$1.00 "There are two ways to get to the Hall Of Fame... Drive to Cooperstown or master the basics!" The Petro-Canada Play Ball Program is all about the basics, it gives coaches and instructors easy-to-follow methods on teach ing fundamentals. Pros like Duke Snider. Canadian Baseball Hall of Famer. Claude Raymond, Jimy Williams, Buck Rodgers, Jimmy Key and Hubie Brooks bring it to life. Each season more Canadian kids get involved in Play Ball. Some play on teams sponsored by local Petro-Canada dealers while others learn from the Play Ball instructional video. And last year over 75.000 young ballplayers took part in our "do-it-yourself” clinics run by local coaches and instructors. This year we've added instructional coaches clinics across the country as well as sponsoring special Play Ball Pitching Exhibitions which will visit communities from coast to coast. You can get involved in a great program. One dedicated to teaching young ball players the basics.

Jim comes to the London Majors with a wealth of knowledge and experience in the Inter-county. Jim started as a player in 1966 as a pitcher, first baseman and an outfielder. He’s no rookie as a manager —having managed the (his hometown) in 1974. Career moves placed him in the area and Jim managed the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1976 and again in 1978. To round out his experience he returned to Brantford as the owner in 1980. Jim has a hard work policy and direct approach to the game and each player, which has proven to be popular with the fortunate few who will play for the 1990 London Majors. The manager’s baton has been passed into very capable hands.

London Majors Baseball Team c/o Arden Eddie

Dear Arden, On behalf of the Sunshine Foundation of Canada, I want to thank you for your interest in the cause of special children. When you recently approached the Foundation with a fundraising proposal for the coming baseball season, I was very impressed with the idea. The fact that you want to share the idea with the Sunshine Foundation and Swing For Life makes it even more special because both organizations deal with children in need of community-support. The Sunshine Foundation has been in existence since October, 1987 and since that time we have fulfilled the dreams of more than 11 hundred children between three and 19 who are terminally-ill, seriously-ill or severely (physically) disabled. The public has embraced our cause because it feels so good to see these children laugh and enjoy life. With the involvement of members of the community such as you and the mem bers of the London Majors, we will continue to fulfill such dreams for special children for many years to come. We look forward to working in cooperation with volunteers from Swing For Life this summer as we operate the gate at Labatt Park for the Majors’ home games. The two charities will then split the revenue raised at the gate, while the Majors make other arrangements to offset operating expenses.

Thank you very much for this opportunity to work hand-in-hand with your organization.

Sincerely,

Maureen Golovchenko Executive Director

FOUNDATION December 12,1989 London Majors Baseball Team c/o Arden Eddie

Dear Arden, Just a note to express our sincere gratitude to you and the London Majors, for selecting “Swing for Life" as, one of two, charitable causes you wish to support in 1990. It is our understanding that you intend to donate 100% of gate revenues generated over 16 London Major home games to ourselves and the Sun shine Foundation on a 50/50 basis. We also understand our sole obligation to this effort, is to provide staffing of the gates throughout these games. Additionally, the two organizations will jointly administer these funds by way of a controlled joint bank account in the names of “Swing for Life” and The Sunshine Foundation. Since we are a new fundraising group in London, I needn’t tell you how delighted we are that you chose us to represent your objective, along side of the Sunshine Foundation who we continue to hold in the highest regard. It is our extreme pleasure to be associated with a Foundation, who like us, strives to benefit children faced with often tragic circumstances. Hopefully, corporate sponsors will agree, our two groups combined, will direct funds to very worthwhile efforts involving children and that their sup port of the London Major games will result in a number of positive initiati ves on both fronts. As you known Arden, “Swing for Life” primarily supports the paediatric transplant program at University Hospital and the critical care unit at Child ren’s Hospital of Western Ontario. Our first fundraiser in 1989 resulted in $20,000.00 being awarded to these institutions to fund accommodaton needs of transplant patient families and non-medical costs associated with their Anencephalic Donor pogram, (the first of its kind in North America). Hopefully, many young lives will be saved due to their ongoing attempts to break new ground in the paediatric transplant community. It is our sincere hope that you receive positive support from the professional community in London. Your intentions are honourable indeed Arden, and can only result in good things for both charities and our respective causes. If we can be of any assistance in this regard, please do not hesitate to call. On our behalf, please pass on our personal thanks to all who choose to stand behind the Majors, The Sunshine Foundation and “Swing for Life”.

