x 1) presses. Another essential design concept focused on higher ROI of the entire project cost, and this was successfully realised by applying a single around blanket cylinder design and by building a more compact press. Compared with the 4 x 1 DiamondSpirit press with double-around-blanket cylinders, the height of the tower printing unit has been reduced from 5.6m to 4.4m, and the weight of the unit reduced from 45t to 30t, while still retaining a rigid press structure. Consequently, the DiamondSpirit SA press can be installed in existing 2 x 1 press plants to reduce initial investment cost. In addition to initial installation cost savings, running cost savings can be realised as well. The compact press design reduces power consumption by 20 per cent, and Mitsubishi’s precise web tension control reduces start-up waste as well as print waste. The Mitsubishi 4 x 1 DiamondSpirit SA presses for Malayala Manorama are rated at 75000 cph with a cutoff of 546 mm (21.5 in) and a web width of 1400 mm (55 in). The press lines will be configured with four 4/4 tower printing units, one 1/1 tower printing unit, one 2:2 single rotary folder and five reelstands. The presses will be operated by the Mitsubishi press control system with automated features that include ink presetting with CTP interface, various press presets, automatic webbing up, automatic dual web tension control, automatic colour register Photos: Mitsubishi control and more. A 126-year-old newspaper

Malayala Manorama, the largest selling newspaper, was founded on March 14, 1888 by Kandathil Varghese Mappilai in Kottayam, Kerala. It began as a four-page weekly newspaper, published every Saturday. The weekly newspaper became a bi-weekly in 1901, a tri-weekly in 1918, and a daily in 1928. Today, Malayala Manorama is one of world’s largest daily newspapers with a circulation of 2.3 million copies a day. It is published from 18 printing centres: 11 centres in Kerala, five in Indian cities outside Kerala, and two located outside India. Malayala Manorama has been expanding its print business into magazines for decades. It now publishes more than 40 magazine titles in Malayalam as well as in English. The group is successfully spreading its wings into other media outlets to include the Internet (Manorama Online), and television (Manorama News) and radio (Radio Mango) broadcasting. As an example of its success, in

2007, Manorama Online was ranked the world’s third most popular online newspaper by the web information company Alexa, following The New York Times and The Washington Post. <

Dependability, performance tip the scales

At the printing facility in Greater Noida in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh, the course had already been set for expanding capacity in 2011 in order to satisfy the rising demand for daily newspapers in the capital New Delhi. Now, HT Media has installed two 80000-generation presses in addition to the three existing newspaper presses. Thanks to the positive experience gained during the longstanding collaboration with Ferag, the management team at HT Media has again decided in favour of a solution from the Swiss mailroom specialist. It was mainly the constant, high output achieved in combination with the existing presses at a maximum printing speed of 90000 copies an hour, plus the dependability of the technology in day-to-day operations, that tipped the scales in its favour. At both folder deliveries on the new presses, the daily newspapers are gripped and transported using the UTR Universal conveyor to the two MultiStack stackers on each mailroom line. On arrival there, conveniently sized bundles of the daily newspapers are produced, tuned to the respective route. Prior to sealing and cross-strapping, an underwrapper is fed to the bundles and a top sheet is printed inline with all relevant information pertaining to distribution. So as to offer their customers new advertising formats, both lines have

