Distribution of Pilodeudorix camerona

Ssp. camerona (red) – Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Togo, Nigeria, Cameroon, Gabon, Congo, Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of Congo.

Ssp. katanga (green) – Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia.

Distribution: Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Togo, Nigeria, Cameroon, Gabon, Congo, Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia. Recorded, in error, from Niger by Staudinger (1891). Habitat: Woodland and forest margins (Kielland, 1990d). In Tanzania subspecies katanga occurs at altitudes from 900 to 2 000 m (Kielland, 1990d). Habits: A rather scarce species, usually met with in ones or twos, perched on green leaves. Up to a dozen specimens were seen feeding from the flowers of Eupatorium on the edge of forest in Bia National Park, Ghana (Larsen, 2005a). Males select perches low down, from which they defend a territory (Larsen, 2005a). Early stages:

Jackson, 1947: 45 [Malabigambo Forest, Uganda]. “Larva found among ants under bark, looking for a place to pupate. Egg. Unknown. Larva. Onisciform and very broad, with segmental divisions sharply defined, and skin much roughened. Collar rounded and projecting; anal segments flattened, carrying a gland and two minute tubercles. The tubercles are tiny white globular organs, with apparently no terminal infloresence; they are extruded in the presence of ants, either together or separately. Colour of larva dark sepia. Length 15 mm, width 6 mm. Pupa. Brown, much contracted at extremities, otherwise of regular shape without ornamentation.”

Larval food: Pterocarpus santalinoides L.Hér. ex DC. (Fabaceae) [Farquharson, 1921; as Pterocarpus esculenta Schum. & Thonn. on flowers; Nigeria]. Associated ants: Oecophylla species [Farquharson, 1921; Nigeria].
