Washington Natural Heritage Program List of Animal Species with Ranks October 2017 The following list of animals known from Washington is complete for resident and transient vertebrates and several groups of invertebrates, including odonates, branchipods, tiger beetles, butterflies, gastropods, freshwater bivalves and bumble bees. Some species from other groups are included, especially where there are conservation concerns. Among these are the Palouse giant earthworm, a few moths and some of our mayflies and grasshoppers. Currently 857 vertebrate and 1,100 invertebrate taxa are included. Conservation status, in the form of range-wide, national and state ranks are assigned to each taxon. Information on species range and distribution, number of individuals, population trends and threats is collected into a ranking form, analyzed, and used to assign ranks. Ranks are updated periodically, as new information is collected. We welcome new information for any species on our list. While most of the Hesperiidae has not yet been digitally captured a concerted effort was launched across the LepNet participants to see if we could rapidly generate a dataset for Oarisma with the aim of assisting conservation efforts forOarisma poweshiek (Parker, 1870; Fig 1) being led by Dr. Anna Monfils at Central Michigan University. The dataset published herein contains the label data for all specimens residing at the Oregon State Arthropod Collection as of August 2017. -

The classification for Afrotropical butterflies is placed within a worldwide context to subtribal level. Taxa that still require interrogation are highlighted. The Genus Acraea (Lepidoptera : Nymphalidae) - Peter Hendry
The genus Acraea (Lepidoptera : Nymphalidae) - Peter Hendry With the recent migration to Australia of the Tawny Coster (Acraea terpsicore (Linnaeus, 1758)), (see Creature Feature this issue), I thought it might be timely to take a look at the genus worldwide. It must be noted that due to a misidentification A. terpsicore had long been known as A. violae and many references in the literature and on the web refer to it as A. violae. As with much of the Lepidoptera the genus is in a state of flux, and has long been split into the subgenera Acraea (Acraea) and Acraea (Actinote). The genus is placed in the tribe Acraeini and until Harvey (1991) placed it in the subfamily Heliconiinae it was listed in the subfamily Acraeinae. Recent molecular work has made changes and a current listing of the tribe Acraeini, by Niklas Wahlberg, is available at http://www.nymphalidae.net/Classification/Acraeini.htm. It shows members of the old subgenus Acraea (Actinote) being placed in the genus Actinote, and the old subgenus Acraea (Acraea) becoming the genus Acraea with a subgenus Acraea (Bematistes). It also lists several Acraea as unplaced. This may further change as some believe the subgenus Acraea (Bematistes) will move to the genus Bematistes. The genus is primarily Afrotropical with only four species occurring outside this region, these being, Acraea andromacha (Fig. 1) A. meyeri (Fig. 10) A. moluccana and A. terpsicore. A fifth species the Yellow Coster Acraea (Actinote) issoria is now referred to the genus Actinote. Like many of the Nymphalidae the larvae feed on plants which contain cyanogens making the larvae and adults poisonous to predators. -

The Status of Silvery Blue Subspecies (Glaucopsyche Lygdamus Lygdamus and G

CRYAN New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, 1 Hunterspoint Plaza, 47-40 Twenty-first Street, Long Island City, New York 11101 ABSTRACT. Two subspecies of the Silvery Blue (Glaucopsyche lygdamus, Lycaeni dae) are recorded from New York. The nominate subspecies was reported from central New York through 1969, but has not been seen from 1970-1991. Adults flew in May, and larvae fed on native Wood Vetch (Vicia caroliniana, Fabaceae) on steep, naturally unstable, southwest-facing shale banks. Glaucopsyche lygdamus couperi is reported for the first time from northern New York (and Vermont), where its larvae feed on planted or naturalized Tufted Vetch (Vicia cracca), and adults fly in June on weedy road banks. This butterfly is spreading south using vetch-lined highway corridors. The two entities exhibit marked ecological and phenotypic contrasts in New York. Additional key words: Fabaceae, Vicia cracca, Vicia caroliniana, range expansion, rare species. The Silvery Blue, Glaucopsyche Iygdamus (Doubleday) (Lycaeni dae), has been considered rare and local in New York, where the nominate subspecies reaches its northern limit (Klots 1951, Shapiro 1974, Opler & Krizek 1984). Literature references and specimens are scanty, and almost nothing has been published about its natural history in New York. Scudder (1889) said that ssp. Iygdamus was "known from the upper waters of the Susquehanna [River]," but gave no details. -

Temporal variation and phenology of tropical insect communities and the role of environmental factors controlling this variation is poorly understood. A better understanding is needed, for example, to predict the effects of climate change on tropical insect communities and to assess the long- term persistence of tropical communities. We studied seasonal and inter-annual variation in tropical fruit- feeding butterflies by exploiting a unique 137-month abundance time series of .100 species, sampled at 22 locations in the medium altitude montane rain forest of Kibale National Park, western Uganda. Precipitation peaked twice per year, about 20 d after each equinox. Vegetation greenness peaked approximately 33 d later. Species richness and abundance of butterflies peaked about 2 and 3 months, respectively, after the greenness peak. -

TROPICAL LEPIDOPTERA NEWS December 1996 No.4 LEPIDOPTERORUM CATALOGUS (New Series) The new world catalog of Lepidoptera renews the series title The new series (as edited by J. B. Heppner) began already in first begun in 1911. The original catalog series was published by 1989 with publication of the catalog of Noctuidae, by R. Poole. W. Junk Publishers of Berlin, Germany (later The Hague, E. J. Brill Publishers, of Leiden, Netherlands, published this first Netherlands), continuing until 1939 when the incomplete series fascicle in 3 volumes, covering already about a third of all known was deactivated due to World War II. The original series Lepidoptera. Since ATL took over the series, several families completed a large number of families between 1911 and 1939, have been readied for publication.