ustomers have shown their renewed commitment towards Kodak’s integrated thermal technologies. With accurate, stable, and repeatable thermal imaging, Kodak computer-to-plate C(CTP) devices are designed to meet the plate making needs of commercial and newspaper printers. The Kodak CTP solutions are modular, with a wide choice of automation, speed, and screening upgrade options, that helps maximise investment and grow business. One of the recent installations in the newspaper segment includes Saraswati Print Factory - printers of Sunmarg – based in Kolkata, who installed two Kodak Achieve 400 Platesetters. Uttarbanga , the largest circulated newspaper in North Bengal has also invested in the Kodak Trendsetter News Platesetter to enable them to print excellent image quality, increase efficiency and productivity. Speaking about the installation, Sabyasachi Talukdar, editor of Uttarbanga Sambad says, “Thermal technology is more reliable in terms of quality, consistency and performance, which were paramount parameters for us. The thermal technology does not require air-conditioning for transportation and storing of plates. Hence we opted for the Kodak thermal CTP as it also enables Photo: Kodak speed option from 42 plates to 70 plates.” The Kodak Trendsetter 800. Apart from the newspaper segment, Kodak observed success in the commercial segment with the installation of the third Kodak Trendsetter 800 Platesetter at Yorke Print based in Kolkata. York Print has been into the printing and packaging business for more than three decades. They started commercial production in November 2002 in Meghalaya and presently it is one of the India's largest manufacturers of printed folding cartons. Having installed the Kodak CTP Technology in its Guwahati and Kolkata units, they invested in the third Kodak Trendsetter 800 Platesetter to support their expansion plans. Further, the Kodak Trendsetter 400 Platesetter was installed at Janambhumi Press in Guwahati for its commercial division; they chose Kodak Thermal technology and placed its second order for the Kodak Trendsetter News Platesetter to cater to its newspaper Division. Subroto Sharma, managing director of Janambhumi Press, says “We have chosen Kodak Thermal CTP technology as its speed as well as the size is upgradeable, which is a very important factor in today’s changing print scenario.” Adds Aloke Hazarika, regional sales manager - East, Kodak India: “Customers are keen to harp on the benefits provided by Kodak Thermal technology due to its consistent performance and round the clock service over the years. This shows customers continued

Blending output from the Kodak Nexpress SX3300 Digital Production Colour Press with output from the Kodak Prosper 5000XLi Press, the book showcases the two leading imaging technologies and the ability of Kodak Solutions to provide high quality and low cost for book publishers. “This was a very unique production approach, using both electrophotographic and inkjet printing technology in one project,” explains Will Mansfield, Kodak’s marketing director for Inkjet Printing Solutions. “The publishing market is increasingly turning to short-run business models, and this book is a perfect example of the quality that can be achieved with our latest digital printing technology. With the right solutions, short runs can be cost effective, and publishers can mix and match the best solutions to achieve the desired results. Being part of this particular Photo: Kodak. project was a very rewarding opportunity to bring our technology to bear on an important issue.” The Rockaways cover page. Officially launched by the Concord Free Press recently at an event in New York City, The Rockaways will be available at no charge through independent bookstores, museums, and on the Internet. Organisers ask that recipients donate to a Sandy-related aid organisation, another charity, or someone in need, and then pass the book on to another reader so that he or she can donate as well. One of the important benefits of using digital printing for these books is the ability to sequentially number each individual copy so that readers can track donations via the Concord Free Press website. “The Concord Free Press is on the outer edge of the publishing world, exploring new ideas and approaches, challenging assumptions, and creating books that matter—like The Rockaways,” says Stona

December 2013 RIND Survey 19 Boosting efficiency, minimising set-up times VPM Druck KG in Rastatt has recently invested in new gatherer-stitcher technology from Ferag

PM Druck KG in Rastatt, a fully owned subsidiary of the Bauer Media Group, has recently invested in new gatherer-stitcher technology from Ferag. The existing Ferag technology dating Vfrom 1992 had been in use for far longer than planned, and the time had come to replace it. A further reason: the old technology was no longer sufficiently flexible, and the set-up times were therefore too long. Moreover, the trend towards low circulations is increasingly evident. From the initial brainstorming sessions to actual realisation, the project to invest in a new gatherer-stitcher installation and press deliveries lasted almost three years. Product sales patterns demanded a completely new concept. The installation commenced at the beginning of May 2013 and was concluded at VPM Druck with no breaks in production. Commissioning was Photos: Ferag complete by the start of September 2013. Apart from a Rima log delivery system, the Impressive volumes of magazines and periodicals are processed at VPM Druck. installation comprises a Ferag UniDrum gatherer stitcher drum with six JetFeeder hoppers, an EasySert inserting system with three JetFeeder supplement hoppers and an SNT-50 trimming drum - all from Ferag. At VPM Druck, the newly developed Unicover cover hopper is being integrated into a live production line for the first time. On the UniCover cover hopper, sheets are creased, folded and fedtothe UniDrum as covers at speeds up to 40,000 copies an hour. The new UniCover reduces the number of production steps, and therefore personnel costs.. PreTronic fully automatic format presetting from Ferag is a further function of the new installation and helps meet the requirement for fast set-up times. Thanks to the PreTronic control, the changeover from one job to the next is accomplished in a just few minutes. The new Ferag installation reduces the previous set-up time of two to four hours per job down to 30 minutes.