Sincerely,

Gerrit DeWee rd

7 A HISTORY OF THE INTER-COUNTY MAJOR In 1919 the Inter-County launched its inaugural season. The league consisted of four teams, Galt, Guelph, Stratford and Kitchener, the latter operating as a rival for the pro team in the Michigan-. The first season was a rocky one but the league survived. In the early years, the league expanded admitting teams from centres such as London, Brantford, Preston and St. Thomas. By the mid-30’s, the Inter-County had grown into a power to be reckoned with. Stratford's OBA Championship in 1934 was the fifth straight for the Inter-County. During World War II, the league managed to maintain schedules, although curtailed in most cases as many young men joined the armed services. After the war, the Senior Inter-County went professional in everything but name. The league was listed in professional ranks as an outlaw league competing in the money market with minor pro clubs for talent. Operators poured in cash in an effort to build better teams. Players were imported by the dozen from south of the border. Several major leaguers, who were over the hill, came for the quick dollar. During this era, 1946-50, the player calibre had improved to the point where the Senior Inter-County was superior in class of play to that of many minor pro leagues. Games were watched by the largest crowds in league history. Most parks were equipped with floodlights and night baseball helped swell the crowds. So much emphasis had been placed on the senior series that the Inter-County no longer operated one within the association. The senior operators did so as the Inter-County Senior Baseball League, an affiliate of the association. They even went to the extent of having a league Commissioner, John Gillis, a London lawyer and former pitcher with the London Majors. The downhill trend started in the mid-50’s. Dissolution of the Inter-County Senior Baseball League came in 1957 when London and Brantford joined the -Niagara District League. The remainder of the league continued as a senior series under the association. In 1958, London, Brantford and Hamilton rejoined the Senior Inter-County. Oakville Oaks won the pennant in the nine team circuit and then withdrew at the season's end. The downhill trend continued and in 1962, Listowel, Hamilton and St. Thomas dropped out. For the 1962 and 1963 seasons only five teams entered the league each year. That was the lowest ebb of Senior Inter-County. A rebuilding program started in 1964 when Stratford returned for the first time since 1951, while Listowel came back in 1965. The same year, Hamilton Red Wings won the OBA Championship and then entered the Senior Inter-County in 1966. The next few years saw three clubs drop out but two have since re-entered. Brantford folded after the 1967 season only to rejoin in 1971. Galt dropped out after dismal performances in 1971 and 1972. They rejoined in 1975 representing Cambridge, since Galt had been renamed by regional government. Listowel dropped out following the 1969 season due to a lack of local players and Toronto entered a team the same season for the first time ever. St. Thomas returned in 1976 following an absence of 14 years and Waterloo re-entered in 1978 after a 21 year absence. With Waterloo's return in 1978, all eight cities that comprised the Inter-County Senior Baseball League in 1950 were representedin 1978 plus Hamilton and Toronto. For the first time ever, the league was split into two divisions. Until 1978,1950 was the last season that eight clubs were together as heavy financial losses brought on by bidding wars in the 50's bankrupted league. Amidst the changes in the lineup of teams, the League reopened the Commissioner’s position in 1970 with the appointment of Reuben Halpern of Kitchener. He was a former Inter-County Associa tion president in the mid-60’s and still presides as Commissioner today, starting his 16th season. The commissioner’s position had been discontinued with the dissolution of the Inter-County Senior Baseball League in 1957. The League name was changed to Inter-County Major Baseball League in 1974 by Commissioner Halpern. In 1979, Windsor Chiefs entered to bring the League’s membership to 11 teams, the largest ever. It was also the first time that a city west of London joined the l-C circle. The Chiefs brought with them a first-class operation and a ball club with an excellent track record as champions of the Essex Coun ty League for seven of the previous nine years and also as Ontario champions in 1978 and 1979. Guelph took a one-year leave of absence in 1980 due to a shortage of players, marking the first time since 1956 that the city of Guelph was without l-C Major Baseball. The club returned in 1981, bringing the League back to 11 teams, however, Windsor dropped out prior to the 1982 season due to economic reasons on the part of the core teams. Travelling time and expenses took their toll on the trips to Windsor. In 1982, the operators honoured Commissioner Halpern and Secretary Lorne Hamel for their years of service by renaming the East and West Divisions as the Halpern and Hamel Divisions, respec tively. However, with the folding of Cambridge prior to the 1984 season, the League reverted back to a one-division format. The Cambridge folding marked the second time in 25 years that either the pennant winner or playoff champion folded the following season. The first occasion was Oakville Oaks who won the pennant in 1958 and subsequently folded. Cambridge won the championship in 1983 and dropped out for the second time in 11 years having last folded after the 1972 season. Their place will betaken by Niagara Falls Mariners in the 1985 season, bringing the i-C Major League back to 10 teams.
